For the past three days, I've had the theme to The Greatest American Hero stuck in my head. That, and George Costanza's answering machine message riff on it. But the 70s seemed to be a time when theme songs still mattered - most shows nowadays have instrumental themes or none at all. With that in mind I ask you, Pingers, to name your favorite 70s TV theme song. And woe to anyone who answers 60 Minutes. Comments

DATE: Tuesday September 28, 2004 -- 9:05:00 am Greatest American Hero was good, but man, it's not even close: What's Happening?!!, of course. FROM: Dave Walls [E-Mail] DATE: Tuesday September 28, 2004 -- 9:56:43 am I'd put the theme song to The White Shadow at the top of my list. Funky-ass music to start one of the more underrated shows of the 70's. FROM: Chris [E-Mail] DATE: Tuesday September 28, 2004 -- 10:46:04 am The theme from S.W.A.T. Just try and claim that you never ran around the neighborhood playing cops and robbers while loudly doing the theme. FROM: Rafael DATE: Tuesday September 28, 2004 -- 11:12:58 am The Munsters and who can forget Electric Company (Heyyyy you Guyyyyys!!!) FROM: Joe Revees DATE: Tuesday September 28, 2004 -- 11:28:01 am Gotta go with The Rockford Files. FROM: Amy DATE: Tuesday September 28, 2004 -- 1:12:17 pm Those Were the Days, of course, from All in the Family!! :) FROM: aharris DATE: Tuesday September 28, 2004 -- 3:43:57 pm Good Times by far! FROM: Joseph DATE: Tuesday September 28, 2004 -- 9:21:49 pm No, no to all above. By far the best jam for a theme song was Barney Miller. It started off with those heavy lone electric bass riffs, joined first by a sizzling high hat, bongos and then off to full jammin' jazz ensemble complete with a wild horn section. IIRC, I think the theme song actually won jazz awards. FROM: Greg DATE: Wednesday September 29, 2004 -- 3:10:12 pm Dukes of Hazzard was a good one. My Mom just got me the first season on DVD and I can listen to it all the time. Or at least until I want to take Waylon's guitar and smash it over my head. My vote would have to be for Hill Street Blues. No words, just good music. FROM: Joseph DATE: Wednesday September 29, 2004 -- 6:29:51 pm Wasn't Hill Street Blues an 80's show? FROM: Joseph DATE: Wednesday September 29, 2004 -- 6:32:07 pm Hill Street Blues FROM: Greg DATE: Thursday September 30, 2004 -- 9:47:37 am How about that. I would have bet that the show started in the 70s. Thanks for the correction Joseph. Then it is Dukes of Hazzard that gets my vote for the best 70s theme song. FROM: cate DATE: Thursday September 30, 2004 -- 11:26:42 am I'm troubled that no one has mentioned the theme song from "the Brady Bunch" - It told a story, for criminy sake! A whole story! And any song you can listen to while watching endentured servant, Ann B. Davis's disembodied head gets the thumbs up from me! FROM: Ryan [E-Mail] DATE: Thursday September 30, 2004 -- 11:31:05 am Bosom Buddies, though a great show, was indeed released in the 80s. It only ran for a season or two, IIRC. FROM: redgotee1206 DATE: Wednesday October 6, 2004 -- 9:51:53 am wow - what cool blog topic... FROM: Sam DATE: Thursday October 28, 2004 -- 3:05:02 pm My vote goes to Wonder Woman. Those horns over the base guitar in the background is a great combination. FROM: TOM DATE: Thursday November 18, 2004 -- 6:15:15 pm ROOM 222-Do you remember? FROM: Bill DATE: Monday March 7, 2005 -- 8:25:12 pm Dukes of Hazzard was the best damn theme song ever. A dumbass knows that FROM: Garry from alabama DATE: Monday March 7, 2005 -- 8:27:46 pm Fuckin right Dukes of Hazzard was and still is the best ever and no fuck up show can change it FROM: Emmerson DATE: Tuesday June 28, 2005 -- 3:25:28 am I think "I Dream of Jeanie" was the best theme from the '70s. You gotta love that jingle. FROM: TV-A-Holic DATE: Tuesday October 18, 2005 -- 8:56:10 pm All In The Family, Good Times, ZOOM! Who can choose just one? They were all so good... FROM: \"Game Show Man\" Joe Van Ginkel [E-Mail] DATE: Tuesday October 18, 2005 -- 10:50:46 pm I'm partial to the theme from Match Game myself. :D FROM: Matt DATE: Wednesday November 23, 2005 -- 5:47:39 pm I hate to break it to you but the greatest american hero is also an 80's theme song. It aired from 81 to 83 FROM: Steve A. DATE: Thursday November 24, 2005 -- 3:37:35 pm I'm only adding this because it was on as late as 1971; Hogan's Heroes. I was at an Air Force Base outside of London many years ago getting a flight physical done. I heard the theme on muzak in the waiting room... sheesh...
