Ten days vacation is almost too much. I took five days off of work for a trip to Chicago and Iowa from the 19th to the 29th, and had a great time. I got to do a lot of things in Chicago and got to sleep in late in Iowa. But, even so, after about a week, I was definitely ready to head home. Antsiness set in and I could almost feel the e-mail piling up at home and at work (I was only checking one of my accounts and that wasn't until late in the vacation). I think the optimal vacation length is somewhere between 5-7 days, not including travel time. This length is extended if the vacation days are spent at home rather than out-of-town. Your thoughts? DATE: Monday December 1, 2003 -- 8:59:16 am I disagree. I find that I spend the first 2 or 3 days of a vacation trying to relax, get used to not having to go to work, etc. and the last couple of days worrying about all the crap that I will need to do when I get back. I think 2 weeks would be the optimal vacation, because I would have the 7-9 days in the middle as a real vacation free from the stresses of my life. FROM: Dave Walls [E-Mail] DATE: Monday December 1, 2003 -- 9:24:19 am I agree with Chris here. Coming off a weeklong vacation in early November, I only really enjoyed about 3-4 days of it. The first day was just trying NOT to wake up at 5am, and the last day a half was getting ready to go back. FROM: Ryan DATE: Monday December 1, 2003 -- 12:08:39 pm Dave -- I checked in on my work e-mail once just to make sure there were no urgent matters that needed my attention. I checked my personal e-mail late in the vacation because a lot of people didn't even know I was going out of town... didn't want them to think I was ignoring them. :) FROM: Robert [E-Mail] DATE: Monday December 1, 2003 -- 10:22:00 pm Most of my "vacations" have been two days stuck on to a weekend. Usually that's plenty to set me right if I'm just staying at home. However, I've never had the time or money to take a real, long vacation, so it could easily be that I'd like those a lot better. FROM: Ryan DATE: Monday December 1, 2003 -- 10:47:15 pm I can't wait for January 6th FROM: Matt DATE: Monday December 1, 2003 -- 10:53:11 pm Ryan, FROM: Ryan [E-Mail] DATE: Tuesday December 2, 2003 -- 12:31:36 am That wasn't me, Matt. T'was an imposter. FROM: Jamie DATE: Saturday April 8, 2006 -- 4:47:06 pm The last trip I went on in L.A., my neurotic friend planned something for every day, getting affordable prices, with reservations, etc. Because we were following a schedule, honestly began to feel like work once we got there.

Jamie's got a bunch of great advice, IMHO!
My family adopted a made up word from one of my kids' best friends: Poozing. It means hanging out only doing what you want to do. In our case it usually includes lots of cold soft drinks, reading, old movies and casual conversations, with naps thrown in. NO PRESSURE. No requirement that if somebody gets a wild hare to go to the movies, or dig a trench or whatever, that anybody else join that person. But also no requirement that they NOT be joined in that activity. It is very autonomous yet cozy. I am reconsidering what to do about email on vacation. I love net surfing and my own bloggy journaling.... but if I got run over by a truck tomorrow, the world would not even hiccup on its axis. And worrying about professional concerns is NOT part of R & R so far as I can tell. Hope you've had a good vacation since you wrote this. © 2008 The Daily Ping, all rights reserved.
