Whatever happened to Berkeley Systems?

You remember Berkeley Systems, don’t you? They made After Dark, the first wildly popular commercial screensaver. AD was created in a time before Windows 95 made screensavers truly integrated, and it was created with flair. Who could forget the Flying Toasters? Lawnmower Man? The Simpsons version of AD?

Apparently, everyone. AD fell by the wayside as Berkeley hit it big with a little Jellyvision program you might’ve heard of called You Don’t Know Jack. Jack turned out to be the future of the company, and as the 123 different versions of Jack can attest to, it’s been profitable. Oddly enough, Jack was similar to AD in that it was a bit of a prelude to what was coming down the pipe: online gaming.

Berkeley’s embraced that, too; the game network Bezerk was one of the first commercially successful net gaming sites. But they outsourced that to won.net last year. So what’s left at Berkeley? Not much. While you can still buy AD, why? It doesn’t work on Win 2000 or Mac OS 9, and as their FAQ points out, upgrading software is cost prohibitive. There are dozens of free screensavers out there. And you can still get Jack, but who doesn’t have it already?

The interesting part of the whole story is that Berkeley was bought out by Sierra – formerly Sierra On-Line – which also used to be a highly profitable company. Now, Sierra is but a shell of its former self because it didn’t keep up with the times. Berkeley, whether under the Sierra umbrella or not, succumbed to the same fate. -pm

Nice topic Paul. I grew up playing Sierra games because they were not only innovative but also very entertaining and challenging. Such classic games as the Police Quest, Space Quest, and Kings Quest lines and the Adventures of Willy Beamish(still my favorite computer game ever.) So its interesting to see that they have bought a very successful company. Like you said wonder what they will do with it?

Look in the Answers at http://sierra.custhelp.com

How to find the After Dark registration number for various versions of After Dark.

After Dark 3.0, Simpsons Screen Saver, Star Trek: The Next Generation, X-Men, Looney Tunes:

It is on the lower right-hand corner of the back of the Quick Reference Guide.

The Disney Collection, More After Dark, Star Trek: The Screen Saver:

It is on both halves of the registration card.

Marvel Screen Posters, Star Trek Screen Posters:

It is on the upper-right corner of the QuickStart Card.

If you have lost your After Dark documentation, you can use a generic number:

For Mac versions: LSM-00670-6681
For PC versions: LSW-00670-6681

Berkeley Systems is no more. It was bought and merged into the gaming site Flipside.com. Berk Sys' on-line games like "Get The Picture," and "Acrophobia" were dropped in place of cheap casino games. Very sad. If you're looking for Berk Sys CD-Rom products go to Sierra.com.

I used to have After Dark Star Trek Screensavers, Original & Next Generation as well as the original AD version, on my old 486 system W/3.11but when I upgraded to the Pentium chip with W/95 followed by W/98 & W/Me, my local computer experts (?) told me that I can't use my older AD programs on the newer systems as it will cause the computer to crash, something to do with 16 bit versus 32 bit.. Since I am an absolute PC amateur I would like to know; 1] is that true; 2] if so is there a way around the problem so I can keep and use my beloved Star Trek Screensavers..
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated..

::bowing head in silence::

Yes, it is but a sad, sad day that there will be no more flying toasters floating across computer screens. No more Bad Dog to tear up the desktop, or any of the other onslaught of well crafted screensavers of the Berkeley Systems tongue-in-cheek ilk. I really wish someone would go about purchasing the rights and recreating the modules in a fashion that would be usable in both MacOS X and Windows XP. I do believe people would pay for the modules if they were crafted well, and hell... it could evolve into a sort of e-business as more modules were made and sold per subscription.

Then again, I'm surprised people haven't gone about resurrecting these modules. After all, there was nothing really so graphically explosive about them that you couldn't go about recreating them in Flash and using something like Screentime for the Mac or the PC Flash conversion software to recreate the modules.

If there's ever one thing Flash is good for... ;)

Blame Vivendi. The whole story is available, in bits and pieces, on FuckedCompany.com, under the rubrick of Uproar.com. Berkeley Sytems became Flipside.com, retaining the original BerkSys staff, and maybe you remember YDKJ the Netshow... Then Vivendi decided it would be really lucrative to can the game development and instead sell ad space and really boring games customized to major sponsors. Then a small company in L.A. stole the code to those really boring games, sold ad space on those, had sweeter looking books and was hand fed Flipside by the terrifically depressing management. It was obvious what was happening, and it was agony. I have some stuff left over from when we cleaned out the storage space a year ago - probably not acrophobia, but I'll look...

It is sad. I have like After Dark for a long time. I thought it was still there. I just found a version of Disney After Dark and installed on my Win XP. It seemed to work great. Only problem I notice is that it seems to not listen to the proper mins to wait, and when the screen saver comes on, it is impossible to turn off. It doesn't seem to want to listen to mouse movments. Although, if you turn it on manually, or use the demo it works. great. Will have to play with the settings to see if can tweak it out. I always have liked the flying toaster. I had a friend who had a mac and I loved that saver and always wanted it for PC. I do have it for PC and also have the StarTrek one. Of course, I have the startrek one on another computer I have that still has win 3.1 on it.

I find this phenomenon fascinating, that an article written over two years ago is still drawing responses from the former players of Acrophobia, ,YDKJ and my fave Get The Picture. It is at once reassuring to know so many of us are still out there, and at the same time discouraging to think that the major companies still refuse to bring back these very popular titles. It seems that the Information Highway touted as the new form of freedom in the early 90's has rapidly become, I think, The Information Corporate-Sponsored Toll UnFreeway. The so-called superhighway is now analagous to having to dodge giant billboards which "pop-up" in the middle of the road. The virtual joys of discovering a "Mom and Pop Games," akin to a family run restaurant, has been replaced by an endless stream of fast food restaurants, porno shops and casinos. I no longer have an Internet connection in my house (using public computers or Internet Cafes), and knowing most of what's out there, I really don't miss it. Here's to memories of ICQ 98b, mIRC, BBS's and playing Duke Nukem with zero speed problems on a 28.8 modem. Cheers.

I have the same problem when using the newer versions of The After Dark Program. The starry night module text always flies by too fast. When I used some of the older versions of After Dark such as the one included in the Disney Collection pack, the program works fine though. Of course, the program will not be embedded in your regular system control panel such as it is in version 4. Still though, that is the only way I found to make the modules run fine. Other than the starry night module, you should have no problems though. If you installed some old modules after you installed the actually program though, then you will need to reinstall the program so it registers the modules correctly. Always install the program only after you have installed all of your modules. If you do get some error that your can't read though, it is probably saying that you need to set your monitor to 256 colors. That is all the help I can offer. Hope it does help.

To all "Get The Picture" fanatics. First of all, if anyone has seen or heard of another game like Get The Picture, please let me know. Otherwise I will propose the following: I am an application developer, who like many of you loved playing "Get The Picture". Since I have been unsuccessful in finding it, I am seriously thinking of developing a game similar to Get The Picture. Unfortunately, I do not have the vast server resources that would be neccessary to keep such a game up and running; and like everything else in this world, that type of thing seems to cost money. My question for this board is "How much would a yearly subscription to play this game be worth to you?" I would love to hear from anyone interested. Email me at boomer@cableregina.com.

I just upgraded from mac os 8.1 to 9.1, and am trying to get Expresso 1.0a to work. One of your past submissions said that it will work simply by turning the Expresso Notifier extension off. I just tried that and still cannot open the software. Any other recommendations? Also, for the future, any idea if it can work with os x too? Thanks for your help.

I was one of the original Alpha and Beta testers for Acrophobia, and most of the other Berekeley stuff like YDKJ and Get the Picture actually still have the cool Acrophobia hat they sent us, would never let it go. It was a great game sorry to hear they trashed it :(

I'm considering making a launcher for AD and Win2k and looking for any information that can help me with that.

I considered two possible approaches:
a) writing a screensaver able to launch AD modules or
b) writing wrapper(s) for existing interfaces.

So anybody with information on the following:
- interfaces of modules and/or existing SDK/specifications, preferrably with URLs
- sourcecode for or documentation on AD
- experience in module writing and interface designs
please post here.

If nobody is going to accept any money from AD fans to run the screensavers, it's time to make some Free Software :-)

I'm working on a Performa with Expresso 1.0. Is there any way to export this address book into an internet service such as Yahoo? Yahoo wants Outlook, Palm Desktop, Netscape Address Book, or Yahoo formats.

Family pressure made me replace this Mac with a PC. I always missed the Mac. Now the PC is broken and I am back to the Mac. I just love using it, even though it is slow and all the software is dated. My next computer will definitely be a Mac!

