The Sedlec Ossuary

The SedlecOssuary is a chapel decorated inside with scuptures made from human skulls and bones. Apparently, there is a high demand to be buried on this holy ground, so to make room for new residents, they dig up previous residents and use their bones in the inside of the church (so that they remain on holy ground as well).

It’s absolutely amazing — the chandelieris especially impressive. -ram

That's an image fit for a Cannibal Corpse cover.

I went to the ossuary last month and must say, it's a creepy place. 40,000 bones arranged in the most fascinating patterns! I highly recommend people go and check this place out if they're in Bohemia. To make art out of death is certainly nothing new, but within the setting of this little gothic chapel basement... just stunning.
I found a good site with 60 high-quality pictures of the display and the church from the outside. It's at

Actually, the whole site is cool for armchair travelers who want to see a ton of pictures and read stories of other travelers.

Good stuff!
