First of all, for someone who is from Philadelphia, but just moved back, I just saw this Kerri Lee woman for the first time the other day, and oh yes, she is my morning inspiration. ;-)

On the actual topic of the Ping, I can really go to bed whenever. Starting out as a club DJ when I was 16, it meant a lot of nights up, and a lot of sleeping through the day. Moving into radio, the first gig was an overnight job, doing the 11p-7a shift.
Needless to say, that can throw sleep patterns off a little bit. By now, though, with a normal workday, I'm in bed by 2a, and up at 9, to be at work at 11, work till 8, repeat.

As a kid, it was 9p bedtime, no later, except New Years eve. Go figure how I ended up like this. ;-)

About Sara Underwood:

The funniest on-air slip of the tongue blooper I have ever seen on TV news.

She was doing a story a couple of years ago about the Boston Duck Tours moving their dock from one site to another for some reason, I think related to the never-ending Big Dig project. These tourist boats are that amphibious type that look like a trolley and can go from the street into the water. Anyway, she was going to adlib the comment "I'm going to miss the sight of all those boats hanging out at the pier", which apparently is near the WBZ studios, but what she actually said was "I'm going to miss the sight of all those butts hanging out at the pier."

She caught herself right away and said something like "It's been a long week" to her co-anchor, Ted Wayman I think, who kept his cool and a straight face and said something vacuous and noncommital like "indeed."

She kept her composure very well considering the gaffe, which should have wound up on a blooper reel. I could easily see one or the other of them bursting into laughter, but it didn't happen. No scarlet blush that I could see, though one would have been expected and forgivable.

Speaking of bursting into laughter, there is a story I found on the net quite by accident once that Heather Unruh at WCVB lost her bid to become channel 5's prime time anchor with a very ill-timed fit of uncontrollable laughter during a very serious or tragic story. Apparently she was being groomed for the spot, but wound up at 5 AM instead. Liz Brunner eventually got it. Liz is a former Miss America contestant, I hear.

Thank God Jodi Applegate is going or already gone. She fancies herself a damn comedienne instead of an anchor, and she is terrible at both, just unbearably bad. She had an exclusive sit-down interview with then-Governor Jane (Not Too) Swift during which Applegate talked about their weight and smacked herself on her cheeks and called herself "chipmunk cheeks." That was just hideous to behold.

Applegate has failed everywhere she has gone with dreadful ratings: at Later Today or Weekend Today, or whatever it was. Canceled. At Fox 25 at 4:30 PM (canceled), then at 5:00 PM, then the early morning show. She's the epitome of "news lite"; every time I saw her, which was as seldom as possible, she seemed poised to make some little crack about a news story to lighten the mood. She was just incomprehensibly bad as an anchor for a real news show, as opposed to the ET/Access Hollywood types. Goodbye and good riddance. New York can have her.

Second worst female Boston anchor has to be Caterina Bandini. She redefines clueless for anchors, and seems stiff and wooden. How Channel 7 pulls in ratings with her and that flamer Randy Price is beyond me. It's too fast-paced and superficial. I can't belleve they panicked and extended Price's contract after HArvey Leonard jumped ship. Price was dumped by WBZ as a reporter for his DUI problems before WHDH picked him up. Supposedly he's sober; straight he ain't.

My own favorite is Liz Brunner, who is still attractive and slender, but starting to show her age, and is poised and confident. She has a little too much of that beauty pageant frozen smile about her, but it's a poor lot for anchors in Boston. Who else is there?

Lisa Hughes? A mental lightweight. Karen Marinella? Bland, and who watches 56 anyway? Maria Stephanos? No and no on two counts - blue collar type, and a very poor dresser, particularly for a primetime anchor. She just lacks class all around. I would expect her any day to adlib a four-letter word, or snack her co-anchor across the face with her copy for something. She just comes across as rough around the edges. Natalie Jacobsen? Over the hill and Booooring! Totally lacking in animation. Kim Carigan is good; channel 7 should never have let her go. Bianca de la Garza, married to David Wade, is the hottest anchor in Boston, but surprisingly fashion challenged in that she wears some weird inappropriate outfits from time to time, and is another poised but mental lightweight model type. I could see her going places, like to the networks. Great chicks at Fox25, even with Kerri-Lee Halkett gone to Philly. Worst chicks on WCVB; apparently their target audience is senior citizens from the Chet and Nat days.

