The American Idol Results Show

I’d like to say, now that I watch American Idol intermittently, that the results show is both brilliant and horrible.

The actual content of the show – wherein one contestant is cut from the competition – takes about 42 seconds. That’s it. But the rest of the show is this strange brew of in-show commercials, “tie-ins”, and musical performances involving the remaining contestants. In the show I watched last night, for instance, there was a Ford commercial wherein the contestants dressed up like Twilight-era vampires while singing a song in a creepy forest. Oh, one of the contestants – a non-vampire – was driving a Ford. Surprise!

Moreso I can’t imagine anyone choosing to watch this show without the aid of a DVR or an eyemask.

While I rail against the show, I also realize that from a pure marketing perspective it’s brilliant. People want to know who got cut – even though one would hope by now that they know they can just tune in the last 5 minutes of the show – and they’re watching, so why not sell more things? Smart and evil.
