Change We Can’t Believe In

One more inauguration Ping. Then I’m done.

You might remember this benediction by Reverend Joseph Lowery:

In response I give you a conversation I overheard on the train to work the morning after that.

Guy: So did you see this reverend, this priest? At the end?
Gal: No.
Guy: He was saying stuff like “black won’t be held back,” “brown won’t be kept down”, “red man get ahead”.
Gal: Huh.
Guy: Then at the end he said, “white must do what’s right.” And I thought, “Why did he have to put that slam in there?”
Gal: Yeah….
Guy: That’s what we have to look forward to for the next four years.

You have no idea how much I wanted to tell this guy to shut the hell up.

White privilege = the right to do wrong without being questioned.

And that’s why that guy was offended. How DARE someone say he must do right!

From the way you describe it, it sounds like the girl wanted to tell him to shut the hell up, too.

What is this then?

The Daily Ping is the web's finest compendium of toilet information and Oreo™® research. Too much? Okay, okay, it's a daily opinion column written by two friends. Did we mention we've been doing this for over ten years? Tell me more!
