I watch way too much Saved by the Bell. In fact, I won't leave the house in the morning until I've watched the 7:30 showing on TBS. What's even more sad is that I edit the Saved by the Bell category for the Open Directory Project. I'm kind of a sucker for SbtB (as us "in the know" call it) and other similar productions (City Guys is quite good, too). So, here is the first in what will most likely be a series of analyses of Zack and crew. One of the most pervasive themes in SbtB is the school dance (or dancing in one capacity or another). Here is each episode (numbered according to The Saved by the Bell Web episode list) that featured the dance theme.
Have I missed any? (if you think this Daily Ping is scary, wait until you see the next SbtB entry!) -ram Comments
FROM: Matt Wright DATE: Friday February 11, 2000 -- 12:41:04AM Any mention of Ox in an episode gets extra points. OH by the way there is a dude here at school named omar that talks just like the main blond-headed nerd in sbtb. But I forgot the nerds name. FROM: Paul DATE: Friday February 11, 2000 -- 9:06:19AM I watched SBTB too, ever since day one in fact. I remember it debuted on an NBC prime time special introducing the new Saturday morning lineup (remember when there were cartoons and kids' shows on Saturday mornings?!) FROM: Ryan DATE: Friday February 11, 2000 -- 9:11:56AM I knew Matt would have something to say on this subject. :) FROM: Aaron DATE: Friday February 11, 2000 -- 1:16:34PM 9.2: "Dancing to the Max" FROM: Aaron DATE: Friday February 11, 2000 -- 1:43:26PM Also, what about the "Battle of the Sexes" during the Tori years? FROM: Ryan DATE: Friday February 11, 2000 -- 2:48:11PM Aaron -- you win the prize for remembering "The Sprain". :) FROM: Aaron DATE: Friday February 11, 2000 -- 4:49:01PM Which one was it where Zack and Slater nearly come to blows? (Kelly's 16th?) They are all at the Max and Zack and Slater each pour punch down each other's shirts. Then Mr. Belding prevents their fighting only to have his new toupee fly off and land in the punch bowl. FROM: Aaron DATE: Friday February 11, 2000 -- 4:52:26PM Ooops, that should be: FROM: Old Fezziwig DATE: Friday February 11, 2000 -- 4:58:03PM Aaron, I'm most impresssed with your SBtB memory given you haven't owned a TV for nearly a year. I would need a daily refresher of shows to come up with that shiznat! Good work young Jedi. FROM: Ryan DATE: Friday February 11, 2000 -- 10:15:57PM The body rock move... holy crap, Aaron, I know exactly what you're talking about. FROM: Aaron DATE: Saturday February 12, 2000 -- 2:01:00AM More memories fight their way out of the back of my brain: FROM: Ryan DATE: Saturday February 12, 2000 -- 2:26:11PM Aaron, FROM: Matt Wright DATE: Sunday February 13, 2000 -- 7:45:16PM Aaron the one where Zack and Slater nearly come to blows is also the same one in which they got into blows in the hallway. They were fighting over the new girl, and they got in a fistfight. They reignited it at the Max, this is where Beldings' toupe gets knocked off. FROM: Ryan DATE: Sunday February 13, 2000 -- 11:02:02PM Matt -- I actually heard a sound file of the infamous hallway fight (which would have made Mick Foley proud) on the web somewhere. FROM: Aaron DATE: Monday February 14, 2000 -- 5:15:57AM Matt, FROM: Ryan DATE: Monday February 14, 2000 -- 10:01:40AM Perhaps we should start a campaign to have the entire series released on DVD? FROM: matt wright DATE: Thursday February 17, 2000 -- 8:09:07PM Ryan that DVD idea is excelent, I would buy a DVD player if all the episodes were put on that format. You may want to pick up a copy of the bullet this week if you get it sent to you, I wrote an article on this stock market contest and started it with a big reference to the episode of SBTB where they invest in stocks. FROM: Ryan DATE: Friday February 18, 2000 -- 12:02:10AM Excellent! I haven't gotten this week's copy of the BULLET yet... will be on the lookout for it. FROM: Aaron DATE: Friday February 18, 2000 -- 3:57:57AM Matt, FROM: Aaron DATE: Friday February 18, 2000 -- 9:20:41AM Oh my gawd... Buddy Bands. Were those not the lamest idea? What were the similar produce that Jesse, Slater, and Screech broke off and made separately? FROM: Ryan DATE: Friday February 18, 2000 -- 2:14:04PM LOL ... FROM: Old Fezziwig DATE: Wednesday February 23, 2000 -- 8:43:26AM My favorite SbtB episode? Hard question! FROM: Ryan DATE: Wednesday February 23, 2000 -- 9:20:01AM OF, all great episodes, for