The Daily Ping

There were rumors of a Ping book, but those were started on the internet.

Musical Guilty Pleasure

I have to confess that I have a soft spot for a select few bad 80s singles. And I say “bad” because they just aren’t great songs. But there’s something about them.

First, there’s the Murray Head classic “One Night in Bangkok.” I won’t go into details, because thanks to the Internet, someone else already has. It’s a quirky song that makes me think, “What the hell kind of musical was Chess anyway?”

The next is Wall of Voodoo’s “Mexican Radio.” This has two things going for it (at least:) a great band name, and “Can’t understand just what does he say?” – a fine turn of the phrase.

I’m also not ashamed to admit that I really liked Howard Jones. Though maybe I should be, and I’ll just end this Ping on a low note.

I like Britney Spear's song, "I'm a Slave 4 U," and in a moment of weakness I might even buy the album with that track.

Liking Howard Jones in nothing to be ashamed of! I think he was (is?) brilliant.

My musical guilty pleasure is Erasure, aka "songs to aerobicize to."

Mexican Radio is certainly not a bad song either.

I secretly like a lot of Janet Jackson's songs from "Control."

I can do a perfect kareoke version of Thomas Colby's "She Blinded Me With Science". Right down to screaming "She BLINDED ME.........WITH SCIENCE!".

I don't count Def Leppard here because, dammit, Def Leppard rules. ;)

Rafael! You and the Ping saved my brain! Earlier this week, I was actually singing a When in Rome song at work, and my co-worker who ran a record store in the 80s could not tell me who sang it. THANK YOU!

I promise you...

My fiancee still loves Rick Springfield.

Whatever happened to Greg Khin?

Hey Joseph!
Tell your fiancee that Greg Khin is alive! He has a awesome morning show on KFOX in San Jose (FM 98.5) they've got streaming audio, so if you don't live in the locality, you can still tune in. (M-F 6am to 10am) He tells some great first-hand accounts of being on the road with the band; some funny, funny stories with a bit of mirth mixed in.

The GKB still play--they have a gig next week (Labor Day Weekend, 2004) in San Jose....

I bought the Bath and Body Works Christmas CD last year just so I could finally own Wham's "Last Christmas." In high school, I used to sing it at work to annoy my co-worker Joe. Good times.
