OK, there are less than 75 shark attacks each year worldwide. And this year, there we are significantly behind last year's pace. So why is the media beating this issue to death? For cripes sakes, do we really need an ABC News story on how to avoid a shark attack?
Yes, it's tragic that people (kids, in particular) have been attacked, and in some cases, killed, but my God, the media frenzy makes it sound like everyone on the beach is in grave danger. Let's chill out with the sensational reporting and get back to some real news. Like Jon Benet and O.J.. -ram Comments

DATE: Wednesday September 5, 2001 -- 1:31:55AM The only report the media needs to focus on is answering the question: How do they cram all that graham? FROM: Terry M. DATE: Wednesday September 5, 2001 -- 3:13:43AM Since the Ping is part of the media, then technically we are contributing to the problem. :-) FROM: Rob DATE: Wednesday September 5, 2001 -- 9:10:15AM Maybe they ran out of stuff to say about Chandra Levy, so they needed a new story they could talk about over and over and over again. FROM: Paul DATE: Wednesday September 5, 2001 -- 9:55:56AM I think sharks need to be a part of the new version of Card Sharks, instead. FROM: Robert DATE: Wednesday September 5, 2001 -- 11:09:45AM I thought Jaws taught America a lesson. Obviously not! FROM: brant DATE: Wednesday September 5, 2001 -- 12:15:12PM face it, we are on the food chain though have greatly distorted it over the years. if you are prepared to eat an animal than you should likewise be prepared to be eaten by it. its natures way of saying, fuck you. FROM: Robert DATE: Wednesday September 5, 2001 -- 12:48:49PM Brant--For once I think you're saying something that makes sense. However, I don't think many people are eating shark. But if a chicken wants to throw down, he's earned a fight from me. FROM: MollyCule DATE: Wednesday September 5, 2001 -- 4:40:08PM brant, i also think you have a point, if a somewhat distorted one. The main meat sources of Americans are chicken and other poultry, cows and related livestock, and fish of various kinds, but I doubt if there have been any fatal trout/snapper/orange roughy/clam attacks. The only animal I can think of that Americans would eat that could eat them back is alligator, and that's not very widely eaten. At least, outside of Louisiana. So, I agree with you, but in a much more limited spectrum. Unless the shark are avenging all of their tasty chicken friends who have been mercilessly chowed down for years. FROM: Rob DATE: Wednesday September 5, 2001 -- 5:12:17PM Shark is tasty. Yummmmm... FROM: Chris DATE: Friday September 7, 2001 -- 11:58:36AM Really Ryan, If it weren't for ABC would you have known to not "swim with sharks"? I am not sure that I would have thought of that. Of course I just read that the Florida legislature voted to ban shark feeding expeditions which have apparently become tourist destinations, so maybe that's not quite as common sense as I would have thought. FROM: Ryan DATE: Friday September 7, 2001 -- 12:31:00PM Chris -- I live by whatever Sam Donaldson tells me. FROM: brant DATE: Friday September 7, 2001 -- 2:31:37PM sharks are considered a delicacy (sp) all over the world and especially in asian countires where shark fin soup and similar fare is enjoyed greatly. FROM: Matt DATE: Saturday September 8, 2001 -- 1:05:05AM I highly doubt people would go vegan due to shark attacks. I think people would wipe out all the sharks first. That seems to be a much more viable option. FROM: Scott DATE: Saturday September 8, 2001 -- 8:53:39AM Brant, As a vegan myself, I think stuff like that all the time. My great hope was that Mad Cow Disease would wake some folks up, needless to say I was wrong. I think that Matt is correct in that people would wipe out the entire species if it meant that they would be be able to vacation at the Outer Banks of N.C. and Florida without the threat of a natural predator. Unfortunately as humans are the most "highly developed" species on the planet, we have invented the most forms of destruction (Is this evolution/development?) Instead of learning to live in harmony with natural predators we systematically destroy them. I must admit I am acared as to what is going to start happening to the sharks. In line with your thinking, I wish that animal attacks would change people's outlooks and dietary habits, however I fear that attacks would only result in the extermination of the "responsible" species. In addition I really do not want to see people hurt (through animal attacks or otherwise), and hope that people continue to become vegan out of love and respect for animals not out of fear of them. People being attacked does not make someone respect the animal, it makes them think of the animal as "aggressive" or "rabid" and in turn think of destruction not compassion. As the days go by more people turn to veganism out of respect for the environment, themselves, and animals. Time and eduction is the only thing that will bring more people towards a vegan lifestyle. ----Scott FROM: Ryan DATE: Saturday September 8, 2001 -- 1:06:59PM Eloquently put, Scott. FROM: Jim DATE: Sunday September 9, 2001 -- 12:38:37AM There's more to worry about than just sharks and alligators. FROM: cameo dutton DATE: Wednesday January 29, 2003 -- 11:00:51 am how many sharks atacks are there each year? FROM: Ryan DATE: Wednesday January 29, 2003 -- 2:14:26 pm 873,509. FROM: clint DATE: Tuesday July 29, 2003 -- 7:13:11 pm i was bitten just last friday by an 8 foot gray reef off the coast of powell cay in the bahamas. so i feel that i have an inside view of this topic. the fact is that most shark atacks are brought on by the person. people need to be aware of this. I know thatif i had not been holding a bloody fish i would not have been bitten. FROM: Ryan DATE: Tuesday July 29, 2003 -- 11:10:32 pm if i had not been holding a bloody fish i would not have been bitten. FROM: Jonathan DATE: Wednesday March 3, 2004 -- 8:02:38 am well I would say that the reason for all the recent shark attacks is because of all the bloody cage dives. this agrovates sharks and makes them hate us therefore more attacks!!! FROM: JACK DATE: Thursday July 29, 2004 -- 12:52:37 am FOR YOU JONATHAN FROM: Ryan [E-Mail] DATE: Thursday July 29, 2004 -- 9:47:47 am MAYBE U SHULD TRY TO FND THE RST OF THE KEYS ON YOUR KYBORD. FROM: Paul DATE: Wednesday April 19, 2006 -- 6:24:13 am You see guys, sharks have a constant chip on their shoulders, like the man in the commerical for Duracell, when he says, "I dare you to knock it off"!! Sharks feel the same way. They constantly have to prove that they are the ones with the balls!! This is why sharks are always taking a bite out of someone's ass and sometimes, like a pit bull, they don't want to let go. Sharks do this to show "us" that "they" are the kings of the sea, not us!!
