A confession

I have never sent a text message in my life. Not once.

Oh, sure, I’ve sent plenty of IMs, tens of thousands of e-mails, and sat in chat rooms even 20 years ago, but I’ve never once sent a text message on a cell phone. Not even to vote for American Idol.

Do you think it could because I hate using the phone? Nah, that couldn’t be it…

Normally I have little use for text messages. It seems like something for “the kids” and I don’t quite get the appeal. But when I was recovering from having my tonsils out, texting was a lifesaver! I couldn’t talk much on the phone and was home alone for about 10 hours a day, so it was the only way I could have meaningful communication with anyone that wasn’t in the room.

I’ve used it for Google’s handy dandy service (send a message to GOOGL – like “restaurants 90210” – and get results.) But that’s mostly it.

Until this past Friday, I had not sent one either! My arrival to Santa Fe was delayed and the person picking me up cannot hear on a phone, so I taught myself very quickly.

It prompted me to also teach my dad how to read one on his phone (sending one is out of the question!) because he too is hearing impaired.

I don’t approve of the abbreviations though. I will not abbrev.

I’ve sent about 10, and all of those were on my trip to Purdue last fall when the friend that I was picking up at the airport was texting me updates on his flight arrival. One thing I noticed on that trip that was really odd. At any given time, about 25% of the kids in the bars were texting somebody. I couldn’t quite grasp the appeal of crowding into a over packed smoke filled bar so you could text with somebody that is somewhere else. Those crazy college kids…

What is this then?
