TV Show of the Day: Just the Ten of Us

Do you remember this show? Sure you do! It all started when Growing Pains – the highly-successful ABC sitcom of the 80s – needed a spinoff to, er, extend its success. Coincidentally, there was a character at the high school the Seaver kids attended named Coach Lubbock. Add in a backstory (he’s married with seven kids and one on the way) and, bammo! It’s a spinoff.

The whole thing was the usual 80s cheeseball but, man, I still like it. I wish I could watch it now. I remember the big old house they bought very, very far from Growing Pains’ locale (original, that!) along with the entire intro. I even typed out the song with my pal Liz on AIM one night. It’s scary when you remember a show so well; it’s even scarier when you remember the theme song to a show so well. – pm

That show always made me sad. I guess it was a combination the fact that I was home alone on a Friday night, and all the the adversity that a family of ten must throw at the parents. Bill Kirchenbauer (I think that's his last name) wasn't a bad stand-up comic, either.

-Born To Be Wild
- The Ballad of Sweeny Todd
- Dancin' In the Street
- Rock Around The Clock
-Twist and Shout

I'm looking for any songs not listed above, but in particular the Ballad that Cindy sings the night of their debut and the piece they were singing when Rick Potter died during their encore. Please email me the song title and the original artist, Thank You.

If you REALLY REALLY want to request for "Growing Pains" to be on air on any tv channels, all we need to either email or call TV Land or any channel you prefer, and DEMAND that all of us want to watch "Growing Pains". And ALSO ask them WHEN they will release the DVD in "Growing Pains". So, they really need our attention, and they NEED to know what we WANT from them. I hope it works!!!! Please let me know how it goes!

i loved the show, too! i've seen every episode, and i still have some of the ones i taped. i'm a fan of heather langenkamp's (marie), and that first drew me to the show, but i'll have to admit, the show was just what it was... good, fun entertainment. i also used to love watching the lubbock babes perform. i think "do you wanna make something of it" was probably my favorite song they did. by the way, did all you JTTOU fans out there know that 3 out of the 4 babes starred in a freddy krueger movie? that's right, of course, heather langenkamp was nancy, but brooke theiss (wendy) played debbie the "cockroach" girl in the fourth installment, and joanne willette (connie) played one of the girls on the back of the bus terrorized by freddy in the opening sequence of the second installment...just thought i'd let you know. :-)

My husband said it was probably because it mad some Catholics mad. I guess I can see it would but, hey! we all have "baggage".
Thanks for listening.

We made a chubby guy in our class be the dad. We would even act out the singing parts at my house. Ok I am sure you all think I am crazy but I was only 10. JAMIE LUNER!!!! I has such a mad crush on her. I taped every episode ( back in the 80's) One night my cable went out & I needed to have all the episodes on tape, so I took my old tv ( rabbit ears TV) placed my camcorder infront of the screen to tape the episode. SAD BUT TRUE. Also if they ever do a movie on the life of the WWF McMahons Jamie Luner has to play Stephanie.

I lost my tapes and am so upset about it! What I would do to kick back and and enjoy the show all over again, it would bring back so many memories! Reading these comments has been a real kick. I co-created Just the Ten of Us and I'm amazed that so many people remember it fondly. We were canceled while we were a ratings winner. But ABC could only say, "We just don't like it so we're canceling it." I think someone is selling episode collections on e-bay now. Who knew? Thanks, all of you.

Doin' It the Best I Can

Life is a race and I know I can win it,
'Cause I'm learnin' the rules of the game.
If I can stay on the ball, take it minute by minute,
I just might make the hall of fame.
What can I say?
I'm doin' it the best I can,
Leanin' on nobody but me.
Oh, seein' it from where I stand,
Nothin' comes easy.
(Nothin' comes easy.)
Oh, I'm always bringin' home second places,
At the end of every one of my days,
To a house filled with all of their faces,
That keeps me doin' it the best I can.
Yeah, I'm doin' it the best I can.
I'll keep on doin' it the best I can.
(Ooo, ooo, ooo, ooo, ooo, ooo.)

I really loved this show also. Its such a shame that it was canceled; its even more of a shame that those of us who are admirers of the show can't get copies of it. In an age where we are releasing DVD's of a TV show that didn't even make it through one season ( i refer here to the release of My Big Fat Greek Life on DVD), its frustrating that a show that lasted two great seasons might never see a release date. I have every episode on VHS tapes, but the quality is so poor that it gives me a headache to watch most of it. Is there any way to touch-up VHS tapes so I could possibly salvage this precious viewing material? If anyone has good copies of this show, I'd be interested in buying!

FROM: Jason

I'm so glad a number of people loved this show as much as I did. It goes down as one of my two or three favorite shows of all time.

I have all episodes on tape and counted only 45 instead of 47 (where am I missing the other two?).

Also, I have a major, major problem with those who say J10 was insulting to Catholics, or stereotypical, or other nonsense like that.

You want to read something strange? The show has been off the air for 14 years (a huge loss to us all), and I have been able to watch only one network series since then: the first 3 seasons of "Frasier." Why? Because everything else totally sucked!!

My apologies if this is rambling, but there is just so much to say. As with one of the e-mailers above, Marie was my favorite Lubbock daughter.

As for you, Steve Marshall -- THANK YOU for co-creating a show I really looked forward to each week. Do you, by chance, have a color photo of the cast? Bill Kirchenbauer and Deborah Harmon were top-notch in their roles.

One e-mailer on a totally different site wrote "Just the Ten of Us was crap from the very beginning..." I say, screw those people! They didn't seem to have a problem with other sitcoms that were spinoffs; why are they ragging on J10?

The episode with Matthew Perry (called "The Dinner Test") is perhaps my favorite. Regrettably, there is one episode I absolutely refuse to watch: "The Voice of God." It seemed to me that, in the episode, Eureka's citizens were making fun of Elizabeth's speaking with God.

If anyone wishes to share their favorite J10 memories with me, please feel free to e-mail me at Thanks!!

I used to love this show too! I was in the 5th and 6th grades when it was airing and it was my favorite. I used to watch the USA network reruns too. I remember when it used to be on that a lot of holy roller parents were upset with the sometimes raunchy jokes and the skimpy clothes that the daughters would wear, and I think that might have been one reason they cancelled it (it was on ABC after all). the words to “still got your fire” from what i can make out on a casette i tape

when we first meet it felt just like forever,
you where the spark and i was the flame,
i couln’t keep our tensions from raising,
just wisper in your head.

Now we both know what god can do to lovers,
the sparkling rage, and then i await.

But in my heart felt average of a lover,
my love burns brighter for you every day.

Still got your fire, still got your heat.
give me your love from my head to my feet,
still want your touch, give me a kiss,
you know this time won’t always be like this.

Don’t be affraid where never gonna burn out.

Just hold me close and i guarantee

Your gonna love the way it’s gonna turn out

I”ll make you fell as hot as love can be

Still got your fire, still got your heat.
Give me your love from my head to my feet.
still want your touch, give me a kiss.
You know this time won’t always be like this.

Love you more than you’ll ever know, in a way
i’ll never let you go.

Still got your fire, still got your heat.
Give me your love from my head to my feet,
Still want your touch, give me a kiss.
You know this time won’t always be like this.
Still got your fire.
