HD Poll

Sometimes I feel like I’m the last person on the planet that doesn’t have a high definition television, even though I drooled over them as soon as they hit the US market nine(-ish) years ago. And, honestly, I don’t have any plans to upgrade any time soon. Our heavy ol’ CRT is still doing a good job. Sure, it’s not widescreen ratio (which bothers me more than its non-HD resolution), but I have a tough time justifying (to myself) the purchase of a HD set just so I can watch Wife Swap with extra clarity. Truthfully, most of what I watch is old enough that it might actually look worse with the extra detail that HD brings. And for where it does matter, to me, it really just doesn’t.

Similarly, I have no intention of buying a Blu-Ray player anytime soon and when I do, I highly doubt that I’ll be buying more than a very few select titles to own. I’m becoming much less of a tech geek as time goes on. Weird.

Anyone else proudly living in the non-HD world?

I bought a 53″ HDTV 5 years ago. I still haven’t upgraded DirecTV to HD though. Movies and the Xbox look totally bitchin’ on it though.

Honestly, a good sound system is more important to the TV / movie experience to me, and I’ve got that covered.

I have DISH NETWORK with all the HD channels and a 42″ HD PLASMA TV downstairs and a small LCD HD upstairs. also have 7.1 surround sound and its awesome… I have an upconverting DVD player that converts the DVD to almost HD resolution of an HDMI cable and honestly you cant tell the difference. I dont have any plans to get a blu-ray player any time soon….

Non-HD here, too.

I’ve been a little tempted to put in a formal request to upgrade our TV but to be honest what bugs me is all the additional costs. The TV is one thing (and IMHO they’re till too expensive). But then our DirecTV package is SD, not HD. That costs money. All our DVDs are SD. So we would either (ideally) want to upgrade to a Blu-Ray or get an Apple TV for HD rentals. And then… it’s not just the cost of the TV anymore, is it?

Seems like the whole thing is just a way to get people to pay more for what they already have. There are benefits to HD, but… they’re not worth it to me, yet.

Our tube TV is 13 years old, by the way, and still going strong.

I’m with ya. I picked up my 36″ CRT a few years ago for next to nothing. Plus the 32″ CRT in the bedroom is doing fine. I’d have a hard time justifying the cost to buy a new one (plus the extras that Paul mentions above) just to get HD. I have friends with HD and they are nice, but nothing that I feel like I really want.

What is this then?