Thanks for any responses.

Ok,

I've got After Dark 4.0 and Totally Twisted for Windows. These were given away on a UK magazine a few years back. Since they aren't supported and nobody is showing any interest in the After Dark series, I can't see any reason why they shouldn't be freely distributed. If anybody wants them, mail me and i'll upload them to a server.

If you've got Windows 2000/XP go here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/appexperience/default.asp

and download the Windows Application Compatibility Toolkit. This SHOULD make AD work on 2K/XP, though I haven't tried it yet.

I'm after more AD modules, if you got 'em let me know. Maybe see about getting a little web site up to make AD available to the general public? :)

I may have some AD/Berkeley Systems software in my storage unit. I was the content editor for GTP/YDKJ online. I might have the default s/n information (code keys) - I will look if anyone is interested.
Berkeley Systems was merged with Won.net, purchased by the French, & renamed flipside after merging with prizecentral.com (which owned virtual vegas). They then consumed iwin.com and uproar.com, moved to Los Angeles and discontinued almost all "original game content", especially if it required scheduled content additions, like Get The Picture.

Christina & Skurtz - Bad dog is a module of AfterDark which can be found in some online stores and p2p programs such as WinMX, Kazaa etc..
AngelFyre - Try reducing screen resolution down to 800x600 16 bit.
Iron - I agree and will do all I can to help - email me (subject AfterDark) and we will talk.
Jeff - Will be in contact soon..
Thanks everybody,
Rossy

Greetings again, folks. I came across this site with info on After Dark, and thought I would share it with everyone. It apparently hasn't been updated for quite some time, but it's still informative. Enjoy!

Marcia, After Dark 10th Anniversary Edition is available for free on KaZaA, but be warned: it is in a single executable file, and is 33.5 Meg in size. If you have a slow, dial-up connection, it will take you quite a while to download it. But hey, it's free. LOL Hope this helps you out.

FROM: Jeff
DATE: Tuesday December 16, 2003 -- 10:23:30 pm
Jay - Bad Dog is not a full screen saver. It is a module for the After Dark engine. You have to have one of the full screen saver versions to run Bad Dog.

Mike - If you are referring to the serial code, there are several generic ones that will work with any After Dark module. If it is a personal password, you probably won't be able to get around it. You will probably have to completely delete After Dark and reload it again.

FROM: Jeff
DATE: Wednesday December 17, 2003 -- 1:43:50 am
Jay - I sent you the Bad Dog module in a zip file. Follow the instructions in the e-mail, and it should work for you. So you will know, there is a game based on this module in the After Dark Games program. Enjoy!

Im dying here. I have a copy of Star Trek: the screen saver, and every time i try to install it, i get an error. i thought it was b/c i didnt copy the files properly, so i d/l another copy. got the same error. will AD not run on WindowsXP?

the university i go to has banned P2P sharing on Kazaa and the likes, so i cant download ANYTHING! it sucks. if anyone can help me out with any AD, and AD star trek programs i'll you a big 'high-five' or something.

If anyone can send me anything, i have a T1 connection... so it should be lightning fast.

FROM: Jeff
DATE: Wednesday January 14, 2004 -- 10:26:54 pm
Courtney, from what I can determine, the After Dark programs will not work on WindowsXP or higher operating systems. It has something to do with the graphics drivers. Most of the modules will work in Windows 98, although a few run way too fast due to the speed of the processors, and some will need for you to reduce the graphics settings. If not, you get the Starry Night default module. You have to remember, all the After Dark screen savers were made in the early to mid 90's, when 486 computers were the fastest out there. Sorry to disappoint you, but that's what I have discovered in my experimenting. Good luck to you.

Joy, I have never used LaunchPad, but this might help you. In the very early versions of the After Dark programs, if you went into your main Windows folder and deleted the file AD.CFG, this would disable the password process. I don't know if that will work with Launch Pad. On another note, I would like to have a copy of Launch Pad, if you could send it to me. If you read some of the earlier posts, you will see that I have a lot of After Dark that I could trade you. Let me know.

I am (and been for quite a while now) a big AD fan. It was refreshing for me to read from so many other AD lovers out there. I just recently reinstalled my old 4.0 version in my XP running machine, and it runs like a breeze. What I did was run the Compatibility Wiz BEFORE installing AD. It prompts you to choose the program from one of several locations. I picked "from the CD" (or something of the sort), after wich I selected the "win98" compatibility option, and checked the "disable visual themes" option. That does the trick! The only modules that don't seem to work properly are "Fish World" and "Rainforest" (if you try to select the animals to be shown in the saver, they lock down AD).
I'm tryin' to get some more modules that were originally designed to run under version 4.0 . Anyone willing to share some of those? My e-mail is zamora@racsa.co.cr . Thanks in advance!

FROM: Oz (a.k.a. Dv8)
DATE: Tuesday January 27, 2004 -- 8:31:58 pm
I forgot to mention: the modules I currently can display under XP are the ones for AD 4.0 (Art Critic, CYb3r W@t, Guernsey Madness, Flying Toasters, Hula Twins, Life & All, Bad Dog!, Marbles!, Messages 4.0, Out n' About, Points of View, Psycho Deli, Rock Paper Scissors, Rodger Dodger, Shadow Agents, Slow Burn, Super Guy, Swirling Magic and Time Flies). I couldn't make other modules, like Flying Toilets!, work at all.
I really miss the old After Dark days, and I grieve not being able to use all of the older modules. Not all is lost, though, as long as I can still enjoy some of the magic!

Greg, there are no longer any active links for After Dark programs online. The only one that was current was a Spanish link for the Simpsons Edition, but the link is no longer valid as of a few weeks ago. You can obtain the 10th Anniversary Edition and the Disney Edition for free on KaZaA, but I have never seen any others offered there. Be prepared, though -- the 10th Anniversary Edition is 34 meg in a zipped file, so with a dial-up modem it will take quite a while to download. Hope this helps you out.

hello RedSpy. thanks for your reply. and yes I have the marvel screen posters, but there is one official afterdark animated X men scrensaver. I read your list and I believe you already have all modules I have. except for one unofficial called screamsavers (as far as I know snoopy and flinstones are unofficial too) I would be interested in looking that flinstones module too he he. it seems the x men module is the hardest to get :(

Jorge, I have heard mention of "Screamsavers" also, but have never seen it. I also have a program I have never mentioned here before called "Before Light", which was a program that came out commercially in 1994 in competition with After Dark. I believe the Berkeley people must have raised a legal stink, because it disappeared quickly, but it was a collection of screen savers made in the same vein as After Dark. Fortunately, I was able to get the original CD of it before it disappeared. LOL I have seen mention of an X-Men After Dark program online, in sites where they list the serial codes, but I have never seen any other mention of that program. The Snoopy Screen Savers was made by Berkeley & After Dark, and was one of the earliest of their screen saver programs. The Flintstones version is from the live-action movie, and was not made by Berkeley, but is made to work in the After Dark program, which is why I include it in my list. I have heard that there are other "unofficial" After Dark programs (not just fan-made modules, but full programs), but I have not really researched this area yet. Maybe in the near future.

Redspy. oh I see. well since flinstones is based in the live movie I lost interest in it LOL. the cartoon is way better. well the x men module is pne I really want badly he he ... maybe anybody else can help us with this one. and if you want the screamsavers I can send it bye mail. just let me know if your email adress can handle 3 files of 1.30 mb each and the module itself is not big deal just a bunch of horrible faces doing gross things. :)

FROM: RedSpy
DATE: Monday June 14, 2004 -- 12:11:42 am
Jorge, sounds like the "Screamsavers" is the module from the Totally Twisted program where you create horrible faces, or something similar. My face is pretty horrible, too, so it shouldn't be too much of a shock for me. LOL My e-mail can handle it, if you care to send it. If there is anything I can send you in return, let me know. I'll be happy to trade with you. As far as a Flintstones module featuring the cartoons, I've never seen it. I always see serial codes listed for the Flintstones version, but logic tells me that it's the one from the movies, as that's the only one I've ever found reference to. Of course, it just gives us something more to search for. LOL I'm starting to think that the X-Men program is another one made by an independent company, but made to work in the After Dark engine the same way the Flintstones program was designed. We'll see. I'm sure someone will come across it one day. Of course, I'm no expert on After Dark by a long shot, but I have spent a good number of years researching and building my collection. I've been trying to find every program I could, and identify any that may be available. Too bad the Berkeley Systems After Dark website is no longer running with any information on it.

