As a kid, my mom wouldn't let us have any cereal with preservatives, so we were limited to Cheerios (and Honey Nut Cheerios for those special occasions). Naturally, when I was awarded the freedoms of college life, I rebelled and packed so many preservatives in my body that when I die, my body will look the same for four decades. During this time, I determined that my favorite cereals were Lucky Charms and Frosted Mini-Wheats.
Nowadays, I avoid the "junk cereals" in all but rare circumstances. I generally eat the oh-so-exciting Healthy Valley Organic Golden Flax Seed Cereal, usually plain but sometimes with blueberries. But every so often I'll revert and have a bowl of preserved, sugary goodness. Now it's your turn to share your favorite cereals, and see how they do over at the Empty Bowl cereal review site. -ram Comments

DATE: Friday September 7, 2001 -- 9:05:03AM I am shocked Matt has had nothing to say yet. FROM: Rob DATE: Friday September 7, 2001 -- 9:09:42AM My mom would let us have just about any cereal we wanted. Except for anything with chocolate in it. That was the one exception. So no Cookie Crisp for us. I love Frosted Mini-Wheats. Also Corn Chex. Several different raisin brans. Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Golden Grahams. Fruity Pebbles. Crunch Berries. I was never a really big fan of Fruit Loops. I don't eat breakfast too often these days, though. FROM: Scott DATE: Friday September 7, 2001 -- 9:17:54AM I also generally steer clear of most of the preservative filled crap that one finds in the cereal FROM: Scott DATE: Friday September 7, 2001 -- 9:27:32AM Please forgive my typos. I meant: FROM: Vinny DATE: Friday September 7, 2001 -- 9:48:33AM My parents were the same way. It was shredded wheat (ain't no sugar on that) or Cheerios. But, after 18 years of that, I never had the urge to eat sugary cereals. On occasion I'll eat Peanut Butter Crunch or Frosted Mini-Wheats. Or, there's a really good cereal I get at Trader Joe's here in San Francisco that is a mix of granola and hemp seeds. It makes me feel gooooood... FROM: Ryan DATE: Friday September 7, 2001 -- 10:53:25AM Scott -- Good job. I would have had to report you to the vegan authorities otherwise. :) FROM: Robert DATE: Friday September 7, 2001 -- 12:27:32PM I think Matt is planning on retiring to the Cereal Isle. FROM: Greg DATE: Friday September 7, 2001 -- 12:34:54PM Does anyone remember Waffle-o's? FROM: Robert DATE: Friday September 7, 2001 -- 12:42:16PM Greg--Yup, and they sucked. Syrup flavor and milk don't mix well, except in my tummy. FROM: Scott DATE: Friday September 7, 2001 -- 1:11:33PM Ryan, I am glad that you did not have to report me. I think the Vegan Police have been watching me anyway--along with the Richmond Police, the C.I.A., the F.B.I., and the U.N. They are all OUT TO GET ME! FROM: Paul DATE: Friday September 7, 2001 -- 1:16:47PM My long-standing favorite has been Reese's Puffs - now THAT'S a cereal. FROM: brant DATE: Friday September 7, 2001 -- 2:24:30PM scott, i also being a vegan, know the perils o wanting a marshmallow cereal. FROM: Rob M. DATE: Friday September 7, 2001 -- 3:06:22PM My cereal staples are Meusli, Grape Nuts, and Giant brand granola. If I'm feeling naughty, I'll eat Life. Mmmmm...I love the taste of soymilk steeped with the taste of Life cereal. FROM: Scott DATE: Friday September 7, 2001 -- 3:43:09PM Brant, I have heard about Vegan Marshmallows but have never tried to locate them. I trust soy as a substitute for many things but I am not sure that "marshmallows" are possible without animal products. I could be wrong of course. Maybe Rob M. knows something on the subjest as I know he is vegan as well. Rob M. probably does not realize that we know one another. Rob, here's a hint as to my identity-- you know me by a different name, an unfortunate nick-name I acquired early in my college career, and we went to college together. Oh and by the way, I thought you looked good sweating like a pig in the pictures on Corey's blog. FROM: Rob DATE: Friday September 7, 2001 -- 4:08:46PM Mmmmm... totally forgot about Grape Nuts. Those things are amazing. I love the way they suck up milk and still taste yummilicious. FROM: Ryan DATE: Friday September 7, 2001 -- 4:33:10PM Wow -- this topic brought the vegans out of the woodwork. FROM: Scott DATE: Friday September 7, 2001 -- 4:44:04PM Ryan, Thanks for the recipe. I will give it a try. Perhaps they can be dried and added to cereal for some Pseudo-Frankenberry goodness. At least the recipe doesn't involve tofu. Some vegan recipes are scary i.e. tofu jerky. FROM: John DATE: Friday September 7, 2001 -- 10:13:25PM Frosted Flakes have been a favorite since I was a kid, but Fruit Loops were the choice for the 12 bowl challenge. FROM: Matt DATE: Saturday September 8, 2001 -- 1:01:46AM Sorry about my absence today from this ping, this is my forte since I am know as a Cereal Historian. FROM: Eric DATE: Tuesday December 11, 2001 -- 11:52:50PM What's scarey about tofu jerky? The things one can make from soybeans are amazing. Ford made many of the parts for his cars with soy. FROM: Ryan DATE: Wednesday December 12, 2001 -- 1:18:34AM Eric -- Did he really? Wow... cars with phytoestrogens. Cool! FROM: Elizabeth DATE: Wednesday December 12, 2001 -- 2:11:51PM I'm pretty sure that Reese's Puffs are