The Virtual DJ

We all love our iPod/Nomad/etc., but I have an for a feature that could enhance any of them: a “virtual DJ” option.

With this option turned on, at the beginning of each song, the MP3 player would drop the volume of the music slightly and announce the artist name, the song title, and the album title for the song that’s starting to play. Yesterday when I was driving while listening to my Nomad on “shuffle” a bunch of songs I didn’t recognize came on and I had to take my eyes off of the road to look down on the display to see what they were. With a “virtual DJ” option, I would have been good to go.

And maybe they could offer a Casey Kasem voice…

Negativland gave us all the Casey Kasem voice I'll ever need.

Good in concept, but trust me, we'd all get sick of the voice doing the voiceover, just as we all get sick of radio DJ's.

Ryan -- Do you have that many MP3's that you don't even recognize the songs without looking? Just curious..I've never heard of that as a problem..then again, with several Gigs of room on a player (How many are on a Nomad? 20Gb?), I can see that possibly happening if you put a full album on there, and one of the B-side tracks came up.

How does one get B-sides on a digital format? :-)

I think Ryan's idea is a great one. Combine it with voice recognition (or, "The Technology That Has Been Promised For Decades But Won't Be Here Until 2031") and it's perfect.

"Next up: 'Hey Baby' by Gwen Stefani and No Doubt!"

"Bad iPod! Bad!"

"Okay! Playing 'Brandy' by Looking Glass, boss!"

Dave -- My Nomad has about 5000 songs on there right now... there are 1000 reggae songs, many of which are downloaded rips of old out-of-print 7" singles that I'd never heard before... so I found myself hearing a lot of songs for the first time and glancing down to see what they were...

I wouldn't want it on all the time, but it would be a nice option to have.
