There are certain types of music I don't enjoy in bulk (modern country, most rap, most hair metal), but even those have their exceptions that I love. But then I can listen to things (noise, ambient, trance) that make other peoples' ears bleed.

And Mongolian goatherd ballads are lovely. Give 'em a chance. ;)

You hit the nail on the head, Ryan. For almost every musical genre you "don't like", you can probably name one exception that you can tolerate or like. I'm not a country music fan, but I kinda dig Joe Nichols. Go figure.

I think the big thing is to not close your ears off to different sounds just because it's different than what you are used to. Starting as a DJ for parties/dances/clubs helped me there. You gotta learn to tolerate all genres.

I think Mario means "pop" music. Pop isn't JUST Britney Spears, most "Today's Country" or "New Country", whatever they're calling it, is pop. Pop music with a twang and accent. Hell, some of it doesn't even have a twang OR an accent, it's just pop put out by some former country music singer, which is why they retain the market.

I will admit, I've given that line before, but now I'm more careful than that. It's a part of growing older and wiser, I think, but I can find music in virtually all genres that I like, but that doesn't necessarily mean I like the genres. I'm also keen enough to realize that no matter what the style or genre, music still follows certain guidelines, whether the artists realize it or not.

Take the pop ballad, for instance. There are a few formulas:

* Bridge Over Troubled Water... first verse sang at almost a whisper, second verse sang in a normal tone, third verse belted out to show off the singer's prowess. The Titanic theme follows this formula.

* The Key Change! Almost every pop ballad has a key change towards the end of the song. Make them stop! Please!

And everyone loves the old intro -verse - verse - chorus - verse - bridge - chorus - keychange formula.

I remember reading a long time ago about Nirvana..one of their albums was gonna be named "Verse Chorus Verse", mocking "pop" music. Of course, Nirvana's stuff followed that format, so....go figure.

Robert, if you were willing to spend some time on amazon or borrow a friend's CDs, I know I could tell you about some "contemporary" Christian music that you would not hate. Seriously. I am a former huge alternative music fan (well, that's not entirely true--I still like what I liked in the 80s, but not what's called "alternative" today), so you can't label all fans of Christian music in a certain way.

Going way off topic, or am I, I actually cried during VH1's "Bands Reunited" when the Alarm were on. If that concert had been in the US and I had known about it, I would have been there beyond a doubt.

Hmmm, I'm pretty sure I didn't label CC fans at all. Not here, anyway.

I have no interest in learning more about Christian rock because I don't care to support preaching. There could be a band or singer out there who would interest me, but he/she/they would have to compete with the many great secular artists that already crowd my boxes of CDs.

I agree with dave, I typically dont listen to like orchestral music, but i could get into some good stuff, there isnt anytype of music that i actually cant stand. maybe. Like i like all types of song my mp3 has jay z/ linkin park, toby keith, simple plan, ludacris, jimmy wayne, shaggy, yea well you get the point.
