Why Do CD Companies Hate Us?

Egads. Just… egads.

I can’t imagine a situation where I bought a CD and it failed to function as a friggin’ CD. I know Ryan had issues with a CD recently that made him jump through a hoop or two in order to just listen to music. But what gets my goat is that there’s no one out there, that I know of, championing music lovers and saying, you know, this all sucks.

I think if a Presidential candidate or even a candidate for Senator would be up for my listening rights, that person would get my vote. But no one seems to care, so we have to deal with silly DRM. Whadda waste.

You've read about the Sony DRM, no?

Just in case: http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2005/10/sony-rootkits-and-digital-rights.html.

A bit over my head, and I hex-edit things regularly. But basically Sony is subjugating your machine and if you try to stop them, your machine breaks.

Intellectual property is going to be a big battle for a number of years, since there has been a standard for a long time. Those who want DRM are in positions of power. But IP is trivial to copy these days. If I were to release some software or music or whatever, I don't know that I would try to copy-protect it, since it is futile.

Sucks to produce something and just have people copy it, but maybe fixing societal morals and expectations is a better idea than legislation and malware.

What is this then?

The Daily Ping is the web's finest compendium of toilet information and Oreo™® research. Too much? Okay, okay, it's a daily opinion column written by two friends. Did we mention we've been doing this for over ten years? Tell me more!