Her name appears on several lists on wanderlist.com, some of them of interest to male news junkies. Fans can cast votes for her there. Use the internal search feature to find the lists, but be aware that the search does not accommodate misspellings like Google. If you misspell, or the list item is misspelled, you won't find the item.

For Boston news junkies, there is a somewhat out of date poll of favorite local female news personalities at bostonlinks.bravepages.com that includes all the local stations including NECN. The voting is nonscientific and surprising, especially the votes for the lovely Andrea Stassou, who shot from the 5 AM early news at channel 7 to anchor at ABC's World News Now with a former Boston co-anchor David Wade, who was at WCVB. Andrea is a bit of a lookalike for the gorgeous Liz Cho; I wonder if that was a factor.

It's astonishing how many prominent news people have come out of that overnight format in recent years. Aaron Brown and Thalia Assuras were a team for a while. Mika Brzenski (however it's spelled). Liz Cho. Sharyl Attkisson. Anderson Cooper. Lisa McRee. Steve Osunsami. Susan McGinnis, a hottie. Quite a few others; I see them regularly as reporters on the network prime time news and say, oh yeah, he/she used to be on WNN or Up to the Minute. Apparently it's a good path for promotion at the networks these days. Lots of air time and a chance to show your talents.

Reading these comments I must say hmmmmm seems like Dale/Andreas are friends of Maria? I was searching what nationality De La Garza may be, due to the interesting name. Then I noticed these comments, one calling Maria S. "too blue-collar....classless...polyester suits....another blog said low-class face/voice and streaked hair...etc...etc..." How cruel! Isn't her husband is very successful and very wealthy?? The Golden Couple ( family )as they all say. :) Also...Ch. 7 Phil Lipof is very handsome and is married to Juli Auclair who is very articulate and professional. Yes Dale! Rivera is fabulous! I emailed her ..told her she should replace Caterina B...she wrote back...soooo friendly. Does anyone know who is replacing Bandini yet? On a 'higher' level, lol, I was disappointed that Meredith Viera got Katie's spot!!! She is too old looking..Ann Curry or Natalie Morales were robbed. Campbell Brown is disappointed, u can tell she expected the position !

What about Chikage Windler? She used to be the hottest weather babe around! I would have put her up against anyone else in the country if there were a "Ms. Meterologist Pageant.". She used to wear these tight shirts and had naturally long, silky brown hair.

Then she decided to wear tight-but-not-as-tight-as-possible sweaters, cut her hair to old-woman length and add some red and almost white hilights to her not-so-attractive 'do.

She used to be a babe...now she looks like an ass.

All of the women mentioned are absolutely beautiful. I am still a die-hard Fox25 fan due to Maria. Dale's original comments were right on the mark (about Maria). The other babes on rival new networks really don't measure up to the cougars on Fox25. Even the women on the morning newscast have been catching my eye (Anquinnete Jamison, Cindy Fitzgibbon). Caterina Bandini will be sorely missed but I can't wait to see more of Frances Riviera. Now...back to Maria: This woman truly gets better with age! Any fans of Maria should know that Aug 15th is her "name day" (it's a Greek thing). Wish her a happy one!

Andreas ? Was Francis Rivera chosen as the anchor? Chicage Windler has the 50-housewife look and could not be more irritating but she's classy. Maria (on Fox news) is about (mid?) 40 s , and Bianca is what 20-something ? Both do a good job imo. You know who has a beautiful face? Natalie Morales ! But back to ch. 7 now who will win the anchor spot-Christa or Francis?
