Mystery Stains

I used to get orange stains on my clothes in this one apartment I lived in; I determined that it was RUST (!) coming from the washing machine, yet they would not and could not fix it. It was very frustrating.

For a time, we had orange colored stains on our clothes, too. And it actually turned out to be a problem with the dryer. Not sure if it was rust or what, but a new belt on the dryer fixed everything. Thankfully, those days are long gone...

I find that my mystery stains usually have more to do with poor food aim-- hand to mouth coordination--than anything truly a mystery.

I did get a mystery stain once, on the shirt I'm wearing right now, as a matter of fact (got compliments on this shirt just today, even). It was the size of a nickel, just above the breast pocket. It's one of my favorite shirts and I was heartbroken. But I didn't retire it (officially). It remained unworn in my wardrobe while I tried this spot remover or that spot remover. I think the stain was caused by rust from who knows where? Anyway, after all the big well-known spot removers failed, I found one that worked and the stain completely disappeared!!
I think it's called Rust-O or something like that.

My best (worst) mystery stain story: while in college, my room mate washed and dried a roller ball pen, which were sort of new at the time. The cap came off of the pen and the rear end of the pen lodged in the vent holes in the back of the dryer. The pen stuck straight out, writing end out and it didn't explode--rather, it drew curly cues all over my nice load of white T-shirts, underwear and socks as they tumbled by. What else do you have in college? That was basically my entire wardrobe besides jeans.

The jerk just laughed at me and refused to wash my clothes again, or do anything to make it better. He just said, "Dude, that's my pen," after I yelled at him about it.

.....kind of like a Spirograph design! I hate to say it, but I would have liked to have seen the outcome.

I forgot this one: while in college, I was washing sheets and whites, and the person who had used the machine before me had dyed something red. I kid you not. Everything turned pastel pink, including many pairs of white socks. And a beloved concert shirt. I tried to bleach everything right away, but boy did that dye hold its grip. After that, every time I did laundry, I wiped my hand inside the machine to see if it was safe before putting my stuff in.

I knew my room mate's thoughtless ways before I put my clothes in the dryer, and always made a habit of making sure the coast was clear before running laundry. However, the black pen in the black hole in the back of the dryer escaped my probing eye. That made the disaster burn all the worse.

As far as the design, it just looked like black circular scribbles. It wasn't all that exciting, but it did start a few conversations. I couldn't afford new clothes, so I had to wear them. The socks and underwear I was able to bleach with moderate success because they were all white. The t-shirts, however, including beloved concert T's, could not be bleached. Since I had no other clothes, I had to live with it.

It's okay, I got the jerk back somehow, I just don't remember how. I think I made out with the girl he had a huge crush on but was too timid to make a move on. There were a number of girls on his list to fit that description, and I think I got numero uno. I didn't make out with her to get him back at all, but it was nice incidental revenge. When he found out, he nearly cried.

It was so long ago, though, all I really remember is the outrage and the flippant culprit. What happened after that gets cloudy.

mysterious yellow stains on white clothes are usually attributed to bleach stains... it happens when the water is either too hard or too soft to fully rinse the clothes... try using less bleach or adding some blueing to your whites.

Last year when I lived in the dorm, I had a real mystery. Most of my panties are black thongs and when I would get them out of the dryer and fold them, I would notice dried white stains on the crotch area of my thongs. Obviously, I know that it is normal for a healthy 18 year old girl to produce wetness in that area during the day which will look white when dried, but this was AFTER I had washed them and dried them. I just passed it off several wash times as the detergent not getting all my 'juice' out, and this is kind of gross, but it turns out that a guy from the same floor as the laundry was taking my panties (and other girls) panties out of the driers and 'cumming' in them and then putting them back. This was unbelievable to me that someone would do that, so I just want to alert others to the fact that this may be happening if you have mystery stains on your 'clean' panties too.

Shared washers and dryers are the worst part of living in an apartment. I can deal with the noise and being unable to upgrade major appliances, but people are not very considerate in the laundry room.

The washers almost always have crusts of detergent and bleach on the lid, under the lid, and in little crevices. I don't mind when doing whites, but some of my black jeans now have little bleached-out areas.

And the dryers. Let's just say that people with reusable diapers should not be allowed to use the same dryers.

As to stains: it could also be bugs biting you, or getting squished as you move around. I've had a few of those.

It's pretty obvious when it is a food stain based on location and size. If it's recent you can try dish detergent to loosen out the oils. If not... join the spot club!

Ok, Ok lets get back to Kara's panties. I am not interested in the guy that was busting nuts in your panties Kara just the panties themselfs and the 18 year old "Natural" discharge that you experience throughout the day. I have had two new (and expensive) shirts ruined by mysterious brown stains on different occasions. They went in the wash 'clean' and came out covered in brown blotches like they had been worn by a mad axeman. Nothing else in the load was affected.

After puzzling about these for years, I have finally worked out that the stains were wisteria sap. I had popped out in my office clothes for a bit of innocent pruning and brushed against the cut stems. Realisation dawned after I had hacked the whole lot down in old clothes which came out of the wash clean but very stained!

Apparently this is not restricted to wisteria but it seems to be one of the main culprits.
