My wife was posting to some board yesterday and turned to ask me if there is a word that means "someone who is typically happy and care-free".

Our two-year-old daughter was standing beside her and responded, firmly and authoritatively, "HERNIQUAT".

My wife and I kind of stared at each other for a moment, and she decided to use it in the post, anyway, and explain its origin. (What the heck, I couldn't think of a word, so...!)

That, of course, would be the noun form of the word. HERNIQUATIOUS would be the adjective form.

Not that I use it in everyday texts, but aphasia has always had a fond place for rolling off the tongue nicely and being sort of bittersweet, in the awe to the point of revolt.

As far as defenestration; I'm not sure if it's just out, as in one case I can think of in particular it could also mean "through". A mutual friend of mine in H.S. (same one Paul of pinger fame attended, although a few years his Sr.) was actually defenestrated when he put his arm out to stop one of those glass & metal doors in downstairs A-hall (yes, complete with crossed/wire windows) and believe it or not, his arm went through the glass. Yes... stitches necessary. Totally freakish thing, wasn't a case of hurling himself through it either. Many of the definitions for this word seem to use vague references (both awesome words) and ambiguity (another very cool word) to parallel (niiiice) the idea of committing defenestration in other fashions. If you look down the page on dictionary.com you'll see what I mean with regards to dragging one "window" off-screen on a computer also being characterized (cool) as defenestration, as well as formatting a hard disk (odd...).

Okay, a little knowledge and . . . you know the rest. Just be careful that you know how to use these sharp objects. Don't go running with the scissors, so to speak, because you're liable to poke your eye out.

For instance, plethora is a nice word. It means superabundance, which is also a nice word. But so many people pronounce plethora incorrectly that it instantly audibly deflates the user's purpose.

Mispronouncers predictably accent plethora's second syllable, when to be correct, one must place the accent invariably on the first. Check your dictionaries, here. There is no accepted alternate pronunciation.

Rather than impress with one's voluminous vocabulary, one who mispronounces a ten-dollar word, such as plethora, instantly reveals one's own ineptitude. Worse, deservedly or not, mispronunciation of a ten-dollar word exposes the enunciator to derision because he or she always risks that at the moment the listener becomes aware of the verbal mishap, the listener may assume that the speaker meant to elevate him- or herself at the listener's expense; a most opprobrious motive indeed, particularly in social settings. If you get away with a little embarassment, consider yourself lucky. Most won't tell you anyway. Be on the lookout for narrowed eyes or you will stumble to the next social engagement having acquired a pleTHORa of detractors along the way.

Even in cases where the circumstances clearly reveal indubitably that the speaker's intentions were above reproach, the speaker's credibility ineluctably suffers.

I tend to avoid using plethora, correctly enunciated or otherwise, because it is the placard of the verbal charlatan. I don't know why this is. I think it's the first ten-dollar word that people become aware of-- somewhere in high school. It falls easily into the glove, like a pop fly, and then gets put on display with great fanfare. It does its job so well at impressing the plebeians that it is the only arrow found in many quivers.

For those who are interested in doing damage with an expansive vocabulary, the goal here is volubility, not bombast. As discussed above, most of the damage done can be to yourself.

One chooses a multisyllabic jewel carefully for its unsurpassed clarity. Such a word, masterfully employed, makes any other word at once articulably inappropriate. The goal is to educate, to elucidate, and when possible, to enlighten. The means is not only using those big words, but using them well.

I just read the list through again, because I love it, and I realized that I misspelled embarrassed. Oops. All apologies. Good thing you can't hear a misspelling.

I also wanted to register an excited approval of "herniquat." "One who is happy and carefree." I believe I shall adopt it immediately and begin a solid attempt at spreading that one about. If it makes entry into the OED, the Daily Ping will reach near immortality in herniquat's etymology.

I can't think of a word that is synonymous. Usually you use an adjective or an adjectival phrase like "lover-of-life," or "shining disposition" or "happy and carefree." Synomymous words to the adjectival form are lightsome or even halcyon (but the latter doesn't really apply to a human)--I also can't say that either is usual. When was the last time I described someone as lightsome? Hmmmmm. NEVER.

Halcyon? I've seen that in poems--not really sure how to pronounce it, don't care to look up the key--will never use.

In the late '70s thalidomide was prescribed to pregnant women. Many of their kids were born without limbs.

Word formation is a topic that ought to be taught as part of a grammatical subject in grammar school. The grammatical course would require one, to pass the course, to create one's own private language space, with such syntax and spelling rules, for instance, as one might think would actually work.

Defining a common world language is just an extension of such a project.

The syllabus for such a course would include writings by Poe (The Gold Bug) and Tolkien (the many languages ventured there) -- but would generally exclude puerile conceptions of language, as represented by the magical "language" in Rowleys' Potter series. (Potter-world magic language is "Ridikulous" and so on.)

Shouldn't Klingon also be incorporated into such a syllabus?

I'm only Trekkie enough to know that the stooge in the red shirt will be vaporized instead of the lead characters, but I've heard that Klingon is actually a suprisingly complete and useable synthetic language.

I've also heard that some super Trekkies have taken the basic elements set forth in the Star Trek series and have developed the language enough to produce readable novels.

I don't really know, though--just something I've heard, but from reliable sources. I believe Klingon was mentioned in a History of the English Language course I took as an undergrad because it took sensible elements from a number of languages and rearranged them into a rather successful amalgamation. IIRC, the instructor's son was a super geek Trekkie who was then a freshman at MIT. Being a sucker for anything linguistic, the intructor actually studied Klingon with her son for fun. I, personally was amazed with the story, though not enough to actually watch an episode of Star Trek, new or old.

Ubiquitous is my all time favourite. It begins and ends with round sounds and in the middle it is tight and strangled. "Seemingly present everywhere simultanously". Like air or God or even bacteria.

I prefer the sounds of words to their meanings. I like the way they feel in your mouth when you speak them. "Squirrel" and "Albuquerque" with an American accent are fun to say. Saying "Tractor" with a South West English accent is hysterical but then again, saying anything in a South West English accent is lots of fun.

But as a true blue Aussie, my favourite saying would have to be "Get up!" - presumably to my red cattle dog while she's rounding up the sheep. Pronounced "Gi'dahp" and we use it for lots of things like to your mum when she's taking too long to get ready! Or when someone says something that you disagree firmly with. "Get up!" But if you use it, make sure you have a real growl and an urgency in your voice and a really broad country Australian accent. Even you kids in the U.S.!