FROM: RedSpy
DATE: Monday June 14, 2004 -- 12:53:14 am
To anyone who is interested, here is what I have been able to determine so far. Apparently, Berkeley Systems did, indeed, create an X-Men Edition of After Dark. However, all the information I have come across so far indicates that it was only made in a MAC version. I will continue my research, and let you know what else I come up with. One thought comes to mind. Perhaps someone who is familiar with MAC programming can take the MAC version and convert it to PC version. If not, perhaps the images and graphics can be incorporated into a PC version utilizing ScreenStudio for After Dark, which is the program that allows you to create your own After Dark modules. Further research is definitely warranted.

thanks redspy! well I ran into a little problem. I can't send more than 1 meg. from hotmail. if you use msn or icq send me an email to arrange that. as far as the x men module I'm pretty sure there is a PC version because I have a PC magazine that list every afterdark module including the x men module. maybe you could send me the stardate progrma since a I am a stra trek fan LOL thanks again!

Jorge, I have seen lists that say that an X-Men Edition was made, as well. But as I said, I can only find references to a MAC version. We'll just have to keep searching, I suppose. As far as the e-mail, break your file down into small groups and send it to me, and I'll be happy to send you the StarDate program in return. Just let me know if I have to break it into small groups, as well. I only use AOL e-mail, so that will have to do. Hope to hear from you.

Jorge, I got your e-mails containing the ScreamSavers program files. As I suspected, it is not a Berkely Systems product, but another program made to work in the After Dark engine. I have tried numerous times to install it, but I keep getting a message saying that a required file (resource.dll) is missing, and it will not install. If you can check your files, please send me this file, and I will try again. Once I can get it to work, I'll be happy to send you the StarDate program. I have it broken down into three files; Disc 01, Disk 02, and the Serial Number. Hope to hear from you.

FROM: Jorge
DATE: Wednesday June 16, 2004 -- 11:25:38 am
hello redspy! well I just checked my install disks and that file isn't there. (and neither I have it on my HD ... LOL) did you install from temp directories? I mean you create a temp dir and inside you create disk1 disk2 and disk3 dirs with the first email being the content of disk1 and so on (the mails that say part2 goes inside of her respective dirs) some modules are very picky about this. also try to copy the first disk into floppy (I had to do that with twisted I believe) if not maybe is some problem with XP (I use win 98) sorry if I can't be of more help. see ya!

FROM: RedSpy
DATE: Tuesday June 22, 2004 -- 1:12:46 am
Jorge, yes, I tried creating three folders within a temp folder. Then I tried by emptying all the files into one folder. Then I copied them to three floppy discs. It always gives me the same message. Missing a resource.dll file, and if I continue past that and continue to try to install, it then says it cannot create a dialog box, and will not let me go any farther. I am using Windows 98, as well. I don't know what else to try. Thanks anyway.

Jorge, I sent you an e-mail containing a list of all the files in the three discs for the program, as you requested. Nothing I have tried will make it work. I keep getting the same two error messages I told you about. If you can figure out what file is missing, or send me a copy that actually works, I'll be happy to send you the StarDate program you want. Thanks again for trying.

hey RedSpy, try this: left click on the install file, and go to the "compatibility" tab (in XP). Select "run this program in compatibility mode for:" then select win 95, and maybe diable visual themes too for good measure. my question: did ANYONE have any luck getting old after dark modules to run under winXP? I have After Dark Deluxe (v4.1), but only the 4.0 modules will run... I want my flying toasters like I remember them in computer class from 7th grade!!! Can anyone help with this problem??

FROM: RedSpy
DATE: Friday July 2, 2004 -- 5:57:13 am
Greetings. For those of you who send me e-mails asking about making After Dark work in Windows XP, I am including a link to a webpage that offers the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit, that will help with this problem. As you all my know, the After Dark programs were made in the early 90's, when the fastest computers out there were 386-486 speed. Modern computers have processors that run way too fast for some of the modules. Because of this, some of the modules will run extremely fast, or not at all, and will show the default Starry Night screen. Also, a lot of the modules will only run in 256-color mode, and if you don't change the graphics settings, you will also get the Starry Night module. I hope this answers some questions. Here is the link to the website: http://www.andy.clark.dial.pipex.com/hobbies/screen/screen_ad.htm

Here is the SOLUTION to the Launch pad password bypass problem.

First restart your PC and hit F8 when it says something like "starting up Windows 9x"

Next choose the option to start the PC in "ms-dos" mode

then you'll get a prompt; something like c:\>

enter "edit", without the quotes of course

you should get a blue screen click on "File">"Open">under "directories" choose "windows"> under "files" find "LAUNCHPD.INI">hit ok

Just read the line
AdultPassword = YOUR SANITY
(whatevers on the right side of the equation is your password)

Close everything and restart
once your back in launch pad type in the password you just found....and your done

Anybody out there who wants to help a poor Trekkie is welcome to offer. :) I desperately want to have a copy of Star Trek: The Original Series screen saver package. I would love to find out how to avoid the problem in Windows XP with 10th Anniversary about 256 colors - we have WINXP Home and can't even set it below 16 bit color. Anybody know how to cheat the 256 color limit or have a copy of Star Trek: TOS they'd email me? I'd appreciate it greatly. ALOT of fun, reading about other peeps who miss AD. I recently got a collection of AD to run on a REAL old Toshiba laptop (running 98se of course). I immediately remembered that I have SEVERAL other sets of AD from when I built machines in the 90s. I seem to remember a specific one with two or three little cats playing.....REALLY missed that. I think the CD I have is called "The Ultimate collection"...but it doesn't seem to be too ultimate. I am going to try and find all my AD floppies (Still should have 'em). I think I even had a few strange "one-off" modules that worked "with" AD. I just remembered seeing the pink floppy for the Energizer Bunny screensaver, and I think it installed as a module if you already had AD installed. Any help would be appreciated about just WHICH version of AD the little cats are on.

I come back to work, and somebody IMMEDIATELY tells me to go answer that DAMN celphone locked up in my office. Turns out, it was the old Toshiba laptop (720CDT).....running the toasters, complete with the little Wagner "Flight of the Valkyrie" MIDI tune. Forgot how much I used to be SO astounded by how GOOD midi sounded at the time. Now that "sound" elicits "Answer your CEL PHONE!" responses. How times have changed! When I brought out that little laptop to the "common area", and employees got to actually SEE the toasters, I caught alot of employees just STARING at it...and so many "WOW!.....I remember that!"

So fun....I need to find this Ten Year anniversary collection now :-)

I just purchased a mac mini and got excited at the idea of playing lunatic fringe again. We wasted hours and hours of study time back in college with that module. If anyone has the mac module for lunatic fringe (part of AD deluxe), and could e-mail it to me, I would greatly apprecite it.

For Lunatic Fringe, try Maelstrom located at Ambrosia software, http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/maelstrom/ . If I remember right, they are essentially one in the same!

Hudson, you cannot get all the modules from any After Dark version to work correctly on any operating system above Windows 3.1 -- I will try to explain. After Dark was made in the early 90's, when the fastest computers out there were 386-486 systems. The processors in modern computers run WAY too fast for the old After Dark engine. In my experimenting, I have discovered that most of the After Dark programs will work on Windows 95 and Windows 98. However, a few of the modules will run as if they have been tuned to high-speed warp mode. There is no way to slow them down. Also, some of the modules will say that they cannot be run, and will give you the generic "Starry Night" city-scape scene. This second problem can be fixed by going into your Control Panel and Display Properties, and changing your graphics settings back to 256-color mode. This will not change anything on your computer, but you will have to increase the grahics settings again to get the full depth and color that you enjoyed before when looking at pictures or web pages, etc. This is a small hassle, and I suggest just changing the settings when you want to leave the After Dark running. Then change them back for normal computer use. XP, ME, and the higher operating systems will not run After Dark. This is because Microsoft removed a lot of the basic graphics drivers as a cut-back when they made these systems. If you recall, they got a lot of complaints from consumers who couldn't play games on these systems because of this. Now the game manufacturers put DirectX drivers into folder on the game CD's, and Microsoft allows you to download the drivers from their website to fix most of these problems. Other than that, the system processors just run WAY too fast for the old After Dark engines. There are web sites that have tool kits to allow you to make After Dark and other programs run on XP, but they require some type of programming, and I have no idea how complicated it is, as I have never tried it. I suggest you do a web search for one of the tool kits. Anyway, I hope this answers some of your questions, and helps you out.

I have been looking all over for a copy of Totally Twisted After Dark. I used to have this screensaver a few years ago, but it was lost when I bought a new computer and was trying to transfer my old files and software. I still have my old Win98 running computer, but the Twisted AD program is gone. In my opinion, this was the best AD program released by Berkley. Very funny!
If anyone has a copy of this program you could send me I would be very grateful! My email is scott75"at"gmail.com . I'm sorry, but I have nothing to trade. Any donations to my AD addiction will be greatly appreciated!

