The lyric stinks like beer!

Oasis is/was good for some terrible lyrics. How about, "Slowly walking down the wall/Faster than a cannonball." Ambiguity is powerful. Contradiction is just sloppy.

Live got their "start" here in my hometown (not York, but Lancaster!) and they angered many locals, fans and other musicians alike, by talking trash about the area. Hello, they would be no where (wait, that's where they currently are!) had it not been for a supportive local community.

I for one never liked them. A bit to arrogant for a bunch of young guys from York. Sure they sold lots of records, but is that an accurate measure of one's true worth? It is obviously not a measure of one's lyrical ability.

Have you ever gotten one of those quizzes full of 80s lyrics? I am sure that we could find lots of horrible stuff there. I think there is a website called www.80s.com . Bands like Winger and White Snake come to mind, and while we are at it, how about Nelson?

Pop music is fast food for the head, it's not supposed to be full of timeless lyrics. If it was, it wouldn't be "popular".

One of my favorites used to be from that one Patrick Swayze song from Dirty Dancing, "She's like the wind"... the first line went "She's like the wind... through my trees."

It all points to the fact that we're all getting old.

Ummm - what the person writing the lyrics is usually trying to protray, is not something that you'd see everyday... Most Lyrics are written to inspire someone that's probably drunk or on drugs, or maybe the person writing the was at the time on either or both. Music NEVER tends to hit reality...musicians try to create "their own sense" of reality - but it's usually a bit on the foggy side of things. It's usually used to control mood. and the lyrics are never meant to be taken rationally - use a little spiritual sense - it's the "feeling" that you're trying to get - you have to listen to the music as well as the lyrics...if we analyzed just lyrics, most of the time - I agree they do sound FOOLISH! - but when the music is added - it sounds all better. If you really want to read some good lyrics look up the band RUSH. They have some of the best! But most of the time when actually listening to the songs, you can't really tell what they're saying...almost as if they meant it to be that way for some strange reason. All I can say is all of us musicians will always be strange in our own unique way!

I have to say; Live is one of my absolute favorite bands of all time, but I feel the same way about the whole 'puke stinks like beer' line. I still think 'Century' is a great song, but I cringe every time I hear that line (multiple times in the same song, no less).
Regardless, maybe the puke really did stink like beer.

Let's not forget; there are some other classic bad song lyrics on the very same album; Secret Samadhi is full of lines that kind of make you wonder what the hell was going on in Eddie's mind when he wrote them. They sound great in the songs, mind you, just don't take the time to stop and think about them. You got classics like:

Angel, don't you have some bagels in my oven?

Crazy lady with the shiny shoes, where are you?

Free love was just a party for the hippies to ruin

I fell in love with a balladeer
I saw your tongue, it licked my heart
They called you queer

(One of my personal favorites): You know your sperm is weak.

When they lanced his skull, there was pus and light.


It's a classic album; I mean, how often can you hear about vomit, pus, and sperm on the same album where a discussion of heart licking is undertaken?

Ok, pop songs, like Greg C. said bac in January, usually don't have timeless lyrics. The song "Summer Girls" by LFO, though, has to be the absolute stupidest song I have ever heard. It's almost as if the boys sat around trying to write, saying.."What the hell rhymes with Paul Revere?".

Sample lyrics to make the head spin:

"You're the best girl that I ever did see..
The great Larry Bird Jersey 33..."

"There was a good man named Paul Revere..
I feel much better baby when you're near."

"When you take a sip, you buzz like a hornet..Billy Shakespeare wrote a whole bunch of sonnets."

I think this is a misheard lyric from a song called "Voices Carry" by a group called Til Tuesday.
The real words are "Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry."

There's a neat website that has misheard lyrics for this and many other songs, including some I thought were the real words, too. It's called Amiright, and I put the link to it in the "web" form on this message.
They also have a message board where people discuss different decades, and their general-discussion board is called "Playful Penguin Place". (I know guys, but I didn't make that website) I post on those boards sometimes, and submitted a few misheard lyrics myself. They also have where people can send in parodies they make, and I sent in one that I made. (A song about "Pink Lady & Jeff" using of all things, Janis Ian's "Society's Child". Go figure.)

I'm sorry I took up so much webspace, I guess I better go now.
