Funny Bands

For as long as there’s been music, there’ve been funny singers and bands. When I think of humorous music, for example, “Weird Al” Yankovic always comes to mind. But I also think of the funny bands of the 90s and early 00s: those that were one-hit wonders, or those with long careers who happened to get some radio play.

For example:

  • Ween. This duo got popular with the annoying-as-hell yet sometimes funny-as-hell “Push the Little Daisies.” (You remember it! C’mon!) They’re still at it, and most of their stuff seems to be wildly hit-or-miss.
  • Barenaked Ladies. BNL, as “insiders” call them, have been around for quite some time but hit it big with wacky songs like “Brian Wilson” and “If I Had $1,000,000.” Undoubtedly their staying power was measured by the inclusion of “One Week” in a Mitsubishi commercial.
  • Bloodhound Gang. Three words: “The Bad Touch.”

Got any others?

How about the Housemartins? Ok, I crossed the line back into the 80s, but BNL sound a whole lot like them; in fact, people used to wonder if they had a common vocalist. (no) You can't listen to Happy Hour without being happy. And how about Madness? They had many quirky cool tunes other than "Our House."

How about Camper Van Beethoven? Have I lost all of you?

Dude, Ween's been at the top of their game since they started. They had funny songs even when you couldn't understand the lyrics (e.g. "Doctor Rock").

Don't forget the highest profile funny band working today: Tenacious D.

More just keep coming to me . . .

Everyone should check out Sparks. They're still around, but their biggest, best output was in the late 70s/early 80s.

Negativland: Very political, very scary, and very funny.

Trans Am has some funny moments, too.

Barry Louis Polisar! Jonathan and I LOVED his very very silly records when we were little. The songs are still funny now (but I still have a lot of the same sense of humor I did then...)

Didn't one of the guys from the Housemartins form the Beautiful South? They also do funny songs...

Tina, no. Rob, yes! Beautiful South certainly recorded some quirky songs in the early 90s.

Wesley Willis was horribly exploited and made the butt of jokes throughout his career, but at least he was happy and got to travel.

Don't forget King Missile [originally King Missile (dog fly religion)]! _Mystical Shit_ is not to be missed, and includes "Cheesecake Truck" and "Jesus Was Way Cool."

On a related note. _The Nutley Brass Plays the Greatest Hits of Shimmy-Disc!_ is the best parody (or actual re-rendition) of indie pop into lounge music I've ever heard.

Lastly, since I just had a lot of fun searching Daily Ping for "toilet," those loving endless (actually humorous) defecation and bodily fluid songs should immediately find any MOTO (Masters of the Obvious) albums they can. _Single File_ is especially noteworthy.

TMBG fans should also check out Linnell and Flansburgh solo work.

While considerably less mainstream. My friends and I always got a kick out of Slice O' Lime when we we're growin' up. Their website has free downloads of a lot of their tracks and even hints that they've got a new album in the works.

Well not a band, but MC Paul Barman is a riot. He was the first rapper to use palindromes in his rhymes. Not only is he funny, but he can rap pretty well surprisingly. Example, “My dandy voice makes the most anti-choice grannies panties moist.” Check him out.

Della January 22, 2010, 4:15 am

The Salesmen are very funny. Only cubicles in their offices so they must be funny.