Greetings. Here are some responses to the last few postings that I hope will be helpful.

Scott, the Totally Twisted Edition can be found on eBay fairly cheap. It is one of the only PC versions that I ever see posted there. Most of the other After Dark programs are for MAC. I would be willing to trade it to you for something, but you said in your post you have nothing to trade.

EXone, there is no place online that I know of where you can download the Looney Tunes Edition. Believe me, I have been searching the web for years to build up my collection, and I know of no working site with a copy. If you have something to trade, drop me an e-mail, and I'll be happy to set you up with a copy.

Don, if you are using any of the "special edition" versions of After Dark (Disney, Simpsons, Looney Tunes, etc.) that loads from either 3.5" discs, or someone sent it to you in e-mail, there is a common problem with all of them. The SETUP.EXE file for each one has a tendency to become corrupted after either being copied, or after being loaded only once or twice. Unfortunately, each program's SETUP.EXE file is coded for that specific program, and they can't simply be interchanged with other programs. I have found in my experimenting that when the program files are saved onto a CD, it seems to fix the problem. But if you are using the floppies or a zipped or downloaded file, you will run into problems after one or to installs.

I hope this helps you guys out. Happy trading!

I have the entire line of After Dark programs, and I'm not looking for any. I am willing to trade for other programs, though. Thanks for some of the help, but, er, my problem is that the setup won't load because it says I need Windows 3.1 or for Workgroups. I've tried everything short of installing them manually via DOSBox with a bootup iso, and I really don't want to bother with such a headache. Any luck on this problem? :\

Also, I've come up with another problem. Someone got me a copy of the 10th Anniversary edition and it works fine on 2k, but this more modern copy refuses to play the older modules (3.0 runs all the other ones fine). Is there a way to fix this? Thanks for any information if you have any (and thanks even if you don't have any).

FROM: RedSpy
DATE: Wednesday April 6, 2005 -- 6:07:20 am
Don, if you are trying to install Disney onto any operating system above Windows 98, you aren't going to have any luck. The older After Dark programs just aren't capable of operating on the higher, faster operating systems. The same goes for your 10th Anniversary. It's not a problem with the program. It's just that some of the modules were made to run on extremely slow systems, with only 256 colors, and just won't run on the fast systems. If you reduce your graphics display to 256 colors, most of the modules will then work, but some will still run way too fast. I posted a long message a few posts up explaining this. I hope this helps you out.

FROM: Chris Wyatt [E-Mail]

To Michael S,
If you want 256 colours in Windows XP you have to open up Display in the Control Panel, go to the Settings tab and click the Advanced button, then open the Adaptor tab and click List All Modes, then you can work out the rest. Also, I miss After Dark Marbles and just want this one screensaver on my Win XP PC, and a question: are the AfterDark modules actual programs themselves or could they just be emulated to work under XP.

FROM: RedF
DATE: Thursday April 7, 2005 -- 2:10:36 pm
Chris,

The After Dark modules are actually standard Windows DLL's (Dynamically Linked Library), that export one required routine: 'Module'. This routine is called by the After Dark 'Shell' (the .exe and the .scr executable files in the various versions).

Okay folks, I'm so happy to have found this place. I started thinking that I was the only one on the planet missing After Dark.

After originally buying version 1 and version 2 of After Dark long ago, I bought AD 4.0 (wich includes After Dark online) last week on E-Bay.

I was expecting nothing but to spend a couple of dollars dedicated to nostalgia. So great was my surprise when I discovered that *all* the modules of this version run on my XP Professional SP2 environment.

4.0 modules
---------------
Art Critic
Bad Dog!
CYb3r W@t
Fish World
Flying Toasters!
Guernsey Madness
Hula Twins
Life & All
Magic Turtle (no color cycling)
Marbles!
Messages 4.0
Out 'n About
Points of View
Psycho Deli
Rainforest
Rock Paper Scissors
Rodger Dodger
Shadow Agents
Slow Burn
Super Guy
Swirling Magic
Time Flies

'Classic' module
--------------------
Starry Night (way too fast shooting stars)

I'm running 1280*1024 32 bit true color

Obviously color cycling will not work in this mode since it depends on palette rotation (much used in the earlier days, actually still used to animate the windows boot screens while loading the OS).

The Starry Night module clearly uses delay loops instead of Windows Timer messages to control speed and interval of the events.

All in all i'm quite happy!

O yeah before I forget, my son and daughter (10 and 8 yrs old) are in love with Bad Dog!

:-)

Inspired by the succes (see above) of reviving After Dark, I have been spelunking through my boxes with old software.

And behold, I found my original After Dark for Windows Version 2.0 box.

There was a flyer inside, showing After Dark merchandise!

Did you all know that there was available:

Flying Toasters (T-Shirt $10.95 / Sweatshirt $15.95)
Fantastic Fish (T-Shirt 11.95 / Sweatshirt $16.95)
The Flying Toaster Tie (Nave, Red, Forest Green or Burgundy $17.95)
The Modular Mouse Pad (see through mousepad with 8 AD designs $11.95)

There is a really nice picture showing people wearing all this stuff. One of them is holding a fully sized flying toaster, with its wings spread, on a leash.

I really have to scan this one for other 'oldies' that are interested.

Aw man, how could something so incredibly nice, completely evaporate?

BTW. the Flying Toasters are referred to as "the 51st Flying Toaster Squadron".

By the way, After Dark 4.1 Deluxe and 10th Anniversary Collector's Editions will load the After Dark Control Panel into the Windows 95 & Windows 98 Screen Saver Control Panel, making it work a lot easier. These are the only two versions of After Dark that will do that. Of course, any other versions loaded will also go into the Windows panel if you have one of these two loaded. I have determined, through my experimentation, that several other screen savers not made by After Dark will load into and run in the After Dark Control Panel just as the Flintstones Movie screen saver will. I have now determined that the Jurassic Park and Rocky & Bullwinkle screen savers will load into After Dark. Long out of production, both were made by Asymetrix Entertainment, which used a control panel very similar to After Dark's panel. Myke, some After Dark programs require you to re-install them if you install another product after it was installed. This is just a glitch, because the After Dark engine that is the primary has to read all the installed modules, and can only due this during the installation process. I would suggest re-installing either 4.0 or the Disney Collection again, and when the engine kicks in during the re-boot, it should read all the modules. I hope this helps.

I found one person who had the single disc for sale, but he wanted $55.00 as a starting bid, which is ridiculous for one floppy. There is a website run from another country that lists all the Berkeley products, including LaunchPad, but I have not been able to get them to answer any of my numerous e-mails requesting a purchase, so I think the site is gone. If you have any luck, let me know, and I will do the same for you.

There was once a collection of 90 major US college and universities that were all licensed and distributed with the After Dark engine. All of the screensavers had specific histories, stories, and traditions details, with historic photos, 'recent' photos, and animated card stunts for every school. Sold individually at the colleges. A third party developer made them, but they were are officially sanctioned by Berk Systems. Schools like USC, UCLA, North Carolina, Michigan, Florida, Iowa - almost all the majors from all over the country. Funny how they all disappeared when after dark stopped being supported. TOo bad too.

Nice topic. I remember having After Dark 2.0 installed on my 1st new computer in 1992. When I got bored then I let AD entertain me. Btw, it's quite impossible now to get the whole collection. Lets say: AD 2.0, AD 3.2, More AD, Marvel, ST - The Next Generation, ST - Star Date, Looney Tunes, Disney, AD Deluxe, AD Games, AD Classic, AD 4.0, Simpsons, ST - Movie Poster, AD 10th Anniversary, AD Totally Twisted. I wish if there is CD packed with complete collection. Any suggestion?

RedSpy, congratulation for having the most complete colection of After Dark. Anyway, coud you kindly send me AD Midnight, AD Deluxe, X-Men and Star Wars Screen Entertainment? I know that I ask alot but I think your generousity will make you help me.

