Last week, I had misplaced my MP3 player (I found it on Thursday), but I was annoyed with myself for possibly having lost it. It wasn't super expensive, but it's not the first time I've lost something like that, either.
In college, I misplaced my way-overpriced graphic calculator and never found it. That was a big deal because a.) I was broke and in college and b.) I was taking some math class at the time that required a graphic calculator. I don't think I worried about b.) too much -- I was taking the class pass/fail. Back in 2000, I was at a horror (read: nerd) convention and left my digital camera on a table. I didn't realize until the next morning and by then it was gone. I'm still convinced that the Italian prog rock band performing there took it. Now, that camera today would only cost $25, but there were a bunch of pictures on that card I was bummed to have lost. Have you ever lost anything particularly expensive for an extended period of time, or for good? Comments

Yes. I was in France one summer, in my college years, on one of those "live in the country and absorb the language" things. I took lots of pictures, and was actually the only one to have two great pictures of the group outside of some Paris monuments.
At some point, someone wanted to borrow some film, and I accidentally handed over a used film roll rather than a new one. It had all of those photos. And even after asking to get them back (once I was back and knew I was missing something), the person never quite managed to return them. I still know his name, and still feel faint anger at the situation. Those pictures are lost for good, and are irreplaceable (not quite the same as expensive, but close). Still, the memories remain, which is the important part.

Irreplaceable is worse than expensive. I'm still more pissed about losing the pictures on the card than the camera itself.

Sometime this past year I lost one of the remote keys to my Corolla, I mean Jetta, and I have made no effort to replace it because they cost several hundred $$. It HAS to be in my house unless it leapt into a trashcan. I am hoping to unearth is during Spring cleaning.
I am the Queen of leaving things in hotel rooms, but it's usually just a t shirt or curling iron.

I used to have a terrible habit of leaving stuff behind in hotel rooms. The most expensive thing I ever left behind was a brand new pair of $150 shoes. Hotels are a great place to lose stuff because usually you are in a hurry when you check out. After losing so much stuff that way, I started to make an itemized list of everything I was bringing and would account for everything before I checked out. Since then I haven't lost even a stick of a deoderant. Not something I "lost" but may as well have been: a few years ago I dropped my Treo 600 on the ground, destroying the screen. Amazing how you can lose $500 or so, in a split second. I was kicking myself for months about being so dumb, and then the Treo 650 came out.
I totally understand the comments about pictures. Whenever I travel my memory cards are my #2 possession (behind only my passport). I am careful (anal?) to the point where I always bring a whole bunch of small memory cards instead of a couple big ones and spread a few pictures on each one to minimize the loss in case I do get mugged. Knock on wood, I haven't lost even a shot yet.

I lost my palm pilot. Couldn't find it for the longest time. I was moving my mom's car one day and saw it sitting tucked away in one of the pockets. It doesn't work because the battery is hosed. Oh well

Everybody calls me the responsible and organized girl, except I always happen to lose things, especially at school and when I'm traveling. So far, at school, I've lost 3 sweaters, priced over 40$ each, 2 real 18K gold necklaces, heh, my mom got pretty mad, she vowed never to get me anything real anymore. A ring, 20$, another ring, 10$, a pair of glasses, 200$ (AFTER ONLY ONE YEAR), my textbook 70$ like really, I am absolutely horrible. I get so mad when these type of things happen to me. sigh
