Mute Point

I’m not sure why it happened, exactly, but at one point one of my former bosses started talking about something that was a “mute” point. Not “moot,” but “mute.” He also did this on more than one occasion.

I figured it was just his misunderstanding of the phrase (and never corrected him,) but that isn’t the case: I was reading a blog yesterday that referred to a “mute” point.

The good news is that the Grammar Police are on my side. There is no such thing as a “mute” point – it’s just wrong, really. I like the link from World Wide Words that actually takes the time to hypothesize where the phrase may have originated. But it’s still wrong, so in your face, Grammar Slobs!

But there IS a "moo" point, right? It's a cow's opinion.

Furthermore, people who are hearing disabled are deaf, not death.

I accidentally say death instead of deaf all the time, sorry.

Not dead, just with a shoddy net connection while on vacation.

We occasionally miss days or cover for each other, but it's rare.

Ryan didn't die. He's immortal.

There is a mute point. Just ask Daniel Miller. He won't be able to tell you what it is, but he knows that there is one. Somewhere.

What is this then?