FROM: RedSpy
DATE: Wednesday August 24, 2005 -- 6:22:35 am
Flying Toaster: Yes, I seem to have a fairly complete collection, but unfortunately, they are too large to send in e-mail. I am on a standard dial-up modem, and just can't send out stuff that large. As for your suggestion, I put the entire collection together on one CD-ROM for a gentleman in Australia who wanted to buy the entire collection. With the DEMOS and AOL folders removed, they will all fit onto one CD-ROM, believe it or not. As for my generosity, I used to send them out when asked, but people stopped sending me the programs they promised in return, so I don't do that any more. If you have anything worth trading, I'm always willing and able to do some trading, but I don't just give them away any more.

i used to perform technical support for berkeley systems during the heyday of afterdark 3.x , 4.x onto the launch of YDKJ and the netshow.

hacked the heck out of ad 4.0 to get it to run on nt 4 (at the time that was a big deal)

i still have quite a collection of after dark, berkeley systems merchandise.

it was quite a bummer that the company that was started with such high standards took a giant crapper once the bigger boys took hold (Talking about u CUC) They tried to get us to move to Washington to continue on the high tech support standard that we had set. There was no way I was heading up there to leave my sunny cal. behind.

strange to see such a cult following for these ancient screens. You know we did release a SDK (Software Development Kit) so that users could create their own designs , we even held contests , had users submit their code and on Totally Twisted we used one of those winners submissions.

Riding down the slide every day into the lunch room was grand. The web cam pointed directly at the little odwalla fridge (never had to leave your desk to see if your favorite beverage was available) .... ahhh the days before .com meant anything.

i went on to work for the SUN and many other high tech companies in the bay area.

now i live peacefully in the mountains with wife , kids and the technical support role continues -- only this time its with high end broadcast clients, not the average home user. Boy did I learn alot working there....

peace and RIP

I happened to find this page by accident through a search engine. I recently revived an old socket 7 machine. I would like to thank those that posted links to the Trek screensaver. I had it, but I lost the reg number long ago. A while after that, I lost the floppies it came on. I have been carrying those old modules for a long time, but they got corrupted, and they wouldn't play anymore.

For those that are having trouble making it work on Windows 9X: Install Startrek first. Don't let it modify your configuration files. Shut it down ASAP, then don't run it again. If you install a product like After Dark 4 over it, it will then make a folder for Startrek, then it will update your modules, so it will run properly. It will still require 256 colors for some modules, but most of them will run including "The mission" (One of my favorites) I can't speak for XP, but it will run under 98. There is one thing that bothers me, though. I wish that Psycho Deli & Nirvana would have made an attempt to redraw the pixels, when not in 256 color mode. It would have been aweful slow, but it would look great on a modern machine. I don't like how the screen gets messed up in 256 color mode.
Just my opinion. I noticed some comments from August 2005, so I figured the horse wasn't dead yet.

There has got to be a way to get the word out about discordi (cosmic consensus) so that more people will play the game. Every time i go to play there is only like 4 or 5 people playing it at a time. Spread the word, make discordi well known! By the way, those abercromnie, backwards hat wearing, tatoos of barbwire on arm, sag pants to their knees, pricks... yeah, those guys are called CHODES. Hi RedSpy!

I'm back again too.. Great to see that the AD lovers are still out there!
I recall that someone was thinking about doing an emulator, or updated AD engine to run on XP (by slowing the CPU) so it could run all modules.. Did that ever eventuate?
I'm interested in getting a CD copy of all the AD modules/progs you have?
How much?? (maybe you could sell these CD's and by that $50 version of launchpad...)
Let me know..
All the best,

I wanted the original marbles when I started this mission. Managed to find AD and change the ini to install (without reading how to do it.) Had to check up on the compatibility issue. Now its running, but I see AD 3.0 modules are not supported in XP.

Someone should write an engine for these, Im not geeky enough.

I guess theres an openGL version of flying toasters for linux bundled with XScreensavers.

Theres also this for mac users; http://en.infinisys.co.jp/product/adx/
After Dark X for OSX users. Has toasters, fish, mower man, etc.

Sucks to be a windows XP user right now.

I found a solution for the "Requires Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups" error when updating from AD 3.0 to AD 3.2 under WinXP. (I was overcomplicating it)!!!

For those that arent familiar with it, AD 3.2 adds an option to skip the warning messages about drivers not being installed (which you cant install under XP anyway) and adds a tray icon for quick access to ADs menu. NOTE: The tray icon does NOT activate AD, you still need the main program running (minimized) in the taskbar before any of the savers will show up on the pre-4.x AD versions.

I previously installed the upgrade over my Windows 98 installation and tried copying the entire main Win98 AD folder over the WinXP AD folder. When I tried this, AD would sometimes not launch the modules and often would not exit.

Last night I tried copying the adw30.exe file and the adtray.exe file (and ONLY these files) from the Win98 install to the WinXP folder and it worked PERFECTLY.

It may not be the complete upgrade, but it has given me no problems so far.

(For those that need those files, I can send them to you, as you will not be able to get them unless you have a dual boot system (or even better, dual HDs with different OSs).

HTH!!!!

P.S. I don't know if this would work for the Totally Twisted version which gives the same error. When I tried to copy my Star Trek TOS modules from Win98 to WinXP (to correct a different problem), AD 3.2 did NOT recognize them and did not work.

I will probably try running the install using regmon and filemon to see exactly what it is doing under Win98!!!

I also found a solution (at least it worked for me) for the "Set-up.exe is corrupt" problem. RedSpy clued me in to it when he posted that it also occured on the original floppies, and on E-mailed and downloaded files, but not on files burned to CD's.

For those who don't know what I am talking about - After I downloaded Star Trek TOS and installed it on different machines, I for some reason uninstalled it and tried to install it again. When I did, it went through the install, took the serial number, and then when it started to extract the files, it said it couldn't open the first .zip file and that setup.exe appeared to be corrupt and to contact Berkley systems for support (!!!). It was not a matter of file corruption, though, as a re-download of the file (to a different directory) would still fail.

I also was e-mailed an .img file and the extracted files from the More After Dark module. When I tried to run the extracted files, I got the same error, but when I extracted the image files to a floppy drive, it worked.

It appears that these modules dislike installing multiple times from the same media i.e. the same HD or the same original floppies. What worked for me was copying the files to a jump drive and installing from it. I suspect that it might not work the third or fourth time I tried this, but burning to a CD and installing from there will probably work, if needed.

Unknowns - Nobody has reported this problem with the main distributions of AD (AD 2.0, AD 3.0, etc, so I don't know if it affects them also.)

I don't know if installing from the jump drive or a CD would fail if I tried it multiple times - if it does, it is likely that copying the files to the HD and burning to a new CD will change the volume label and allow it to install, but this is supposition on my part.

I also have a partial "fix" for not being able to display Planetary Atlas (From Star Trek TOS AD) unless you are in 256 color mode.

What I plan to do is run the module and save screen prints of each planet after the descriptive text has been entered. I will then display these images in the Slideshow module from AD 3.0.

You will lose the "spin" of the planet and the teletype effect, but the main info should be there, and it should be useful.

NOTE that slideshow does not scale the images, so you will need them at your desktop resolution.

I plan to take the initial shots at 800x600 screen resolution as it seems to have the best combination of image size vs. blockiness, and is also the current default for web design content. (Also because images downscale better than they upscale, so 640x480 looks very blocky scaled to 1280x960, but AD changes the text size based on the resolution, so 1280x960 images look blurry reduced to 640x480).

I haven't decided whether I will offer the images re-scaled to another resolution or have users re-scale them (www.irfanview.com) can do this for all the images in a batch process, so it's not a big deal either way.

If anyone thinks the initial images should be at a different resolution, let me know soon as I don't plan to re-make an entire set after I finish the first one (I think it's like 100 images or sth).

Otherwise, I will post back when the images are available if anyone is interested.

Thy, the Nanites module was made to run in After Dark Engine 3.2, and will not run under XP. Only modules after Engine 4.0 will run under XP, if you are lucky enough to get After Dark to run at all. However, some people have posted that they have been able to get them to run, so I'm sending you the Nanites module and wishing you luck. Enjoy!

Thanks for trying to help me out. Too bad the one module I like best is the one I will not ever be able to get to work. ugh... just my luck! I'll just have to make a Nanite saver of my own. But it won't look as cool as I remember the AD one looked on my college lab PC back in '95. (In between my working times of course. :)

Thy, the Nanites module will run in a computer with Windows 98. Maybe if you have an older computer, you can set it up and run your screen saver on that one. Just a suggestion.

FROM: ThyPentacle
DATE: Monday December 5, 2005 -- 8:57:00 pm
Great news... got really sad and decided I would try to get this thing to run on XP no matter what it did to me!.... and.... it works now. oh YAY!!

I did it by backing up my system first... installing win98se, installing the Star Trek module, then AD 3.0, then the Star Trek: The Next Gen module.... copied all the installed files.... then restored my system (ghost is sure handy), installed AD 3.0 on XPsp2 and let it change my system files (though later removed the auto load setting), then overwrote all those files in the install directory 'c:\afterdrk' with the copied directory from win98... presto... all modules work and the only nag is the .386 file won't load error when you first run it, which is no big deal.

