The Daily Ping: The Musical

By now you may know that Legally Blonde – the middling 2001 movie starring Reese Witherspoon based, in turn, on a book – is now a musical. I have to ask: is this a good idea? And I have to respond to myself: no.

Case in point number one: the first number is “Omigod You Guys.” No, it is.

Case in point number two: it’s a musical version of Legally Blonde.

But if you thought that was bad, consider Rock of Ages. It’s a musical featuring the tunes of such pivotal hair bands as Whitesnake and Journey. I have to ask: is this a good idea, either? And I have to respond to myself yet again: no.

Clearly the theater is out of ideas. And since that’s the case I’d like to recommend this very website as musical fodder. Just think of all of the potential!

Although Legally Blonde doesn’t appeal to me, the concept of doing pop-culture Broadway shows isn’t completely a waste. I saw The Wedding Singer on Broadway a few times (including opening weekend), and it was fantastic. Great casting (Comic/musician Stephen Lynch), witty musical numbers, and yet, it manages to stay true to the movie and the creative energy of Broadway, all at once.

Even though Stephen Lynch is no longer in the cast, I’d recommend the tour when it comes by your city.

What is this then?
