About a month ago, I was at a project meeting and pizza was ordered in. In addition to the usual complement of cheese and sausage, and just plain cheese, a soy cheese veggie pizza was present. I instantly thought it would be awful, but didn't even try it. So last night while grocery shopping, something urged me to at least try soy milk. Maybe it was the fact that my boss is a vegetarian, maybe it's because Ryan bribed me, who knows. I figured I'd go with chocolate milk, since it's one of my favorite beverages. You know what? It's pretty good. In fact, it's very good... I had an actual taste for the stuff a few times during the workday yesterday. While I'm not about to go veg (chicken is far too tough for me to give up), I wouldn't mind trying soy milk as a substitute for cow's milk. The downside is the price: a quart of the stuff cost me $1.99, and it's $2.09 through Webvan. Compare that to a gallon of milk at the (high) price of $3.29. Maybe that money goes towards the website, I dunno. In any event, I encourage you to at least give it a try. It's really not that bad. -pm Comments

DATE: Friday December 8, 2000 -- 8:30:04AM I, too, know the pull of chicken, Paul. She is a harsh mistress. FROM: Ryan DATE: Friday December 8, 2000 -- 9:10:25AM Since becoming vegetarian, my intake of soy has naturally increased. Seriously -- it's quite amazing what they can do with soy-based products... the sausage links and breakfast patties are unreal -- they taste so good. The downside of the meat-substitute products like that is that they're high in sodium (though a few recent large studies have concluded that sodium is not really connected to heart disease and high blood pressure except in people that are "sodium sensitive" -- about 20% of the population). FROM: Robert DATE: Friday December 8, 2000 -- 9:14:16AM Morning Star's veggie dogs and veggie corndogs are also pretty good. I lived on them last year at school. The best thing about them, however, is the abscense of that icky real hot dog aftertaste. FROM: Chris DATE: Friday December 8, 2000 -- 11:45:38AM huh huh funny I'd probably say more but I'm trying to get in the christmas mood, but i'm not FROM: Robert DATE: Friday December 8, 2000 -- 11:47:46AM C'mon, Chris, smut is always in season. So give it to me! That's right, I want you to GIVE IT TO ME!!! FROM: Barbara DATE: Friday December 8, 2000 -- 2:19:23PM The imagine foods' Rice Dream or Soy Dream are also good non-dairy beverages (I like the vanilla). Unfortuately Webvan doesn't carry that brand, but Whole Foods does and I'm seeing more and more at "regular" grocery stores. FROM: Ryan DATE: Friday December 8, 2000 -- 2:34:56PM Oddly, Barbara, Giant (a major chain in the VA/MD area) carries two or three different brands of soy milk. That works out well, especially since the closes Whole Foods/Fresh Fields is 30 minutes away. FROM: Robert DATE: Friday December 8, 2000 -- 3:40:02PM Rice Dream "ice cream" sandwiches are good. So are Tofutti's. FROM: zac DATE: Friday December 8, 2000 -- 7:44:09PM forget the soy, I enjoy chocolat, drugs, booze more drugs and a good chinese. FROM: Matt DATE: Sunday December 10, 2000 -- 2:11:37PM Balance is the way to a healthy diet. I may get a minor cold every 2-3 years. I attribute that to healthy living and spiritual cleanliness FROM: Robert DATE: Sunday December 10, 2000 -- 3:59:11PM Matt--Don't discount your monthly colonic! FROM: DATE: Thursday April 24, 2003 -- 1:28:18 pm FROM: Alex DATE: Thursday April 24, 2003 -- 1:29:47 pm I just had Morning Star's "Chik patties" which would replace the "real" chicken patties...they're DELICIOUS!!...They have the same great taste and they're good for you!!...I think everyone should try eating soy, at least once!!...It's worth it!! FROM: Ryan DATE: Thursday April 24, 2003 -- 3:39:36 pm I wouldn't necessarily say they're "good" for you -- they're still highly processed and as with many frozen foods (Morningstar especially), they're high in sodium. But they do have several other obvious benefits (no animal flesh, lower in sat fat, etc.) that make them worth choosing over the real thing. FROM: jk DATE: Thursday April 24, 2003 -- 3:43:56 pm Please don't eat them, but do try soy candles. They are nearly soot-free and better for people with allergies. FROM: Sarah DATE: Monday June 30, 2003 -- 8:04:38 am I'm hooked on soy milk...it really makes you feel like you've nourished your body. FROM: Dave Walls [E-Mail] DATE: Monday June 30, 2003 -- 9:14:56 am I had a craving a few weeks back for chocolate ice cream, so I went to the supermarket, but found that the market had a problem with the Ice Cream coolers, and most of the ice cream was mushy. FROM: Bill DATE: Monday June 30, 2003 -- 5:10:40 pm I've heard from reliable sources that Soy Milk is detrimental to the male prostate. I used to drink Soy Milk, but have change to Rice Milk from my concern about postate cancer. Rice Milk is also lactate and gluten free. I make my own Rice Milk thereby reducing the cost considerably, it costs me about 30 cents a quart. As far as I know, Soy has no ill effect to a female. FROM: Ryan DATE: Monday June 30, 2003 -- 9:19:20 pm Bill -- From what I've seen, there's a lot more evidence that soy is benficial in the fight against prostate (and other) cancers. Here's one example of a Loma-Linda study. FROM: Bill DATE: Tuesday July 1, 2003 -- 12:27:36 am I appreciate your input Ryan. The information I received was just this year (2003) from a Chiropractic College graduate who was required to take several personal health classes. It was from these classes that he was informed of the prostate cancer danger. There was no warning against any other kind of cancer, just to the prostate. This comes from information being taught of recent. The Loma Linda study was done in the year 2000. I'm inclined to think that maybe further studies have been done since the Loma Linda study and the latest findings warn against the consumption of Soy Milk by a male individual. FROM: Ryan DATE: Tuesday July 1, 2003 -- 12:52:33 am If you can get a citation for that study (so that I can take a look at the scope of the study, the funding source, etc.), I'd be interesting in seeing it... thanks!
