The other afternoon, my boss and I were at a coffee shop. I got a hot chocolate, and he got decaf. He then said that he couldn't handle caffeine in the afternoon anymore, and that "changes as you get older." I agreed because I'm finding out that it's quite true.
When I was growing up, my primary beverage was soda. Regular soda, so it was full-on caffeine and sugar all the time. At one point I prided myself on having a vast selection of soda available - once I had an apartment for it, that is. But now? I don't drink nearly as much. I have coffee in the morning, and I might have soda with my lunch. But that's about it. Caffeine-free diet soda has gotten me "down" from caffeine all the time, but I also drink a lot of water. Are you hooked on the stuff? Comments

DATE: Thursday January 22, 2004 -- 10:21:56 am I wish I could stand coffee, but I just loathe the stuff. So when I've had insomnia, the morning cure is Mountain Dew. It seems so wrong, but I gotta work. Besides, last time I quit my blood pressure dropped ten points, when it was normal before. So I have an excuse. Yeah, that's the ticket. FROM: Chris [E-Mail] DATE: Thursday January 22, 2004 -- 10:52:40 am I've had to cut all caffeine after about mid morning. I still drink 2 or 3 cups of coffee in the morning, but after about 11 AM I avoid caffeine. The half life of caffeine in your system is about 12 hours - and I've found that caffeine in the afternoon will screw with my stomach at night, and my ability to sleep. FROM: Rob [E-Mail] DATE: Thursday January 22, 2004 -- 12:56:51 pm When I went off sugar, I went off soda, so there went my main caffeine source, since I can't stand coffee at all. I don't think I miss it and I didn't really have huge withdrawal symptoms, thankfully. FROM: Ryan [E-Mail] DATE: Thursday January 22, 2004 -- 1:36:13 pm I drink soda only occasionally... maybe once every couple of weeks, on average. I drink coffee even less rarely (two or three times a year). Of course, I'm a frequent tea drinker, usually three cups a day during the workweek and only occasionally will I have one on the weekend. The caffeine in the tea I drink runs from none to some, and while I was extremely sensitive to caffeine growing up (since my mom never had soda in the house), these days it doesn't seem to affect me either way. I don't get very hyper or affected by having caffeine and I don't really notice it when I haven't had any. It's a good situation. :) FROM: Dave Walls [E-Mail] DATE: Thursday January 22, 2004 -- 2:40:43 pm In addition to my traffic reporting duties, I work a Saturday morning news shift, producing the news while anchoring the sports desk, then I am a call screener for the following talkshow. Day starts at 5am, ends at one. FROM: Matt DATE: Thursday January 22, 2004 -- 4:30:01 pm I haven't had a soda since May 2000. I am not a coffe drinker either. When I have tea ocassionally it is decaf. FROM: jk DATE: Thursday January 22, 2004 -- 5:26:36 pm Too much info, don't say I didn't warn you: I drank an incredible amount of Coke as a student, and now it gives me the runs. FROM: lily DATE: Thursday January 22, 2004 -- 7:11:33 pm i think ;when one gets old the arouser to do certain things depreciate .so i think its d same as taking caffeine. FROM: Dave Walls [E-Mail] DATE: Thursday January 22, 2004 -- 9:04:45 pm FROM: Dave Walls [E-Mail] DATE: Thursday January 22, 2004 -- 9:05:38 pm Umm..."the arouser"? Caffeine ain't exactly Viagra, and trust me, there is no need for Viagra on this end, thank you very much.. FROM: Kate DATE: Thursday January 22, 2004 -- 11:10:45 pm I used to drink pop all day every day and never felt any effects. I gave up pop for Lent one year, and I had horrible caffeine headaches for the first few days. What's worse, though, was that I went straight back to the same amount as before, and let me tell you, I won't make that mistake again. Jitters and heart palpitations are not fun. The point is, you've got to be consistant with caffeine, or it will take its vengeance. FROM: Alex C. DATE: Friday January 23, 2004 -- 7:45:22 am Coffee, not beer as Homer S. proclaims, is the drink of life. I love the stuff, caffeinated, decaf, iced, hot, whatever. Since I get to work fairly early, a cup or three of caffeinated keeps me on schedule and focused. FROM: Ace High DATE: Friday January 23, 2004 -- 10:31:04 am Make sure your breakfast has all four foor groups sugar ,salt ,grease and caffeine. FROM: Alex DATE: Friday January 23, 2004 -- 10:36:39 am I agree with the notion that as you get older caffeine has a greater effect on your system. I used to drink 3-4 cups of coffee a day, 4-5 Cokes a day. Now that I'm 40ish, I have coffee on the weekends and I haven't had a Coke (or any type of soda) for over 3 years. Now, it's water, water, ooohhh, that cool, clear water. FROM: AC DATE: Wednesday February 4, 2004 -- 7:37:25 am Oh snap - coffee does have benefits!! There aren't any comments here yet.