No bugs in any modules and 256 color mode even works for the Nanites saver as well as the rest that use that mode... oooooooo color cycling. Only drawback is a few of the savers run really really really fast... All the really cool ones I like run great. (borg, nanites, bad dog, flying toasters)

Version of AD I ended up with is the one with the Next Gen module... which I guess is the newest one that works on XP without having to download a big huge file. (on 56k here)

Anyways I'm just glad to see it working... kinda sorta better than nothing. :)

Best to all,

Thy

FROM: ThyPentacle
DATE: Tuesday December 6, 2005 -- 7:02:00 am
Final note... you can get rid of the .386 error by copying the file 'ADW30.EXE' from the 3.2 version of AD on top of the previous copies from the win98 install above. It won't be the true 3.2 version, but it has the 'don't show error' check box option and seems to run ok so far.

Now to figure out how to remove it from the taskbar when minimized.

Thy

P.S. Sorry if this is a bit off topic, but I'm sure someone, if anyone still reads this post, will find it handy maybe. *pokes the people that wanted to get 'bad dog' to work in XPsp2* ;).

After Dark 3.2 for Windows XP

For those that miss the old Star Trek modules that dont run on XP, this is for you. I got version 3.2 of After Dark to run on XP pretty well. Its not full 3.2, but rather the runner, .dll, and support files for it, but it has the best parts of 3.2 and I think most, if not all 3.2 version modules will run on it fine. It wont go into the display properties box but it does run hidden with a task starter next to the clock, so as long as you turn off your XP screensaver (set it to none) you should be ok. It works perfect on my XPsp2 and I hope you have the same luck with it.

Be sure to read install info on my site fully and enjoy! ^_^

I check this forum regulary. I was so sad sierra lost the plot, but that is the way of big business. Take over the smaller successful companies then grind them into the dirt, then refuse to release the great programs for sale again. sigh..

Hi guys,

I recently dug up an old CD of After Dark (3.2 I believe) and had no luck getting it to run under Win XP.

I too remember the wonderful stuff on After DArk, especially the Totally Twisted version.

Anyway, after stumbling across this form, I downloaded AD3 from the link listed above somewhere (http://www.abandoneer.com/games.php?gameid=31) and to my amazement, it installed fine and runs great!
I chose not to modify files as XP doesn't use autoexec.bat etc.
It also warned me that the PC speaker woildn't be used, but on my IBM laptop the sound is fine.

Now, how do I add other modules, like the Totally Twisted (if I can find the disk) or will these not run?

Anyway, tought this may help if anyone is still struggling with AD and Win XP.

Next to try on the desktop..

Cheers,

Mike.

The Totally Twisted modules are available bundled with all the others in the Ultimate 100 module packs on my site. The site is getting far more hits than intended so I pass my bandwidth limits fast, so if the site is down try again in an hour. You can also get versions of After Dark that work on XP. They are 3.2 and 4.0. You need both versions on XP as 4.0 won't run old modules on NT based operating systems. However both my versions run fine together and they both run hidden. (unlike the 3.0 version from abandoneer)

Hello all,
My wife and I acquired ' After Dark Games ' when we bought our first and so far, only computer. We've been playing the various games for a number of years now and I'm writing this because I was wondering how many other people know that the programmers of ' After Dark' enabled the games to cheat the player.
The reason they did this is unknown now but I'm sure the truth will be revealed some day. It's bad enough inventing games that can't be won, only played; but when you add cheating to the mix it becomes almost criminal. Discovering this hidden agenda aggravated me but being an adult, I simply shrugged it off and discontinued playing the games. What is truly despicable though is the effect it has on young children.
Children ( and I say this from personnal experience with my own grandson ) expect to be able to win a game if they pursue it long enough and work at it hard enough. When they fail and find they simply cannot win, it is extremely destructive to their emotional make-up. It actually brought my grandson to tears until I sat down with him and explained to him that the games are designed so you cannot win.
Whether it's the extra cards in ' Solitaire ' ( 2 queens of clubs ), the actual slowing down of the mower in ' Mowing Maniac ' as the game progresses and the pursuers speed up; the words in ' Bad Dog' that you can't find in any dictionary, or the false statements in ' Zapper ' that also have false answers.
Shame on the inventors of these games. I only hope that someday you'll feel some remorse for your deeds and beg forgiveness.

Do you have any type of instant messenger? If so, and if you're still willing to try and send it to me, just send me your contact info to this email : weedtabarnack@hotmail.com . This is my main email but I only have 2 MB space (Hotmail won't upgrade my stupid account), so sending the file to that email wouldn't work.

AOL handles e-mails up to 16 megs in size, but for some reason the first two times I sent it, it didn't get to you. Just unzip the three files into one folder, and you should be able to install it from there. Please let me know if it works for you this time. If it does, enjoy!

In case anyone is interested, I have sort of unofficially ressurected Get The Picture to the best of my ability (but minus the Fat Chance sequence, which I always disliked). It's a Java app, so it can run on just about anything. I've actually had it up for about a year and a half now. It's not especially busy, but there's usually some people on at night playing.

It's called Words That Follow. It's at http://www.side-quest.com/sqgames/ if you want to give it a try.

Since it's just a fan project, I don't have the $300 or $400 or so that it costs to get code signing for web applications, so you'll get a scary looking "this program's signature is invalid" message when you load the game, but there's really not much I can do about it.

Hope to see you all there. I go by CronoMST on there as well.

Haha! My game was just compared to boxed wine. That's pretty amusing. If I even come up with a game development group, it'll have to be "Boxed Wine Games." I like that.

It's just me working on the game. It's really one of the few games I've ever managed to finish. I don't have a team of programmers or artists, but I think I've at least captured the basic functionality of the original game (minus all the charm). I'm still working on it, though. :) I've even thought about throwing in some narration. Of course, it would just be me doing the recording, so I make no promises about the quality of that either. Merilyn, the Bad Dog program is not a stand-alone screen saver, but an individual module in some of the After Dark collections. You have to have a full version of one of the After Dark programs to run Bad Dog. Just thought I would let you know.

after skimming over a few of these entries, i've deduced the acrophobia game i once loved (years ago) is no more...but, interestingly, there are LOTS of ex players who are as sad as me about it. In all this time, has no one made something similar? Is there no where like it to rekindle my alphabet madness? Perhaps an online psychiatric evaluation I might fill out while I wonder what to do with the spare time I was hoping to steal from myself....hmmm

Hi. I'm CoinCollector. I have been reading this for quite a while, and am almost through it. So...yeah.
The other day, I went to Half Price Books (a store that sells lots of things besides books), and searched through the old software, and fount Triazzle: the Rainforest Edition! Yay! Got it for two bucks. It's in very good condition. So now, I have the originals of:

Triazzle:Rainforest Edition
After Dark Games

And recently, I bagged a black Flying Toaster tie off EBay.

I have a copy of 3.1 Windows After Dark on floppy. I’ve loaded it on every computer I’ve owned since 1993. Lunatic Fringe runs on my XP under DOS, tho the high processor speed makes it a bit jumpy sometimes. It’s still fun anyway.

Hi, would anyone be willing to sell some After Dark / Berkeley system products. I would like: X-Men, Snoopy, Screen Studio, Expresso, StarDate, Launchpad and After Dark 3.1 or 3.2, would pay a reasonable amount for these, plus shipping to the UK. Price would be dependent on condition eg. with box, sealed / not, new, used etc. (FOR WINDOWS ONLY).

Since Windows have stopped doing patches for Windows ’98, they’re not recommending anyone still use ’98 because of not getting updates / virus updates etc. So, for anyone that feels like it’s a waste of time having these, because they can’t run them anymore, i have a good home for them.
So, why not sell them & make use of the money to get something you do want.

Only people who are serious about selling please, e-mail me at kward01@hotmail.co.uk.

Thanks, look forward to hearing from you.

Hey all, been looking over the forum I just happened to stumble upon, and I am looking for a certain afterdark product…but I dont know exactly which one i want/need. I am looking for the After Dark with the customizable Marbles screensaver, Rodger Dodger, and Rock Paper Scissors. I used to Play this/watch the screensavers at school back in the day, and just looking for it again. Is there a product with the screensavers and games (Rodger Dodger game and a few others) together or is one product After Dark Games and another poroduct for the screensavers??? Any help would be great, I am just looking for the names of the product that has all this in it, or maybe links/downloads to get it. Thanks A Ton!

Since berzerk went down a lot of fans of their acrophobia acronym game were let down and had no where to play that game. So I’m posting to let y’all know that there’s a great new web acrophobia game called Acrowars at http://www.acrowars.com
Play the addicting acrophobia online!

