Obsessive Planner or Spontaneous Traveller?

Are you the type of person that prefers to have six months to plan out a trip, do all sorts of crazy research about your destination, obsessively check airline prices, and generally get psyched about the trip? Or do you prefer a last minute trip that catches you by surprise and forces you to work quickly to find travel deals and fly by the seat of your pants once you get there?

I’m definitely more of an obsessive travel planner than a spontaneous traveller. While I don’t like to plan my days down to the minute, I do like to find out every possible thing there is to do and decide what things I’d like to spend my time doing while I’m there. And I love the time leading up to a trip where I’m getting progressively more excited about travelling.

I bring this up because I have a trip coming up in a couple weeks that is of the first type, one that I’ve been planning for months now. At the same time, I have a possible trip in a month that would entail a trip overseas to a destination I know nothing about, so I may be forced to become a spontaneous traveller for the first time in my life.

Personally, I like spontaneous travel, but that really isn't practical with kids, and a wife that prefers meticulously planned trips. So, last year when we went to Disney, I had a spreadsheet showing which parks we were at each day, where we were eating each day, etc.

A trip overseas? Are you going to Bangkok?!

My dad was the spreadsheet guy when we went to Disney World. Unfortunately, I don't remember the trips, but I do remember the annoyance of all the planning. Things like that (and leaving eons early to get to places, being woken up to take advantage of free breakfasts, etc) has definitely affected how I don't do things!
I don't like meticulous planning. Worse, my boyfriend likes planning even less, and since we're going on a big trip out of the country later this summer, I've had to do all the planning (so far). Right now we have plane tickets and hotel reservations for one of the 2 weeks... the rest'll probably be spontaneous. Yay!

I'm usually the very planned out traveller, complete with maps, directions, reservation info, etc. I'm going on a vacation in mid October, and have a full folder devoted just to the vacation.

On the other hand, I am pretty good at spur-of-the-moment travel, too. Sporatic travel can be fun, IF it's for a personal vacation. Sporatic work travel can be quite a bit stressful. That whole "when do I have to be there?" atmosphere is a bit stressful.

More often than not, spontaneous traveler. If someone else plans it, I'll certainly go along, but if left to me, I usually don't do much planning. To wit, last year I went on a 12 day trip through Europe with ~36 hours between deciding to go and flight departure.

Aaron, you are definition of "spontaneous traveller." I've lost track the number of times I've gotten an e-mail from you that says, "By the way, I'm in _____ now." :)

Ha ha, or how about a midnight phone call, "Ryan, I'm at Dulles and I missed my connection to Amsterdam, can I crash at your pad?"
