Battling Headaches

I don’t know what it is, but I’ve been getting an awful lot of headaches recently. Maybe it’s allergies, maybe it’s sitting in front of a computer screen all day, maybe I need to go see the eye doctor. I used to have migranes when I was in high school, and increasing my intake of protein a bit in the mornings with yogurt or peanut butter seemed to help then. These headaches aren’t as bad, but they’re starting to annoy me, and I’m looking for non-pill ways to fight these headaches as much as possible. I’m trying only to resort to Advil or aspirin when nothing else works.

The best thing, I’ve found, is a nap in a quiet room with a cold washcloth over my eyes. Unfortunately, this isn’t very reasonable if I’m at work or out and about. So, perhaps some of you might be able to offer suggests on fighting these minor annoyances. -ram

I've had two headaches in my life that I can recall. One was in 6th grade, and the other was at some point in high-school. Maybe you need to stay off of the tea, and eat more cheese-itz

Ryan,
Water. Lots of slightly cooler than room temp water. I find 8-10 glasses is hard (usually damn near impossible) unless I drink one when I wake up in the morning and another before leaving for work.

There are herbal remedies... there's this product called "Peace and Calming" which is rubbed on the forehead and is supposed to get rid of headaches.

Matt -- Actually, tea helps the headaches (as long as it's decaffeinated). :)

Patrick -- I also drink lots of water... I drink 64 ounces a day, just while at work.

OF -- I'm always a bit skeptical of that stuff... have you tried it?

I think some people are just more prone to headaches than others... it's odd, though, because I went through a couple-year stretch where I had almost no headaches. Of course, at the time I also had a fair amount of stomach problems, which are all gone now.

Whacking my kneecap on the corner of my desk does it for me.

Seriously tho--I'd take quickie breaks from staring at your computer screen. I also change the lighting for a while (I have my own office--if you're in a cube farm you're stuck).

Matt -- Oh, I know, don't worry. :) Your sarcasm is never lost on me! But, in actuality, heavily caffienated tea (like some of the stronger black teas) could cause problems for some people. Fortunately, I drink mainly greens and whites, and the caffiene content is much lower. Now if you're excuse, I'm going to get a multi-color hi-top fade and to buy a polka-dotted shirt.

Cat -- I think the breaks are a good answer. Fortunately, I have my own office with a window, so that helps. And recently, I've cut the florescent lighting off altogether, just working with the natural light. I do think I need a new monitor, though -- the contrast on this thing is awful.