Mike November 13, 2006, 7:31 pm

Hey guys, I’m wondering whether or not I’ve gone insane…

I’ve been looking over all these old Bezerk games like Acrophobia, Get the Picture, and YDKJ (online), but I seem to remember that my favourite of the bunch was called The Ziggurat or something like that, where everyone would pick an answer to a multiple choice question, and whoever picked the most popular answer would climb a dicerolled number of steps up the ziggurat.

Unfortunately, I can’t find ANYTHING about this game online, though Acro and GTP links abound. It was the best game of them all!

Am I nuts? Does anyone have any more info about it, or know if a new alternative is available?

Thanks a bunch!!
Mike

ThyPentacle -

I just picked up hosting for $22 for the -year- and I’m getting 2tb transfer/month. Oh, and they up your quota weekly by 16GB. Disk space too – starts at 200gb and up by 1g/week. It’s yummy.

It’s from Dreamhost – and use the promo code ‘YELLOWGORILLA’ ( found at http://dreamhost-promo-code.yellowgorilla.net/ )

Alternatively, I’m not using even 1/1000th of my bandwidth. Maybe I can mirror your stuff and tie into a coral cache.

Drop me a line and we can maybe figure something out. I really wanted to get the library of files from Red to offer up, but I sadly don’t have anything to offer him in return except the knowledge that he’d be sharing these classics with people who can’t find them anywhere else.

I would KILL to have STARRY SKYLINE with RAIN and LIGHTNING on my XP laptop! :D

I only have an old version of After Dark on my old Powerbook 520C, but I occasionally boot the thing up just to remind myself how cool I thought that screensaver was. If there’s a way to have it in XP, please let me know. Maybe there’s a way it can be ported over? From what I see above, the only version aside from Mac that had it was 1.0 for DOS. I’m stunned it wasn’t in 4.0 or th 10th Anniversary.

Please let me know. :)

I have determined that the following 3rd Party screen savers will run in the After Dark engines:

The Flintstones Collection
The Rocky & Bullwinkle Screen Saver Show
Jurassic Park – The Screen Saver
Opus & Bill Screen Saver

I have seen people here talking about the Energizer Bunny screen saver, as well. There was an Energizer Bunny screen saver (I have it), but unfortunately, it does not run in After Dark.

I also have a few other multimedia screen savers from the 90′s that won’t run in After Dark, but they are just cool –Twilight Zone, Terminator 2, Beavis & Butt-Head, South Park, etc.

If you would like to see the box art (front & back) for any of these screen saver programs, drop me an e-mail (RedSpy13@aol.com) and I’ll send the scans to you.

Hi Everyone !!!

I went to http://www.tigerheli.joymonkey.com/ and read the instructions and downloaded After Dark Screen Saver for my Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 computer.

I got most of the AD Modules to work. It’s really fun playing with those Screen Savers.

After Dark Star Trek TOS comes up, but only the sounder
module appears. All the others modules are in the file but, no modules appear on the 3.0 Engine. I tried the update module button, but it doesn’t seem to update or read those modules. Does anyone have any ideas ???

All the other modules work great !!! My favorites are Disney, Star Trek TNG, Looney Tunes and Totally Twisted !!!

Thank You for this Wonderful Forum !!!

Thanks to marshall.brooks@lmco.com for his GREAT Web Page !!! Wonderful downloads !!!

It has a text file on the cd with a serial number of ADC-32659-7016. I hope this helps anyone who has been looking for it. It just sucks that i cant use it on XP/win 2000. Even after messing with compatibility settings in XP, it still wont budge. It was originally made for windows 3.1…or “Windows for Workgroups”; so it says. Was a cool program from what i can remember. Too bad i cant use it :(

I have successfully installed the ST AD version 2.0b on my XP Pro system. All the modules work (starry night runs too fast becase it uses a loop instead of system timer). Right click on the AD.EXE file name in the folder where you installed it (I used C:\AFTERDRK – being a Win 3 program, it doesn’t like long path names and requires a folder name of 8 characters or less) and use these settings:
Compatibility: win 95
Leave the other boxes _unchecked_ or they will affect the rest of your system.
When it loads, go to Setup and put a check on SystemIQ Activity Monitor. Click the minimize button.

I DO get an error message at login that syas the system cannot load the 16-bit program. Just ignore it.

I have not tried any other settings iside ST AD. You can right-click the program name in the task bar to re-open the ccontrol panel.

Add the program to your Startup folder and it loads when you login. Set the timer and it will trip at the right time.
Press the ESC key to exit screensaver mode.

Enjoy!!

Does anyone have The Simpsons module for AfterDark?

I really miss them (my favorite was the Itchy and Scratchy one.)

Please put it on MegaUpload or something

Dale September 2, 2008, 6:58 pm

I have an old ThinkPad running Win3.1 and love the screensaver on it, which claims to be After Dark, but when I bought After Dark on a CD years ago, that one wasn’t included.

Does anyone know the name of this screensaver? It is a jungle scene, in which all the trees and animals are in black sillhouette, shown against a colored backdrop that changes to show different times of night. That is how I remember it, but I haven’t looked at it in some time.

The scene moves slowly across the screen from right to left, and as you watch, birds appear and flutter around, or there is a leopard up on a branch, or a boy walking across the scene, or monkeys jumping around in the trees.

The screensaver is so peaceful and relaxing that, I confess, I have been holding onto this otherwise useless, very old computer just so I can view the screensaver from time to time. How I would love for someone to recreate it or create something similar for WinXP! (Oh, ok, or for Vista, since I suppose that one day I’ll be forced to switch to that, but I don’t want to!)

nobody September 8, 2008, 7:35 pm

In answer to the above, the scene you are describing is from one of the disney After Dark packages featuring characters from the Jungle Book.

I can’t remember the package or the exact name of the module in question, but I’m reasonably sure it is found among those in the Disney package.

Hope this helps. As has been said above, there is a site where you can download the Disney package.

Hi! Just got AD 3.2 to run on Vista Home Basic (thanks to pent and TigerHeli!!!), but Starry Night and some other starry mods have big black vertical bars ruining the whole effect. Any clues as to what is going on?

Hello people

I am searching for No longer dark collection. It was free collection of 45 after dark modules and all links are dead.
Please send me e-mail or write to this thread.

Thanks for help.

PS:
have found some AfterDark 3 modules on Emule
http://www.edisk.sk/stahnout-soubor/18912/ADSimpsonScreams.zip_8.43MB.html

The Simpsons module is installable under XP with Windows 95 compatibility, one file
is corrupted, but the install continues and succeeds. You should not let owerwrite the system files.
The Scream module was little tricky. I used Windows 3.11 in dosbox and copied the folder Screams
to my Windows XP installation.
The modules are working very nice.

Damn! this thread has been going for a long time indeed. I remember when I first saw Sorcerer’s apprentice on a friends computer and I thought “Well, is this cool or what!”. I never got around to have this software and my first computer (the one I finally claim for my own use) had XP and I really already had forgotten everything about this little piece of software. Now I have Vista and I’m saddened to see it’s highly incompatible. Well, it’s true other software exists that better serves the pourpose, nevertheless I think it’s important to make it compatible with newer OSs so that at least from a graphical standpoint it endures forever (what I mean is to keep the video and eliminate interaction, dull as it may be). Unfortunately I lack the proggraming skills to do it myself. Hey, BTW, sorry for all gramatic and spelling errors within the post, I’m not a native speaker.

Now I have and I use OS10.5 and I have never found a calendar since then that I want to use…tonight i thought I’d see if I could find something and I found this forum and I remembered Star Trek and well I totally agree with everyone. What a great company and we still want them! wow , not many companies can say that.

DarkLord March 31, 2009, 7:08 pm

Hello people. I installed after dark 4.0 on Windows 7. The Starry night module is functional but the other modules from 4.0 collection aren’t. They write only message “Unable to load selected module: \Windows\module.ad.” at Starry night background.
Did someone managed to run them???

Tholek May 13, 2009, 8:21 am

I’m still here!

Can some one PLEASE provide a step by step on Vista 32-bit installation of 3.2 or any later version of AD that will run on Vista 32-bit and can run STARRY NIGHT/SKYLINE, RAIN/RAINSTORM (w/lightning) and possibly ZOT?

So far, I have found these sites:

http://afterdarksaver.blogspot.com/
http://www.tigerheli.joymonkey.com/

The second would indicate 3.2 can run all those modules on XP, and the first site says that XP version can run on Vista, as a screenshot above would indicate. I cannot sucessfully install that version, however.

The original installer failed at 95%. Then I had to kill the process. I tried again, and when it happened, I went and ran the update.exe anyhow. That seemed to complete, but the failure of the original exe meant no program shortcut folder in start menu except for the tray icon in startup.