sure! :) But which Bayside Dance (the senior prom, the sweethearts dance, etc.) was your favorite? Which one would you have liked to been grooving to Screech's dope DJ set at the most? FROM: Old Fezziwig DATE: Wednesday February 23, 2000 -- 11:23:04AM Sorry, I misread the question about favorite DANCE episode. Actually, my original answer still qualifies because it involves dancing, although not an official Bayside High School dance. I think if I had to pick a Bayside dance, I'd choose the costume dance where Slater was dressed as an astronaut and Screech was Gumby (I think) and they kissed, thinking each was someone else. Screech was not on the wheels of steel at this shin-dig but it was still a good ep. FROM: Aaron DATE: Wednesday February 23, 2000 -- 3:26:15PM Tough one, there are many contenders. "The Masquerade Ball" is quite funny, and "The New Girl" had us arguing as to whether Tori was really hot or not (Leather jackets no being very form fitting, unlike Kelly's outfits). But, my favorite has to be "Zack and Kelly's Prom". Zack showed his true super-mack skills in overcoming all the obstacles to FROM: Ryan DATE: Wednesday February 23, 2000 -- 11:56:54PM It's a tough call, but the Screech-Slater make-out scene at the Masquerade Ball always makes me laugh... FROM: Aaron DATE: Thursday February 24, 2000 -- 2:30:55AM Ahh, Scott Wolf in the Glee Club. Nice call. FROM: Old Fezziwig DATE: Thursday February 24, 2000 -- 8:40:16AM Aaron, I still to this day do the "SBtB Shrug and Clap". The weird thing is, my sister and other people around me all do the same thing now, although they have no idea where it's from! FROM: Ryan DATE: Thursday February 24, 2000 -- 9:30:56AM I never noticed the "Shrug and Clap" -- I will have to wait until the Ms. Bayside episode (one of the lesser-played ones) comes back around. I've always enjoyed when Slater says something and then does some sort of strange body movement or mumbles something to lead you to believe he's very uncomfortable in his role (example -- remember the episode during the Tori season where there's an earthquake and he has to kick the door in to Mr. Belding's office? Right after the door he does one of his moves -- a "goddamn, I'm cool" type of move...) FROM: Aaron DATE: Thursday February 24, 2000 -- 1:53:20PM Yes! That scene where Slater kicks down the door to free Belding and Screech from Belding's office is classic. More impressive that he can execute such moves in flip-flops and a towel. FROM: Ryan DATE: Thursday February 24, 2000 -- 2:19:11PM LOL -- the shirt pinching and mumbling are definite signs. One of his favorites was, "Alright, then..." but came out sounding like a garbled mess. I believe this was his attempt at ad libbing. :) FROM: Matt DATE: Thursday February 24, 2000 -- 11:51:22PM One of my personal favorite episodes besides the Zack Attack one is the one where they are all at the mall and hide there thru the night. They are trying to get tickets to U2 I think and then they find the money. That is definately a classic, actually every episode is. FROM: Matt DATE: Thursday February 24, 2000 -- 11:54:06PM Oh one more thing, one of my best memories during my junior and senior years of high school my parents and I would eat dinner in front of the tv every weekday so we could catch at least 2 of the 4 episodes of SBTB. I think as a family we caught almost all of them in those two years FROM: Ryan DATE: Friday February 25, 2000 -- 9:30:19AM I know it's me that's drifting from the topic now, but I had to relate one of my favorite SbtB lines from the episode of "The College Years" that was on today: FROM: Robert DATE: Friday February 25, 2000 -- 1:42:07PM Since these were high school kids, they should have done an episode where Zack and AC bring their chicks to an illegal warehouse rave where they face the temptations or E and shrooms. It could be far more true-to-life than that sissy episode with the actor who does anti-pot commercial. FROM: Aaron DATE: Friday February 25, 2000 -- 2:07:39PM > Trivia question -- does anybody remember Slater's real last name from this episode? FROM: Ryan DATE: Friday February 25, 2000 -- 2:20:25PM Rob -- FROM: Matt DATE: Friday February 25, 2000 -- 3:48:06PM Rob SBTB left that rave thing up to 90210 in about the 3rd season. In this particular episode they had to go to a mini-mart and exchange an egg for directions to the rave. What a classic episode. I will openly admit to having seen every 90210 from the first season until