David Lee Roth

Today is David Lee Roth’s birthday.

David Lee Roth was born in Bloomington, Indiana, on October 10, 1954. In the 1970s, “Diamond” Dave moved to California and hooked up with a band called Mammoth – which later became known as Van Halen to avoid confusion with another band called Mammoth.

As the 1980s progressed, Roth’s visage became all too familiar to MTV viewers, as they watched him swing on strings in the video for “Panama”. He also did what the title suggested in “Jump”, and taught us that school could be a whole lot of fun in “Hot for Teacher”.

A number of years later, however, Dave parted ways with Van Halen. While that group faded into obscurity, David Lee Roth’s huge impact on the musical world was felt as he issued solo album after solo album, with hit after hit. No one could forget such great works as Eat ‘Em and Smile and Your Filthy Little Mouth – the latter garnering a two star review in Spin magazine.

Indeed, then, when talk of a VH reunion with Dave surfaced a few years ago, the music world was set ablaze. Dave! The mammoth (no pun intended) solo artist, with a formidable career, helping his old bandmates recover from a long line of lackluster lead libidos? Could it be? Alas, Dave was just kidding, as the promised reunion never materialized.

We salute you, David Lee Roth, on your birthday, and wish you all the best. – pm
