Getting Back in the Swing

When you return from a vacation, say a three-day vacation after a two-day weekend where you didn’t think about work a single time, how long does it take you to get back into the swing of your normal everyday routine? Some people seem to be able to do it right away, but I certainly have an adjustment period. Usually the first morning back is extremely hectic, playing catch-up on important e-mails or requests that have come in during the time off. It’s a stressful period since it’s hard to be mentally ready to really handle the workload that hits you in those first few hours back.

Then, by the afternoon, I find myself thinking, “Yesterday at this time I was…” and wishing I was doing it again. That afternoon is hard to make it through.

So, I’d say it takes one day for me to really be back in the swing of things, settled back into my daily routine.

Yeah, I guess it takes me maybe 2 days before my body is back in the swing work. My mind is another matter... depends on how good the vacation was as to whether I keep thinking about it or not.

I like to exercise when I'm on vacation. I'm not a lay arounder. The activity stimulates me and makes me feel reinvigorated for work. My biggest complaint about work is that I'm sedentary all the time, chained to a desk. The last thing I want on vacation is to laze around. If I get enough exercise, which reduces a lot of stress, I'm rip roaring ready to go well before vacation is over.

If I ever took a long vacation, maybe the story would change. I actually don't like short vacations that require a lot of driving or flying. I try to generally stay within three hours distance by car or or five hours by airplane, or else I tire and come back to work exhausted.

Keeping travel time to a minimum is key. Once they develop that scram jet airliner, so I can fly from NY to Paris is a half hour, I'm going to Europe!
