I am a Dr Pepper devotee. Dr Pepper is the best... er... Pepperlike drink of its kind. But at a restaurant this past weekend, I was tempted to try something out of sheer dislike: Pibb Xtra.
I had heard of the developments over in Pibbland, where the Dr is just a Mr., and he's a Pibb instead of a Pepper. And something called Xtra was emerging... but what was this xtra? And what's with all of the bad spelling? I decided to find out. I took my emptied cup up to the fountain where Pibb Xtra was being served, ice cold. I tried it... and... lo and behold, it tasted funny! Imagine a drink somewhere between Dr Pepper and Diet Dr Pepper with more flavor than the latter, but not as intensely unique as the former. Pibb Xtra is pretty close to that. It's okay, but nothing I'd drink out of choice. That said, these quotes from the Coke site are telling: Mr. Pibb appeals to 12-to-15 year olds who are just gaining independence from home and looking for things to call their own. Mr. Pibb enables them to have an uninhibited, fun and unconventional attitude because it has the sweet, refreshing bold taste they need to express their independence. Finally, we've discovered the best way to express the independence of youth: by drinking a sweet, freshing, bold beverage loaded with sugar and caffeine and bottled by a heartless multinational corporation! Oh, but wait: [Pibb Xtra's] bold taste and graphics appeal to young adults who are looking to get the most out of life and the most out of their soft drink. Based on its tremendous success in Texas, Pibb Xtra will replace Mr Pibb across the U.S. in 2002. That's right! Pibb Xtra will give young kids a life. And if you've already got one, it'll enhance it! Imagine... no lack of life! And I don't know about you, but I'm tired of not getting the most out of my soft drink. What has Pepsi done for me lately, hm? Comments

DATE: Tuesday July 16, 2002 -- 9:54:49 am This is all I need for a new life? Damn! What am I waiting for? FROM: Paul DATE: Tuesday July 16, 2002 -- 1:11:10 pm Robert, I saw that drink this weekend and was tempted... but opted for a trusty Vanilla Coke instead. FROM: Chris [E-Mail] DATE: Tuesday July 16, 2002 -- 2:56:05 pm we consume diet DP by the gallons in my family. I wonder if Coke will ever produce a diet version of Pibb? FROM: Robert [E-Mail] DATE: Tuesday July 16, 2002 -- 4:48:13 pm Diet Mr Pibb could not touch the awesome power of DDP. FROM: Matt DATE: Wednesday July 17, 2002 -- 12:37:32 am I'm glad the popularity in Texas determines somethings future success in the U.S.A. When I was in Illinois at a festival two weeks ago the kids were drinking this stuff up. It may have been the 49 grams of sugar that kept them coming back for more. FROM: Jed DATE: Wednesday July 17, 2002 -- 2:35:05 pm Isn't it all just cherry cola? The wonder of bottled Dr. Pepper is it's relative stability and lack of perfume notes. Most of the other brands I've tried are often good sometimes, and bad at others depending on the batch. Dr. Pepper is also often inconsistent, but it is the least inconsistent. Whatever that artificial flavoring is, it must take a team of chemists to tame. Dr. Pepper from the soda fountain however is always a crap shoot. FROM: Robert [E-Mail] DATE: Wednesday July 17, 2002 -- 8:38:03 pm I tried Red Fusion this evening. It tastes like DDP mixed with cherry lollipop flavoring watered-down to the point where there's barely any flavor. No thank you, sir, I do not want another. FROM: Marcus Mackey DATE: Monday August 5, 2002 -- 11:03:28 pm I think the soda companies are reaching extreme boredom and seek to try any alternative mixture/concoction they can come up with hoping to hit a new-age homerun. Most often, this results in horrible results like Crystal Pepsi (nothing horrible but nothing pleasing either), Mt. Dew Code Red (how can anyone drink this stuff? Seriously!), etc. etc. Even to my tastebuds (sorry to the VCoke people), even Vanilla Coke falls into this category to me. I just can't find any appeal in any of it. FROM: Heather DATE: Sunday January 5, 2003 -- 12:01:42 pm I conducted a taste test between Dr. Pepper and Mr. Pibb for a school project, and I'd like to share a few things I learned in the process: the official name for these "pepperlike drinks" is "spicy cherry" -- so, Jed, not just a cherry cola-- Cherry Coke and Mr. Pibb have very different flavors. Incidentally, Mr. Pibb was preferred every single time in my taste test. FROM: vlm DATE: Thursday January 9, 2003 -- 12:23:56 pm I much prefer the Blue Sky brand's rendition, Dr. Becker, to the other spicy cherry drinks; nevertheless, Pibb was the historic favorite, if only because of its relative scarcity in my market. FROM: mel DATE: Thursday January 9, 2003 -- 2:52:48 pm Marcus: I am in awe of your expository and analytical skills. My goodness... FROM: WCP14 DATE: Wednesday January 22, 2003 -- 5:07:28 pm All I have to say is I am a big Wild Cherry Pepsi fan,but I also do like Dr.Pepper and Mr.Pibb tastes alomost exactly like Dr.Pepper, weather they will admit it or not......Cherry Coke and Mountain Dew Code Red,BAD,WILD CHERRY PEPSI GOOD!?!?!?!?!?! FROM: Keith Stine DATE: Thursday June 12, 2003 -- 12:20:05 am I wanted to know what the "Xtra" was. FROM: David DATE: Thursday June 19, 2003 -- 3:02:54 pm I'm with Keith Stine, it's Xtra Marketing and Coke wanting Xtra and all the soft drinks in the world to be sold marketed and distributed by Coke. FROM: gf h DATE: Wednesday December 3, 2003 -- 7:48:44 pm barbie are you 7 FROM: Helen DATE: Monday May 10, 2004 -- 7:08:40 pm Mr. Pibb was good...can't find it anymore...
