Wrong Number Etiquette

When you dial a wrong number, Pingers, what do you do? I suspect it’s something a little like this:

Oh, I’m sorry, I must’ve dialed the wrong number.

Seems simple enough. But I’ve found lately that people dialing wrong numbers have gotten rather snippy – as have people fielding them. A few weeks ago I received a wrong number call and the fellow asked me thrice if he called my number. Each time I confirmed. Each time he paused, and then asked again. He never apologized.

I can tolerate the three-times asking. But no apology? That’s just rude, man. Equally rude? The hang-up in response to a wrong number. Go on, apologize!

Even the phone book tells you that you shouldn't hang up if you dial a wrong number because it can be reported as a harassing phone call.

And the phone book is the Bible of phone etiquette.

Commandment #3 - Thou shall appologize when thou dialed a wrong number.

I personally love it when I get a wrong number in a different language.

I actually hang up when I dial a wrong number. I know I shouldn't and I know it's wrong, but I completely freak out when I do it. I can't help it!

Though I prefer to go into a tirade about how the person should apologize to me for not being the person I'm trying to reach, I usually end up giving a simple, "Sorry 'bout that" and move on.

Hang ups suck. Rob hangs up. Therefore, Rob, you suck.

I can't remember the last time I dialed a wrong number. I usually only call a few people and make sure that I have the right number. Maybe when I get some bigwig job where I have to call strangers, it will happen more often.

Yes, I suck. But we knew this already.

I get a phone call at work today. I answer and the person knew they got the wrong number. I asked who they were trying to reach and the voice responded "Taco Bell". Why call a Taco Bell? Does the voice need to know what time they open so he could be the first to try the new chalupa?

Maybe it's just me, but after calling a wrong number, is anyone else afraid to call that person because they're paranoid that they'll get the -same- irate person as last time?

What is this then?
