Local News Focus

We always hear world and regional news, it seems, but what of the local stuff? I’m curious as to the current media fixation in your neck of the woods.

In Chicago, it’s a tie between the state’s inaction to lower gas prices (Indiana rolled back its state tax for 60 days), and the possible trade of Sammy Sosa. Often here, news about sports stars supercedes that of the President. -pm

Well, in non-world news, our news in Leesburg seems to be: Rottweiler Kills Terrier In Leesburg, the swearing in of a new mayor, and an interesting "lemon lawsuit".

According to the Washington Post, the overcovered world news includes: Elian, Supreme Court Overrules Abortion Procedure Ban, and allowing scouts to ban gays.

In Cleveland, the local news has been all about a Cleveland policeman who was shot in the face and killed late Sunday night by a suspected robber. He was the first Cleveland policeman to be killed in the line of duty in over 2 years.
And of course the other headliner is gas prices. Just as every other Great Lakes and Midwest city has experienced, our gas prices have gone thru the roof! People are pissed off and one particular local resident is taking his protest to Washington DC today. Of course the 11pm news was on top of the story. Personally, I think the guy is an idiot. He drives 4 hours roundtrip to his place of employment in a Jeep Cherokee and now he's crying because he spends $100 per week on gas. Well no shit. What kind of a person drives 2 hours to work anyway? And why is he so surprised that his SUV sucks gas? The kicker of all this is that he plans on driving to Washington DC from Cleveland to lauch his protest.

Oh, one more story that is worth mentioning (can't believe I almost forgot to include this one!)
This past weekend during a wedding reception at a fancy hotel in the area, a fight broke out between the groom, his best man, and the bride's father. I guess during the speech by the bride's father, he accidently introduced the groom by the wrong name, tempers flared, and an all-out brawl erupted, complete with flying chairs and everything. Aspiring WWF members, no doubt. The police were called in and several arrests were made. However, the "happy" couple still made it to their honeymoon trip the next day. Good luck with that marriage!

In these parts of the woods a Hawk flew down and attacked some birds today. Two squirells stood stiff as mannequins for 10 minutes afterwards

Ryan--are you not forgetting about you buying your house? Don't that amount count as HUGE news?

Robert -- Oh yes! :)

What Mista Rob is referring to was this past weekend when I was looking at the Loudoun County section of the Washington Post... they have listings of recently sold houses in there. I decided to check my street to see if any of the newly constructed houses had been bought, and the only house listed was mine! It listed my name, the price I paid for the house, the address and everything. That's something I'd really rather not have appear in print, but what's odd is that we closed on the house at the end of March and here it was in the June 25th edition. Odd.
