Both Ryan and I are equipped with MP3 players. I own an iPod, and Ryan has a Creative Nomad Jukebox. While I won't speak for him (this time), I will say that having an MP3 player totally changes the way I listen to music.
I do get amazed that computing has come this far: all 3,000+ songs I own are now in a package the size of a deck of cards. I can listen to any one I want, at any time. I don't need to be in front of a computer to do this, and that's the best part. Sure, I often toted around my portable CD player, but it used regular batteries (ugh) and naturally, could only play whatever was on that CD. To me, it feels a bit like TiVo: this is the way music should be. The packaging? Sure, I do miss that a bit. But when it comes down to it, the mere ability to play any song that I own that might also be dancing around in my head, at any time, is awfully nice. You should get one. Comments

FROM: Dave Walls [E-Mail] DATE: Friday May 16, 2003 -- 11:21:59 am I am definitely in love with my MP3 player, as well. It's actually an older model Intel 3000 series, which only has 96 Megs of space on it, but it's still fantastic..it's almost like having that perfect mix tape ready whenever you want. FROM: Chris [E-Mail] DATE: Friday May 16, 2003 -- 12:11:14 pm I have an older model Rio 500 which I just upgraded to 192 MB. It holds about 3 hours of music - so it's not like having an Ipod. I usually let WinAmp randomly sort my music directory, then copy the the first 3 hours over. FROM: Monica DATE: Friday May 16, 2003 -- 12:24:21 pm I got an Archos Jukebox for Christmas, and starting yesterday I finally have time to put stuff on it. I'm amazed how much I'll be able to put on there. I don't have anywhere near the volume of your cd collection, Ryan, but holy crap! (spinning in chair with glee) I can put my whole collection (and what I like from my boyfriend's) in 20 gig ... and still have room for more!! FROM: Ryan DATE: Friday May 16, 2003 -- 3:08:23 pm What I love about devices like these which really change the way you play/work/whatever is that active communities always spring up around them, innovating with applications and whatnot... the iPod certainly has its community and the Nomad crew hangs out over at NomadWorld.com... FROM: aharris DATE: Monday May 19, 2003 -- 2:17:00 pm The Nomad Jukebox was given as a gift about 2 weeks before the iPod came out. Damn I hate it. FROM: Ryan DATE: Monday May 19, 2003 -- 2:51:36 pm Arquay -- of course, it should be pointed out that Creative also has the Nomad Zen which is very similar to the iPod and is (I believe) lighter. FROM: Ryan DATE: Monday May 19, 2003 -- 2:52:25 pm (BTW, Arquay -- have you updated the Firmware? It's changed a dozen times or so since the "base" version and sports a LOT of improvements...) FROM: Rob [E-Mail] DATE: Tuesday May 20, 2003 -- 9:42:13 am The Nomad Jukebox 3 looks pretty sweet. And it's much cheaper than an iPod. The iPod would be neat if it weren't so freakin' expensive. :P FROM: Dave H DATE: Thursday June 5, 2003 -- 5:29:02 pm I just got a brand new 10gb IPOD.. its awesome.. 200+ songs on it alredy!! FROM: Dave DATE: Thursday June 5, 2003 -- 5:31:20 pm BTW - the new IPOD still does not work on the PC correctly using MM jukebox 8 but a great program EPHPOD does everything and more!!! FROM: Ken DATE: Wednesday January 5, 2005 -- 10:51:26 pm I got a Napster mp3 player for christmas and I love it! I should get an ipod or some other high gig player, i had mine for like two days now and it is already 75% full, but i listen to all the songs.
