The Daily Ping

The original Ping was painfully written in Perl.

etc

I learned something new just yesterday. Amazing, I know!

Apparently when one is talking about a Linux filesystem, the “etc” directory can be pronounced “etsy.” In fact here’s a big list of how to pronounce Linux-related terms. I admit, though, I’m still going to pronounce “etc” as “et cetera.” And “mySQL” as “my-sequel.”

In the unix world it has been “etsy” as long as I can remember, and I worked at Bell Labs starting in 1983. Hearing someone say it otherwise would definitely raise a newbie red flag with me. I wouldn’t let anyone saying “et cetera password” near that file.

I’ve never had any reason to say it out loud, thus, “et cetera” is the way I said it in my head. I might still say it that way when speaking just to bother people. And maybe I’ll go back to saying “LIE-nux” too.

What is this then?

The Daily Ping is the web's finest compendium of toilet information and Oreo™® research. Too much? Okay, okay, it's a daily opinion column written by two friends. Did we mention we've been doing this for over ten years? Tell me more!
