I'm an obsessive catalogger. I searched a dozen CD database programs to find the perfect one for storing information about my CD collection. After that program's development came to a halt, I took nearly two years before finding another program to take its place (my decision swung heavily by the author's willingness to convert my old database to his software's format). I would never have thought that a high quality DVD catalogging program would be available as freeware (and optionally, as inexpensive shareware). Boy was I wrong: DVD Profiler kicks ass! Keeping track of your DVDs is as easy as entering the UPC code on the back cover. The rest of the information is downloaded from a central server, providing you with IMDB-like search capabilities on the subset that is your DVD collection. It also allows you to enter where you purchased the DVD (fully customizable), how much you paid for it, your rating for the movie, and your rating for the DVD. To top it off, you can also keep track of your wish list (which provides one-click price comparisons at the major online retailers) and your "on order" items. I love coming across an application that feels right from the moment I start using it. Opera did it for me, CDStore97 did it for me, The Bat! did it for me, and now DVD Profiler is the latest addition to that list. I encourage you to give it a shot. The best answer to any catalogging is to invest a little money and some time in a good database program such as Excel. I just got my collection up in running on DVD Profiler. All I can say is WOW...what a time saver. I had been kicking around the idea of creating my own movie database when I stubled on to this.
