When Pinger Robert mentioned Pepsi Vanilla, I was mildly excited... as excited as one can be for a soft drink, I guess. After all, the rare times I drink soda, I opt for Vanilla Coke, and since I have no brand loyalty, another option couldn't be a bad thing. My excitement subsided when I saw Pepsi Vanilla's slogan, though: "The not-so-vanilla vanilla." What kind of wussy slogan is that? Who's the marketing genius that said, "We have a vanilla product coming on the market? OK, well, rather than play up to the fact it's vanilla, let's just say it's not too vanilla..." I'm guessing that since Pepsi was late in the vanilla cola game, they felt the need to make some sort of "But it's better than Coke's, really!" statement. And I guess they heard some people say that Vanilla Coke had too much vanilla (personally, I think it could use a little more... then again, I used to sniff vanilla extract jars for fun, so what's my opinion worth?). In any event, it's got to be one of the most lackluster, limp attempts at breaking into a market ever. As for the soda itself: it has almost no vanilla flavor. It's almost indistinguishable from regular Pepsi. Comments

DATE: Monday August 18, 2003 -- 8:50:31 am Diet Vanilla Coke is my carbonated beverage of choice these days. FROM: Paul DATE: Monday August 18, 2003 -- 9:31:08 am So it's really Pepsi-flavored Pepsi. I'll pass. FROM: Greg DATE: Monday August 18, 2003 -- 9:40:59 am From that slogan I can tell if I were to break open a can of "not so" Vanilla Pepsi, I'll just be drinking Pepsi. I give it a month before it's completely off the shelves. I wonder how many millions of dollars they sunk into this gem. FROM: Ryan DATE: Monday August 18, 2003 -- 10:13:11 am My prediction: within a few days, the angry masses of Pepsi Vanilla fans will begin swarming the Ping. FROM: Miss Lisa DATE: Monday August 18, 2003 -- 11:27:35 am Is Crystal Pepsi that clear Pepsi stuff that came out in the mid-90's? Yuck! Although I did like the Van Halen commercials... FROM: IanC DATE: Monday August 18, 2003 -- 12:42:08 pm Have never heard of Crystal Pepsi.. FROM: Ryan DATE: Monday August 18, 2003 -- 1:38:12 pm Lisa's right -- Crystal Pepsi came around somewhere in the early 90s and was basically a clear liquid that tasted like Pepsi. Here's a big picture of it. FROM: Dave Walls [E-Mail] DATE: Monday August 18, 2003 -- 3:09:11 pm Oohh..I miss Crystal Pepsi!! My family and I drank mass quantities of the stuff. When we heard it was being discontinued, we stocked up on it, buying up remaining stock from the stores..we were drinking Crystal Pepsi for at least 2 years after it was finished. *sigh* FROM: Robert [E-Mail] DATE: Monday August 18, 2003 -- 6:11:19 pm I thought the slogan wasn't referring to a lower level of vanilla than Coke's version, but to the idea it's not boring (a less common use of the word "vanilla"). FROM: Ryan DATE: Tuesday August 19, 2003 -- 5:21:32 pm A Wall Street Journal article confirms that Pepsi's slogan refers to their "lighter" vanilla flavoring. FROM: Robert [E-Mail] DATE: Tuesday August 19, 2003 -- 6:13:26 pm Yeah, normally I don't give advertisers that much credit. Bastards. FROM: towinlovinit DATE: Tuesday August 19, 2003 -- 7:10:01 pm I am not much of a coke fan. There vanilla coke is too much. The vanilla pepsi is not too bad, doesn't mean I will buy it regularly. I have pretty much stopped buying it because it causes such tooth damage. The vanilla in the pepsi is just mild enough to be enjoyable. FROM: IanC DATE: Wednesday August 20, 2003 -- 9:15:07 am When I read the Vanilla Pepsi slogan on the Ping, I actually assummed that it was the alternative definition of vanilla that was intended. I still thought it was pretty lame though. FROM: Greg C DATE: Friday August 22, 2003 -- 2:12:56 pm I should say that the Diet Pepsi Vanilla is amazing as far as diet drinks go. You can really taste the aspartame in Diet Pepsi, but in Diet Vanilla, the vanilla sort of masks the aspartame! Seriously, try it if you get a chance. FROM: Somefreakyguy [E-Mail] DATE: Wednesday August 27, 2003 -- 1:31:56 am HMmm... I'm pretty sure the BDSM/alternative lifestyle lingo was what they were hinting at with the NOT-SO-VANILLA vanilla comment. Just look at the commercial with the two guys in the cola delivery trucks. The Coke guy is listening to tame (/lame) music with no sub-woofer action... and then the cool Pepsi guy shows what he's packing and gets serious street credit with his crappy choice in music... FROM: david DATE: Tuesday June 29, 2004 -- 7:29:37 am this is so cool FROM: joe DATE: Tuesday June 29, 2004 -- 7:36:10 am i really like this FROM: joe DATE: Tuesday June 29, 2004 -- 7:36:29 am i really like this FROM: Donnie Worley DATE: Monday January 9, 2006 -- 3:05:39 pm My local retailer told me that they were discontinueing the diet vanella pepsi product. Has anyone else heard this. FROM: gorge DATE: Friday April 7, 2006 -- 3:32:13 pm Coca-cola discontinued Vanilla Coke (Diet & Regular) in Dec 2005. Looks like Pepsi is getting set to do the same thing as of this date. If you like it, better go out and buy it up quick--or you'll wind up paying an outrageous fee for it on e-bay ( as the vanilla Cokes are being sold for now) if you really miss it later! FROM: tracy DATE: Thursday July 6, 2006 -- 5:59:11 pm i have been trying to find a way to email pepsi because i am a dedicated pepsi vanilla drinker and am so tired of the cherry and dr pepper flavored drinks this was a nice change why don't they get rid of the lemon or lime flavored crap that they have out now. i used to like pepsi light which had a nice light lemon flavor but that new stuff is disguisting. i have gone to all the stores in the area and they are not carrying the vanilla pepsi anymore and it truly dissappoints me. do you know how to tell them? all my friends that try some of my drink love it and i think it was not enough time for it to catch on!!!!! how do i let them know? FROM: ND DATE: Monday July 31, 2006 -- 10:39:37 pm i loved pepsi vanilla and now they took it off the market for what? a new pepsi with lime! gross i hope we get it back in ND again that is all i like to drink now.. so mine is to just get the word out to bring it back to ND area i go through cases after case if i could buy it now but they took it off the shelfs in all the stores... i agree with the person on top of this page to BRING IT BACK GET RID OF THE OTHER NASTY STUFF BRING PEPSI VANILLA BACK PLEASE!!! SINCERLY A PEPSI VANILLA DRINKER ALL THE WAY FROM: NJ DATE: Tuesday August 1, 2006 -- 1:17:59 am OK. I'm bookmarking this page - you 'guys' made my evening. This is too funny! The best comedy routine I've heard in years - especially 'Somefreakyguy' and his Starburst comment. That'll put a smile on my face for DAYS!

Everytime I finally find something that I like to drink, the company stops deliverying it to my area. The marketing department has to be receiving bad informantion. Pepsi Vanilla sells here. I was hard to keep on the shelves. So, lets stop supplying it to my area. What is up with that crap???
