Product Placement

Tonight I was in the grocery store with my daughter, waiting in line to pay. She started touching the conveyor belt and I instinctively blurted out, “Hey, that’s dirty.” Then I looked at the cart handle and everything else around her and said, “Well… everything here is probably dirty.”

No sooner did I say that when I looked up and realized that hanging next to the overpriced disposable cameras no one ever buys is a package of antiseptic wipes. That seemed almost too perfect and knowing what I do about product placement in retail stores (that is, almost nothing), I deduced that they purposely keep the payment lanes dirty so that they can sell more antiseptic wipes. Because, really, are antiseptic wipes ever an impulse buy unless you’re feeling dirty?
