Finally… Indians on TV

Perhaps spawned by the success of Bend It Like Beckham, we now have what I believe to be the first mainstream commercial featuring Indian-Americans, thanks to Volkswagen. It’s a relatively new one (it’s not yet featured on VW’s page of TV ads), but it’s a welcome one in a world where car commercials generally suck. My first reaction was, “Wow… Indians in a commercial? It’s about time…” And only then did I realize that for a country that represents so many types of people how incredibly one-sided commercials still are. Can you name the last commercial you saw that featured an Indian family? Or a Middle Eastern family? Or any family with an accent?

Kudos to VW for taking this step. Let’s hope others will follow in bringing some diversity to the advertising landscape.

I applaud this. While not an Indian, I live in an area that has a higher Indian population than the rest of the country (from what I understand, we house the main Sikh temple on the west coast).

At any rate, I've noticed an increase of visibility of Indians as well, starting with Bend it Like Beckham, but also with the girl from that movie being cast in ER. Then there's Matrix Revolutions, which features an Indian family for a lengthly scene.

What's interesting to me is that while there's such a big deal made over hispanics being represented on TV and movies, there's not much talk about Indians. They represent a huge population!

In 2000 the Census counted 1,678,765 Indians living in the U.S. out of a total population of 281,421,906. (0.6%) Definitely enough to be part of our culture landscape, but not enough to get Indian-themed TV shows like they have in the UK.

Maybe corporations are trying to get the rest of America to be more comfortable with the fact that we're exporting thousands of jobs to India...