Even with that, after the reboot, with the program running, it won’t display the screensaver! Nothing happens when idle or when clicking demo.

This is all after running the install as-is and then with anti-virus off, in XP compatibility mode and as administrator.

Help! I want Starry Night and Rain (together) on my Vista PC!!!

I’m also leaving a similar comment at:

http://afterdarksaver.blogspot.com/2007/05/om-appliances-by-p.html

If you can help, please post to both. Thanks!

TO: Tholek

Hi

I don’t know, if this helps, because I managed to run it in Windows 7 but
- UAC disabled
- I have used the preinstalled AD 3.2 XP collection from my previous posts
- I ran the setup with administrator privileges(full install into C:\AFTERDRK, write to the system files, no restart)
- I applied 3.2 update
- restart PC
- first or second time it throws an error, but then it will work

If you succeed, let us know.

DarkLord

Tholek June 25, 2009, 3:26 pm

Hi again.

Firstly, I forgot to say, but I did have UAC off during previous install attempts (disabled it a while ago), but things still did not work.

However, I just used the preinstalled version from the rapidshare folder above rather than the tigerheli versions, and IT WORKED! That is, except for SOUND! :(

The newer modules are fine. They have sound. Yet, from past experience, I know that the more basic Starry Night (or was it Starry Skyline then?) had crickets chirping, and Rainstorm has rain noise with lightning. At least it did on my old Mac Powerbook.

Right now I have 3.2XP running in MultiModule with Starry Night, Rainstorm and Zot! and there’s NO SOUND AT ALL. Additionally, I only added Zot! because lightning in Rainstorm DOES NOT WORK. It only flashes a white bar across the screen. I assume this is a symptom of issues with the modules being designed for an older system, since the rain is pretty fast now on a contemporary CPU and Vista.

Zot! is a poor replacement as the original Rainstorm lightning was far better with well-defined yellow forks that didn’t pass through or in front of buildings. (I tweaked Zot! transparency and it’s just not the same)

From what I’ve read, I’m guessing no, but I still have to ask: Is there a way to slow performance of old modules?

In the install info there’s references to buffers and the like, and I wonder if there’s some way to introduce some kind of lag that would slow them down. I’d like Rainstorm’s lightning back.

Also, and I know this is the least of my problems, Starry Night has no star quantity control that I see. The buildings look the same, but there’s too many stars, and the falling ones are too frequent. (Also, some are big and pass in front of some of the buildings. It looks like Armageddon!) Again, this may be a difference between STARRY NIGHT and STARRY SKYLINE if there is a difference at all, but I liked the more sedate bright Manhattan skyline with rain and the odd lightning strike.

Overall, I’m still very pleased with it working to this extent, and I appreciate the help.

Thanks again!

wow, i sit here, and i rember berkley systems way back in the day….. we owned all the games. My dad worked for them the office was awesome …and yes the guy from you don’t know jack really shaved his head. They were bought out in 2000.

Paul November 23, 2009, 10:40 am

Do we have any ex Berkeley Systems people here? It was quite an experience – unlike any other place I’ve worked. Yes, there really was a circular slide to get from the second floor to the first. The idea was copied by Macromedia (the people who invented Flash before they became part of the Adobe family) when a lot of Berkeley Systems people ended up at Macromedia. There were a couple versions, but I was the original voice for Bad Dog.

Glenn Sugden March 1, 2010, 12:31 am

For what it’s worth, Star Wars Screen Entertainment used (a modified version of) the Intermission engine, and not After Dark.

DarkLord January 14, 2011, 7:48 am

Hi Serrajn,
you definitely need patched version, look for it in this thread, it worked on Windows 7 for me.

Geoff Inman September 12, 2011, 8:22 pm

for all of you wondering about where to play the Old Bezerk (berkely systems) Games like Acrophobia, Carbon copy games has a New Clone. Check it out at http://www.carboncopygames.com/acroblast_flash/acroblast.html Word has it that they are also in the works for other Berkely Systems clones.

I have the original disks for After Dark and More After Dark for Mac, System 7. Obviously, it’s long ago and far away since I could run it, but I still miss it. Is there a version anywhere that will run on Mac OSX (10.6.8)?

Ali December 3, 2011, 2:06 am

I’m slowly starting to regret my move to a 64 bit system . . . I sincerely doubt even patched AD will run on my Win7 . . . any advice at all? I miss my screensavers from back when I was a little runt, letting Zot! run all night long, because I loved that module so much

older, I got twisted, and I want to torture mimes again.
I may have to see if I can get an old junk laptop, throw 3.1 or 95 on it, just so I can run some AD

you can contact me at sylverlyghtning@yahoo.com if you have a solution for me

JimmyJ December 30, 2011, 11:52 pm

I’m running Star Trek (AD2.0b) with sound and everything working on Windows 2000 SP4 using a VirtualBOX VM on top of a 64bit version of Mac OS 10.6.8. As it turns out, AfterDark version 2.0b is pretty rugged across various OSes. But on a modern Mac, the 16 color EGA graphics are a bit tiny/fuzzy. If there was no sound it would be annoying.

I’ve just upgraded to AD3.01 running Simpsons and installed it over the Star Trek install: Star Trek still works with sound, Simpsons works but with no sound. Between the AD2.0 and AD3.0, new developers took over and changed how the program accesses system devices. The Simpsons device driver ADW30.386, which includes sound, is a VXD that won’t run under NT/2000, from what I can find there’s no workaround, for Win2K at least. The Simpsons 256 color VGA graphics are very nice and make up a little for no sound.

The VirtualBOX VM is a great way to run a 32bit OS under a 64bit OS. The 3 main VMs won’t properly run a DOS/Windows environment such as Win3.1/DOS since they’re optimized for flat addressing. Some versions of VMs run Win98, but not optimally.

Apparently some folks have Win3.1 running under an older version of DOSBOX, but not the latest version. Both VirtualBOX and DOSBOX are free VMs but you still need the license and media for the client OS.

JimmyJ December 31, 2011, 8:36 pm

Here is an article from 2005 about tweaking AD4.0 (WinXP) and a discussion in comments about running various versions of AD, including some links (some are active, most aren’t).
http://goo.gl/oVrqt

Here is a webpage from Bill Stewart’s website (the co-author of AD1.0 and AD2.0 for Windows and Star Trek module) with some history and download links for the original Magic, and Magic2000.
http://goo.gl/gUgJn

The Star Trek screensaver is a fabulous program, and still stands up graphically and aurally on a new Mac (on Win2K under VirtualBOX VM). Some of the graphics are fuzzy, but many are crisp and show up well on a new Mac high res screen. The Star Trek design is so breathtaking that sentimental tolerance overcomes any shortcomings.

Both the Star Trek and Simpsons include the “Starry Night” saver, but with the timings of modern CPUs, the meteors are very fast. The timings are an issue with a few of the animations from both versions, but overall there’s no problem. Still, getting “Starry Night” to run on Mac OS 10.6.8 using a Windows VM has a nice irony since the AD for Mac won’t run on Intel Macs, apparently.

Does anybody know why discordi.com is down? it is the remake of cosmic conensus and i want to play this game again!!!.

I think a ‘new’ AfterDark would be a great project for a ‘Kickstarter’.

I would also like to see a new afterdark because i think people would like more entertaining screensavers for their computers.

You no for over a decade as one of my fondest memories of the early computer days was playing flipside games especially virtual vegas. The format and hoyle style multiplayer actions was honestly regardless of old graffics to this blows any other gaming site. Take a break from vegas go over and play spades, hearts, chess and more.
Will they ever bring it back i would do and pay anything to bring it back. When the put that message “elvis has left thw building” it went downhill from there before you no it the whole flipside won.net uproar and virtual vegas was finished. I dont understand how such a great idea killer concept for free and believe me all hours of the night the lobby was packed and there was always a full table to join in. Everyone was social they had funny quotes like “oh gnarly” and “pant…pant…pant” it was just all around just an awesome pass time. I havent found anything that even comes close to that concept.
Please enlighten me what the hell happend?? There was no recession money was pumping pretty steadily. Why did they let it go? Why didnt they charge id pay 3 times more then what i pay for these crappy apps nowadays. They had it all every game imaginable single player games you can win prizes in and private chats private tables a lobby EVERYTHING!
Is there any shot of that comming back?
Is there anybody out there that might have some demos or somethin that mabye I can pay a graffic designer to create a bigger and better version.
Email me justin.she@hotmail.com cos i dont no if ill check back on this blog here. Just for the longest time wanna relive the most awesome memories of my early years.
Im suprised theres no Wikipedia article or anything.
Please enlighten me!