last season mid-year. FROM: Aaron DATE: Monday February 28, 2000 -- 11:11:04PM Ryan, FROM: dusty DATE: Wednesday March 1, 2000 -- 12:23:51AM Another old dance episode of sbtb was when Bayside High graduate Stevie the rock star came back to sing her final concert before retiring to go to college. Stevie was going to pick one guy from Bayside to kiss on stage. Zach made a bet that he would be the one and had Lisa fill him in on all the things that Stevie liked. He told her he was dying and that it was his last request to kiss her on stage. It was found that he was lying and Screech was chosen. After being kissed Screech danced and during the whole song Stevie danced. FROM: MC GUSTO DATE: Wednesday March 1, 2000 -- 12:52:23AM Does anyone remember the episode where A.C. Slater, as in Albert Clifford Slater, wore a unitard and did some sort of ballet dance for his beloved girlfriend???? FROM: Ryan DATE: Wednesday March 1, 2000 -- 2:50:44PM Dusty -- the episode with "Stevie" was a classic because the "Stevie" was *so* much more attractive minus her "80's rock star" wig! I believe the song she sang used a telephone as a metaphor for love... FROM: Aaron DATE: Wednesday March 1, 2000 -- 3:02:04PM Gusto, FROM: deirdre DATE: Saturday March 4, 2000 -- 4:38:50PM I am an avid sbtb fan, always have been, always will be. Speaking of dancing, I ask you to recall the "Senior Social" I believe is what is what called, where Lisa wants to go with Darren, that is until she finds out that he's a freshman. Zack and Slater on the otherhand fight over the new girl and actually fight. Also, recall when the gang "with Torrie" dressed up as the "Five Aces" and sang "Come go with me" There was dancing there and Zack got together with Slater's sister. I don't really remember any other dancing episodes, except of course for the dance video that "Hot Sundae" did and thee was the talent show where Jessie dressed as a butterfly, and recited a poem dancing around like a fool. However, Screech was crowned the winner for his magic. FROM: Ryan DATE: Saturday March 4, 2000 -- 8:39:08PM Deirdre -- Wasn't the episode with Lisa and Darren 11.2: "The Aftermath", for Lisa's Sweet 16 party? FROM: Josalyn DATE: Sunday March 5, 2000 -- 2:18:04PM I have a question? What were the word to the song they sang at their graduation....it had soemthing about football games and stuff like that in there. FROM: Jeff DATE: Saturday April 8, 2000 -- 3:04:33AM ok I know you made refrence to the episode where Zach danced with the overweight girl because of the auction, but you forgot to mention the other girl that Zach made feel bad at a dance, The girl in the wheel chair. FROM: Dalton DATE: Saturday April 29, 2000 -- 12:46:25AM The boardgame.. Does someone want to recap that for me? I had it. Didn't remember that I did until today.. FROM: pistol jack DATE: Wednesday May 3, 2000 -- 7:38:19PM wow, what an awesome site. first of all, i'm not sure if this was mentioned, but the episode of "cut-day" had some dancing in it when they were at the beach. you might also remeber that episode as the one where Zach was in the protest with Jessie and her new friend Graham. that is also where Jessie and Slater decided to see other people. FROM: pistol jack DATE: Wednesday May 3, 2000 -- 7:47:21PM just some other things i remembered. there was that one dance where Jessie and Slater first started going out, I also think it might be the first time he called her "mama." also, a classic dance scene is where everyone makes a circle so that Slater and Jessie can bust a move in it. FROM: pistol jack DATE: Wednesday May 3, 2000 -- 11:54:49PM it's me again. i was just reading the post about the "buddy bands" and there was a mistake. slater jessie and kelly split off from zach, lisa and screech. lisa had her friends in home economics class to make their product. lisa got pissed at zach so she left, and of course screech followed her, so that left zach. but then they were all sittling at the max when max convinced them to be friends with zach again. so they made a new product that was like handcuffs. also, the other products from the other kids in the class were the fold-up cadrboard surfboard from the stoner surfers, and the pocket protecter for your pocket protecter from the nerds. FROM: pistol jack DATE: Thursday May 25, 2000 -- 11:24:24AM that was a great episode. The cream was called "zit off" but they were going to change it to "Belldecell" if Mr. Bellding would let Zach sell it at