Here's a fact for you: all children born after 1988 may have never played with lawn darts.
Lawn darts were probably some of the last really dangerous toys that kids could get their hands on, and of course that meant they were incredibly fun. I remember quite vividly setting up the plastic rings on the grass, and then stepping back about 50 feet, tossing those heavy metal spiked darts, and hoping it didn't hit the tree. Lawn darts were yanked from the shelves in 1988 after three kids died from using them. However, some are still playing with fire. Comments

DATE: Saturday September 20, 2003 -- 1:02:45 am This is a funny coinicidence- I teach 8th grade and on friday I got into a discussion in study hall with my assistant and the teacher who's room we were in about Lawn Darts. None of the students had ever played it before, and I said that's because they were banned in the mid 80's due to being declared a safety hazzard. FROM: brant DATE: Saturday September 20, 2003 -- 1:06:51 am i think they would be most fun from high elevations, like a deck or otherwise, and with various fruit items.. FROM: Dave Walls [E-Mail] DATE: Saturday September 20, 2003 -- 7:41:26 am Oh HELL yeah. I will tool anyone at lawn darts..name the time and the place..I've still got mine from when I was younger. I think we need to play em whenever we have the first annual Pingers convention. Winner takes all Oreos. FROM: Chris [E-Mail] DATE: Saturday September 20, 2003 -- 9:13:13 am I had them too, although I don't remember being a particularly big fan of Lawb Darts. We never had a big enough yard to really let loose with them. FROM: Matt DATE: Saturday September 20, 2003 -- 12:57:17 pm I still have my set somewhere at my parent's house. I second Dave's idea to play them at a Ping Convention. When will this convention be? next summer? FROM: jk DATE: Saturday September 20, 2003 -- 4:50:12 pm We should indeed have a convention. It's most fun if you get your friends to hold the target hoops in the air like a basket ball hoop. FROM: Zach DATE: Thursday March 11, 2004 -- 10:39:52 am Lawn darts are great, I used to play with them at my grandmother's house...I wonder what happened to them. FROM: Joseph DATE: Thursday March 11, 2004 -- 11:34:43 am See how quick something that kills a few dummies can get banned? FROM: Ken DATE: Friday December 17, 2004 -- 8:51:44 pm Wow, seems you really struck it with this ping, my neighbor had those a couple years ago and i was thinking about how dangerous they were when i saw the name of them in the recent comments. Well, his were like metal and covered in plastic at the tips so they were pretty heavy, i got hit in the shin once and it hurt, we were played right tho, we were using them to play x-dodgeball, that was an even better game, since no one had like a whole lot of the same balls we all just got to go to our house and got 5 "weapons" and had an everyman for himself battle, yea i think those were on the banned list after the incident tho. Yea, i mean just cause 3 retards kill themsleves doesnt mean they should be illegal, i mean how many people do u thing have died from bikes? and i wanna go to the ping convention! you should hold it in pittsburgh. FROM: Jen Jag DATE: Sunday January 2, 2005 -- 10:53:00 pm I have a set of Jarts! Interested folks please email jagomatic@comcast.net for photos. Thanks! FROM: Paul Ellis DATE: Tuesday January 4, 2005 -- 2:31:52 pm You would think that somebody would have come up with a comparable, yet acceptable, alternative to lawn darts by now. I was never a big fan of yarts because of the dangers of getting a steel spike through the skull but the concept of the game seems fun. I've searched some there aren't any comparable alternitives. Bean bags with tails, how boring. If something did come out to replace them Iwonder if it would catch on? Truly with all the dangers already present in this world, it would be terrible for a picnic or a family reunion to be broken up for a trip to the hospital or worst yet the morgue, because people are throwing steel spikes in the air. My family has been looking everywhere for lawn jarts. Dick's Sporting Goods pretended like they had them, but they lied and hurt my feelings. Now, I am willing to do anything to get a set. Ha ha. I can be contacted at kamibeddow@yahoo.com or kbeddow@niu.edu. For safety reasons, please put "LAWN JARTS" in the subject box so I don't delete it with my junk mail. Thanks!

Hey guys,

I just got kicked in the chops by eBay for trying to sell my Lawn Darts. Didn't know they were banned. These are "Kent Classic Lawn Darts". They have 2 scoring hoops and 4 metal tipped darts (yellow/red) The box is a bit roughed up and the darts have been used but it's all in good condition. They look just like Jarts. I'll consider any reasonable offer.

Hey all, I stumbled here from a google search. I have a complete set of Hasbro Javelin darts in VERY EXCELLENT condition. In the box with instructions and rules. I picked them up a few years back thinking my brothers and sisters might enjoy playing again. Well we never did find the time , so here they are up for sale. Make me an offer. This set is complete with very, very little use. (like maybe once or twice?) Please don't insult me with lowball offers. Thanks

I think we are all looking the problem of "not being able to get jarts" the wrong way. The biggest part of this problem is locating the plastic fins as the metal shaft and tip are virtually indestructible.
Anyone know how to make things out of plastic? How hard would it be to make some of these fins? I used an injection molder years ago in high school. Inj molding tech should work great to make fins. Any ideas? --Tor

Love the comments about the Jarts and your experiences! I just picked a set up at a yard sale.. I remember playing game and it was great fun. I will allow my two boys to play the game, today .. as for the ban.. fireworks, trampolines, home pools, pool toys, guns, sling shots, bicycles, skateboards, roller blades, rocks and other devices immediately available in yard, boats, .... sigh ..... hmmmmmmmm....

Lawn darts are dangerous and unnecessary and innocent children were killed in accidents during the initial fad. If banning an unnecessary retail item saves a few lives per year then a responsible government does it. Canada did it with handguns and look at the impressively low gun murder rate which resulted (1/5 of USA's!) I find it very surprising that USA was thoughtful enough to recognize the danger of lawn darts but dim enough to allow Americans to continue slaughtering each other with legalized handguns.

I have a set that i got from selling newspaper subscriptions. They are made by Kent (#5417) and on display in my living room NEVER USED NEW IN BOX. It is funny because in the late 80's I tried to sell them in my moms garage sale for 50 cents, but nobody bought them! In the mid sixties my grandfather had a set and everyone played with them, but at 6 years old I was not allowed. I played with a vent pipe nearby and got stung by wasps!! so much for dangerous darts.

I would love to buy some lawn darts for my husband who use to play as a child with his grandmother. Please e-mail asap me if anyone is willing to part with theirs!
