David Lee Roth

Today is David Lee Roth’s birthday.

David Lee Roth was born in Bloomington, Indiana, on October 10, 1954. In the 1970s, “Diamond” Dave moved to California and hooked up with a band called Mammoth – which later became known as Van Halen to avoid confusion with another band called Mammoth.

As the 1980s progressed, Roth’s visage became all too familiar to MTV viewers, as they watched him swing on strings in the video for “Panama”. He also did what the title suggested in “Jump”, and taught us that school could be a whole lot of fun in “Hot for Teacher”.

A number of years later, however, Dave parted ways with Van Halen. While that group faded into obscurity, David Lee Roth’s huge impact on the musical world was felt as he issued solo album after solo album, with hit after hit. No one could forget such great works as Eat ‘Em and Smile and Your Filthy Little Mouth – the latter garnering a two star review in Spin magazine.

Indeed, then, when talk of a VH reunion with Dave surfaced a few years ago, the music world was set ablaze. Dave! The mammoth (no pun intended) solo artist, with a formidable career, helping his old bandmates recover from a long line of lackluster lead libidos? Could it be? Alas, Dave was just kidding, as the promised reunion never materialized.

We salute you, David Lee Roth, on your birthday, and wish you all the best. – pm

Actually, Van Halen had a couple more huge albums and several hit songs AFTER David Lee Roth (with his replacement, Sammy Hagar); if anyone "faded into obscurity", it was David Lee Roth (granted, after his two successful novelty solo singles in 1985).

They only flirted with taking him back when Sammy Hagar left, and indeed recorded a couple new songs with him for their greatest hits album. However, when they made their first public appearance together on an awards program upon the album's release, DLR acted like an a-hole, and was promptly booted from the band.

It was at this point that Van Halen took a third lead singer (they guy from the band Extreme, I think), THEN "faded into obscurity" in the mid-1990's.

It was my pleasure to correct your mistake about who faded first.

Um, upon re-reading this topic, I now think you might have been kidding all along... right? Sorry.

Smooth move, ExLax!

David Lee Roth also walks with such rock giants as Frank Zappa and John Lydon for employing Steve Vai, one of the world's greatest guitar wank artists.

Dave made history by creating the rock frontman. Charisma and showmanship. Dave has continued to take the music on the road to the fans, as the other unspoken heros are definitely faded somewhere into obscurity. Dave only wanted to continue to play small venues for the fans, back in '86, when the VH guys had gotten so big-headed and only wanted to play 4 big (large arena) venues a year only, like the Stones, the Who, etc. do now. Dave has maintained his respect to anyone that knows anything about music, showmanship, innovation and creativity, etc.

Hell Yeah! The Daily Ping knows what it's all about!

Van Halen ended when Roth left and turned into some crap ass band called Van Hagar.

Of course, Dave's post VH career was actually GOOD compared to Van Hagar, who really really sucked.

Oh, and P who? Penis Diddler? Who the hell is that? He's NOTHING compared to The Diamond One.