scool. FROM: devon DATE: Sunday May 28, 2000 -- 8:46:48AM one must not look for explanations to bayside's discrepencies. like how they have a different extra-curricular activity in every episode. at one point they're all ballerinas, then they're all actors. then they suddenly play instruments. then they're swimmers. and all the time they act as if they always did these things. or about how, when tori took kellie's place when she went to paris to model, jessie dissapeared also. I'd just like to let you guys know that while i was shopping at a local thrift store looking for funny shirts i found one little gem that was a gray ringer tee with maroon and the front said bayside tigers and the back says SLATER 00 on it. i think this may be a rare, one of a kind shirt. Well worth the 60 cents i paid. I know you don't even know me but aaron and ryan you seem like the funniest people alive, and you seem to share my warped, twisted sense of humor. i am willing to bet you are also fans of the mullet. FROM: Ryan DATE: Saturday August 19, 2000 -- 4:51:38PM Good to have you here, Lyndsay. :) That's incredible you found a 00 Slater shirt... I'd wear one every day if I had one. :) FROM: Ashley DATE: Wednesday August 23, 2000 -- 8:44:38PM You forgot a dancing episode. The one where Zack almost cant graduate beacause hes missing a credit so he gets into the performance of "Swan Pond" theres alot of dancing in that. its weird i havent even watched the show from the beginning and i know that. I'm omly 14! FROM: Ryan DATE: Wednesday August 23, 2000 -- 10:09:52PM Actually, Ashley, Mark beat you to the punch back on April 4th... I just never made the correction to the original Ping. Guess I'll have to do that. :) FROM: CHRIS DATE: Sunday August 27, 2000 -- 7:55:56PM WHAT EVER HAPPENED AFTER THE EPISODE WHERE LISA AND ZACK GET TOGETHER? THAT WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITES BUT NOTHING MORE EVER CAME OF IT? EMAIL ME ...I LOVE THAT SHOW! FROM: Ryan DATE: Sunday August 27, 2000 -- 9:11:43PM Chris -- IIRC, Zack and Lisa decided it was best to break it off... mainly because it was causing a rift between Zack and Screech (since they were friends but Screech had the major crush on Lisa). FROM: Maria DATE: Monday August 28, 2000 -- 1:12:08AM Actually, the Zack/Lisa relationship didn't end, per se, in that episode. Zack intended to break it off because it was causing a rift between him and Screech and Screech wanted to fight Zack for stealing Lisa. (I think this episode involved Screech ripping Zack's shirt open in the hall. I may have confused that, however, with the fight between Zack and Slater. Either way, that part was particularly lame, in my opinion.) FROM: Ryan DATE: Monday August 28, 2000 -- 1:14:24AM Good call, Maria. I should have just let you field that question in the first place. :) FROM: Jason DATE: Wednesday August 30, 2000 -- 10:32:32PM The school song was an awesome episode, that was a pretty clever song they put together at the end of the episode. Zack and Slater were awesome in this episode FROM: Jason DATE: Wednesday August 30, 2000 -- 10:48:32PM Who do you guys think is the best saved by the bell episode. Zack is cool but Slater is the only one who never says a dorky line. Lisa had designed outfits for a runway show to get accepted into the Fashion Institute of Technology (I may be mistaken), and Screech saw Zack and Lisa kissing. Screech was to be the runway announcer, but he was so upset with Lisa and Zack that he replaced what was written on the index cards with his own angry words. I think Zack was wearing a beige pair of suede pants. Good episode. FROM: Ryan DATE: Wednesday September 6, 2000 -- 4:09:23PM Ran across this comment on Dan's blog. He pointed to funny link. FROM: Charlie DATE: Thursday September 7, 2000 -- 8:53:47PM Uh, Jason, you think Slater never says a dorky line? Do you remember the Driver's Ed. episode? Don't you remember when he tells Mr. Belding, "I was in the seat, I'll take the heat." I thought that was pretty dorky, but hey, that's why I love this show! When I was a sophomore in college, one of my neighbors in the dorm worked with Mr. Dewey's sister. I believe Mr Dewey taught math and drivers ed on SBTB. My RA and I were both huge fans of the show, so when it came time to have Hawthorne Hall's yearly Pig Roast (hmmm, can you tell I went to school in rural Wisconsin?) we wrote a fan letter to Mr. Dewey and asked him to be our guest of honor. Sadly, he never responded. |
