Recently, I've been trying to smile and say hello to neighbors when I'm out walking the dog. I realized that I just don't know many of them and if I'm not going to make the effort to learn their names, I should at least greet them pleasantly when I'm out and about. While most people smile and say hello back, I have noticed there are a number of people who just shouldn't be living anywhere near people because apparently saying hello is too much of a hassle. With these people, who are thankfully few and far between, I've gotten a range of responses ranging from a slight nod accompanied by a frown and a glare to "SOME DOG'S BEEN SHITTING IN MY YARD!" (seriously -- this was how one neighbor responded to my friendly "Good morning!"). I realize some people's lives may be pretty miserable and they don't want to have any interaction with people, but really, man, if that's the case, consider moving to the woods or something. A "hey" doesn't take a whole lot of effort. This message has been brought to you by the Ping Politeness Campaign for America and Freedom and Freedom America. Comments

DATE: Wednesday May 31, 2006 -- 2:12:53 pm I think I can guess exactly where some of those of the unfriendly folks live :) FROM: Michelle DATE: Wednesday May 31, 2006 -- 2:25:24 pm Ryan, FROM: Ryan [E-Mail] DATE: Wednesday May 31, 2006 -- 2:28:45 pm Actually, all of the folks I've encountered on your old street have been fine. The people from the one house you're thinking of (I think) are hardly ever out... think I've only seen them once or twice. But I'm not down there as frequently -- my problems have come from my own street and across Plaza in that other neighborhood. FROM: Riley DATE: Thursday June 1, 2006 -- 12:16:38 am I can see your point about being more friendly. However, I can also feel the other guys pain concerning the dog issue. There are people on my block who either can't or won't keep their dogs in their own yard. It is such a pain to come home to find out that they got into the trash and have strewn it all over the yard . Or that the dogs have been using my patio as a toilet all day. I don't have a dog for a reason, I hate cleaning up after them, but now I have to clean up after other peoples dogs. /rant On a side note Ryan you seem like a responsible dog owner, and I have no problem with people who like dogs and keep them, just in their own yard. FROM: Suzanne Lanoue [E-Mail] DATE: Thursday June 1, 2006 -- 12:39:31 am What state do you live in? We have lived all over and I find it really makes a huge difference...in California, people don't know their neighbors, for the most part, and people ignore each other pretty well. I think it's because people tend to move around much more there. If you grew up there as we did, it's just "Normal" and it seems weird to live in a place where neighbors are friendly. Unnatural, even. But we have gotten used to it. FROM: Darin DATE: Friday June 2, 2006 -- 9:40:00 pm found the site and unjammed my garbage disposal in five minutes. yeah, people are pretty closed off these days. i still greet most people i make eye contact with and let the chips fall as they may. i've never been hit yet, and have made alot of friends along the way. we're all in this profoundly mixed up world together afterall. i think alot of people avoid others simply because they feel more secure in their somewhat predictable microcosm of the world if they don't let the chaos in. quiet desperation and all that. FROM: Rafael DATE: Tuesday June 27, 2006 -- 7:09:59 pm We are going on our 4th annual street pot luck. For the past four years every Labor day my neighbor across the street roasts a pig and the rest of the neighbors on our street bring side dishes. We close off the cul-de-sac where I live and we pitch tents set up lawn chairs and try to be neighborly with each other.
