Christmas Away from Home

After 25 years, this was the first Christmas I spent away from my family. It’s kind of a strange feeling not to be at the Christmas Eve Wigilia (a Polish tradition that involves lots of strange fish and the ever-tasty Oplatek). But I went to midnight mass (a 2 1/2 hour service — way long on those hard wooden benches) and will spend Christmas Day with my fiancee and her mother and sister. My family will join us here in a few days.

Anyone else away from their families over the holiday? Or just away from the Ping? 🙂 -ram

You'll be happy to know I'm in my usual place.

I've spent Christmas away from my family ever since I moved here to Virginia, so this year's no new thing. My butt was on a nice soft couch at midnight. It was thinking of you.

this was likely the last Christmas with my folks for a while...but they seem to be taking it in stride!

What the hell is Oplatek? Sounds like a failed dot-com.

Dave -- Oplatek is like eating thin cardboard... :) Imagine a communion wafer, but with less taste. Everyone gets a piece of Oplatek and then goes around to everyone else at the gathering and breaks a piece off for them (a literal "breaking of the bread," I guess). It's a neat tradition, but the stuff itself is pretty foul. :)

This was the first year for me to be out of the house, but I returned to my mom's place for the holidays. And boy, sleeping in my old bed, in my nearly-empty old room was just WEIRD. It was a fine dinner and great to see everyone again, but it was a strange mix of nostalgia and paranoia, being back so soon.

Also: I have no idea how I slept on a twin bed for nearly all of my life.

Oops...Sorry about that. What I was going to say, is this is the first time my parents have visited my humble abode instead of me going to their home for Christmas. It is nice, but I think I'll fly to their house next year.