vegan, if you can believe that. If you shop at a larger health food store (Whole Foods, Wild Oats, Trader Joes) you can often find vaguely healthy yet still delicious cereals, such as Peanut Butter Bumpers, which sustained me on a car ride from Minnesota to Colorado last spring. FROM: CC DATE: Tuesday March 19, 2002 -- 1:45:07 pm I have once tried a snack with frosted mini wheat (or shredded wheat) with chocolate filling and frosting on top...i have tried in vain in many years to find that receipe....can anyone help me here? thanks. FROM: Mike B. DATE: Thursday July 4, 2002 -- 11:57:45 am When I was a kid I made my mother buy Lucky Charms and pick out the marshmallows. I would only eat the marshmallows--not the cereal. A whole box was good for about three small bowls. FROM: Marques Browne DATE: Sunday July 28, 2002 -- 5:36:51 pm Thank You! I have been wondering if anyone remembered that cereal(Waffle-O's)...I was a Blueberry fan. I just saw the name of the cowboy...Waffle-O-Bill. FROM: Anti-Scott DATE: Sunday December 8, 2002 -- 2:22:00 pm Scott...you homosexual. FROM: Andy DATE: Wednesday January 15, 2003 -- 10:08:08 pm Ok just for you.. Having been born and raised in Cereal City USA aka Battle Creek here are a few tips. FROM: Cynthia DATE: Thursday January 16, 2003 -- 9:46:50 pm My fav. is LIFE. But I do like those chocolate krispies. Frosted cheereos is very good too. I like that without the milk. FROM: Kim DATE: Sunday March 16, 2003 -- 2:10:00 pm Oh's are the best! Do they still make them? Because I've been having a huge craving and I want some now! FROM: Dave Walls DATE: Tuesday March 25, 2003 -- 6:11:54 pm Junky cereal doesnt get any better than Golden Grahams. FROM: Dave Walls DATE: Tuesday March 25, 2003 -- 6:12:52 pm BTW Kim, they do make Oh's. I same them today at the supermarket..still as yummy as ever. FROM: Seto DATE: Thursday June 5, 2003 -- 3:25:32 pm Reese Puffs are very nice. I also love Golden Grahams and Frosted Flakes. Vector has also been part of my diet. FROM: DATE: Thursday June 12, 2003 -- 2:56:39 am FROM: Lea DATE: Thursday June 12, 2003 -- 10:18:46 am I loved blueberry waffle o's. It seems like they quit making everything I get hooked on. FROM: To Hell With Anti-Scott DATE: Thursday June 26, 2003 -- 11:20:05 am You judgemental piece of shit. Go kill yourself. FROM: allison DATE: Saturday October 25, 2003 -- 11:29:12 am I LOVE ALL CEREAL. Silly corn and marshmallow mateys are current favorites. As is Hunny B's with rice krispies. Team Cheerios, cookie crisp, trix, froot loops, honey comb, crispix, wheaties, cornflakes. Too many favorites. I also love cinnamon toast crunch but I don't eat it because it is too fattening. FROM: TIFFANY DATE: Wednesday January 28, 2004 -- 11:40:39 pm Hey, this site has sent me wandering down memory lane. Does anyone remeber such classics as circus fun, dunkin donuts or that "ice cream" cereal. Those were some of my favz. Now I am mainly a cheerios girl (minus the milk- I do not care for it). I would also like to address something, I thought this was a cereal site, not a rude name calling site. If you are reading ANTISCOTT if you have nothing to say about cereal move on. FROM: Lori DATE: Sunday February 22, 2004 -- 10:59:46 am Does anyone remember a cereal called Krispy Kritters? It was supposed to be "indubitably delicious" and we thought it was awful. I always like Fruity Pebbles and Super Golden Crisp. FROM: Jason Baron DATE: Monday January 10, 2005 -- 3:40:02 am Greg, don't listen to Robert! Waffle-o's were tasty. I was sorry when they stopped making them. I recall Waffle-o's had a cartoon cowboy guy on it, and the box was made to look like an old west town that could be cut into a toy. FROM: amber DATE: Thursday January 27, 2005 -- 7:00:31 pm I used to LOVE waffle-o's! My husband still doesn't believe that they ever existed, so I've been trying to find pictures or evidence of any kind to prove to him that I'm not making it up. Thank you!!! FROM: jk DATE: Thursday January 27, 2005 -- 10:48:23 pm Wow, I am always a bit taken back when I see things that happened just prior to 9/11. FROM: Sydney Schwartz DATE: Tuesday July 5, 2005 -- 2:26:08 pm Hi, FROM: Joseph DATE: Tuesday July 5, 2005 -- 3:58:08 pm My favorite is Golden Grahams with chocolate milk a la Dave Walls, (Wednesday March 30, 2005 -- 8:46:27 pm) and I haven't even tried it yet. It just sounds so good. I just have to remember to get two extra things next time I go grocery shopping. FROM: snaily DATE: Thursday July 7, 2005 -- 1:55:50 pm I'm not a big breakfast eater, and thank god for that. my mom wont let me have any cereal with sugar and preservatives in it. always those bland cheerios. but i secretly tasted frosted flakes on our family vacation and became addicted. i usually end up sneaking some into the cart at publix... yummy FROM: lisa crockett DATE: Saturday December 3, 2005 -- 12:09:08 am I sell BooBerry, Frankenberry and count chocula.. From: John
Blueberry Waffle O's were the greatest cereal EVER!! I mis them Ohhh so much!! I also miss Yummy Mummy/Fruit Brute, that was a very good member of the monster cereal group. Cookie Crisp used to be good.. they changed it somehow.. it doesnt taste the same. Fruity Pebbles is always reliable & i would have to say it is my fav, ever since they took my Waffle O's from me...... (sigh)
