Women make wilk, big whop!

August 21st, 2006

I just recently obtained my first pair of sunglasses. Even though I’ve worn glasses since eighth grade, I’ve never owned a pair of sunglasses. I was perfectly happy squinting.

But when I got my expensive new pair of quin-focals, I decided to pay even more and get a pair with snap-on sunglasses. With a drive directly into the morning sun, I don’t know how the heck I’ve done so long without them. I still don’t wear them when I’m walking around, but they’ve been a lifesaver for driving.

Plus, it was the last piece of the puzzle. Now I look exactly like Blade.

I have the worst luck with losing/breaking sunglasses. That is, expensive sunglasses. If I find a pair of $10 sunglasses on the rack at the drugstore, I'll hang on to them for years and years. Give me money for a pair of expensive sunglasses, and I'll show you sunglasses that will be broken or lost in about 5 hours.

True story: Back in '03, I was going on vacation to Orlando. My job had given me $75 in gift certificates to the local mall, so I took them, and got myself an extremely nice pair of Ray-Ban glasses. I've never really had nice glasses at that point.

2 days later: Go to the airport, fly down. Later that day, I'm walking around Universal's Citywalk near the NBA cafe when BAM!..I'm struck in the face with a basketball. Someone was playing the pop-a-shot basketball, and it came flying back off the rim...right into my new sunglasses, which were completely shattered and unsalvagable in any way.

I'm jinxed, I tell ya.

I've lost approximately 850 pairs of sunglasses in my short lifetime.

I currently have none but need some, for sure. Like Dave though, I won't pay more than a small amount on sunglasses since I'm prone to lose them.

When I was in college I had a pair of sunglasses that were several years old. I had bought them from a guy on a street corner in Honolulu for a couple of bucks. One of my college buddies tells me they are Vaurnet, and proceeds to prove it to me by showing where somebody filed off the "made in France" logo, and by bending them all the way around backwards without breaking.

Not kidding - I lost them within the week. Had he not told me they were really trendy expensive shades, I'd probably still have them.

Get out--you've been squinting all these years? Oh my.

I even wear my shades in the rain. The haze hurts my eyes.

Mine are prescription and I have never lost them largely because I am as attached to them as my cell phone. I'd be horrifyingly lost without them.

Before getting Lasik a couple of years ago, I never owned a pair of sunglasses. Last year I went to Thailand, and bought a whole bunch of counterfeit Ray-Bans and Oakleys on the street for about $2 each and indistinguishable from the real thing (at least to someone who has never owned the real thing). The supply will last me a lifetime. The nice thing about the word sunglasses is has built in plural, so when you write "sunglasses - $40" on your customs declaration form they just assume it's one pair and wave you on. Suckers!!

What is this then?
