The term “Blog”

Hi.

I’d just like to state that it sends chills up my spine when people use the word “blog” when they mean to say “blog entry” or “post.” As in, “Did you read the blog I wrote yesterday?”

Blog is short for “weblog” and a “log” refers to a collection of entries, not a single entry in the log. When Picard says, “Captain’s log, stardate…” he’s referring to the log as a whole, not just the entry he’s dictating about Wesley and the guy with the funny mountain face.

So, please, let’s limit the term “blog” to the entire entity and use “entry” or “post” when you’re talking about one piece of the blog.

Of course, around here we just say “ping.”

This drives me nuts as well. Sadly, I think we’re doomed to hear this usage for a very long time.

That’s almost as bad as when people say that the Internet was down yesterday, so they couldn’t post their blog.

What is this then?

The Daily Ping is the web's finest compendium of toilet information and Oreo™® research. Too much? Okay, okay, it's a daily opinion column written by two friends. Did we mention we've been doing this for over ten years? Tell me more!
