You remember Berkeley Systems, don’t you? They made After Dark, the first wildly popular commercial screensaver. AD was created in a time before Windows 95 made screensavers truly integrated, and it was created with flair. Who could forget the Flying Toasters? Lawnmower Man? The Simpsons version of AD?
Apparently, everyone. AD fell by the wayside as Berkeley hit it big with a little Jellyvision program you might’ve heard of called You Don’t Know Jack. Jack turned out to be the future of the company, and as the 123 different versions of Jack can attest to, it’s been profitable. Oddly enough, Jack was similar to AD in that it was a bit of a prelude to what was coming down the pipe: online gaming.
Berkeley’s embraced that, too; the game network Bezerk was one of the first commercially successful net gaming sites. But they outsourced that to won.net last year. So what’s left at Berkeley? Not much. While you can still buy AD, why? It doesn’t work on Win 2000 or Mac OS 9, and as their FAQ points out, upgrading software is cost prohibitive. There are dozens of free screensavers out there. And you can still get Jack, but who doesn’t have it already?
The interesting part of the whole story is that Berkeley was bought out by Sierra – formerly Sierra On-Line – which also used to be a highly profitable company. Now, Sierra is but a shell of its former self because it didn’t keep up with the times. Berkeley, whether under the Sierra umbrella or not, succumbed to the same fate. -pm

Great to see you guys have the Ping back up so soon! I, for one, would like to take the opportunity to thank you for all your hard work, and for giving us a place to rant and rave about Berkeley Systems and After Dark. Hats off and many hearty back-slaps to you, gentlemen.

I have a copy of 3.1 Windows After Dark on floppy. I’ve loaded it on every computer I’ve owned since 1993. Lunatic Fringe runs on my XP under DOS, tho the high processor speed makes it a bit jumpy sometimes. It’s still fun anyway.

Hi, would anyone be willing to sell some After Dark / Berkeley system products. I would like: X-Men, Snoopy, Screen Studio, Expresso, StarDate, Launchpad and After Dark 3.1 or 3.2, would pay a reasonable amount for these, plus shipping to the UK. Price would be dependent on condition eg. with box, sealed / not, new, used etc. (FOR WINDOWS ONLY).
Since Windows have stopped doing patches for Windows ’98, they’re not recommending anyone still use ’98 because of not getting updates / virus updates etc. So, for anyone that feels like it’s a waste of time having these, because they can’t run them anymore, i have a good home for them.
So, why not sell them & make use of the money to get something you do want.
Only people who are serious about selling please, e-mail me at kward01@hotmail.co.uk.
Thanks, look forward to hearing from you.

Hey all, been looking over the forum I just happened to stumble upon, and I am looking for a certain afterdark product…but I dont know exactly which one i want/need. I am looking for the After Dark with the customizable Marbles screensaver, Rodger Dodger, and Rock Paper Scissors. I used to Play this/watch the screensavers at school back in the day, and just looking for it again. Is there a product with the screensavers and games (Rodger Dodger game and a few others) together or is one product After Dark Games and another poroduct for the screensavers??? Any help would be great, I am just looking for the names of the product that has all this in it, or maybe links/downloads to get it. Thanks A Ton!

Since berzerk went down a lot of fans of their acrophobia acronym game were let down and had no where to play that game. So I’m posting to let y’all know that there’s a great new web acrophobia game called Acrowars at http://www.acrowars.com
Play the addicting acrophobia online!
Mike November 13, 2006, 7:31 pm
Hey guys, I’m wondering whether or not I’ve gone insane…
I’ve been looking over all these old Bezerk games like Acrophobia, Get the Picture, and YDKJ (online), but I seem to remember that my favourite of the bunch was called The Ziggurat or something like that, where everyone would pick an answer to a multiple choice question, and whoever picked the most popular answer would climb a dicerolled number of steps up the ziggurat.
Unfortunately, I can’t find ANYTHING about this game online, though Acro and GTP links abound. It was the best game of them all!
Am I nuts? Does anyone have any more info about it, or know if a new alternative is available?
Thanks a bunch!!

ThyPentacle –
I just picked up hosting for $22 for the -year- and I’m getting 2tb transfer/month. Oh, and they up your quota weekly by 16GB. Disk space too – starts at 200gb and up by 1g/week. It’s yummy.
It’s from Dreamhost – and use the promo code ‘YELLOWGORILLA’ ( found at http://dreamhost-promo-code.yellowgorilla.net/ )
Alternatively, I’m not using even 1/1000th of my bandwidth. Maybe I can mirror your stuff and tie into a coral cache.
Drop me a line and we can maybe figure something out. I really wanted to get the library of files from Red to offer up, but I sadly don’t have anything to offer him in return except the knowledge that he’d be sharing these classics with people who can’t find them anywhere else.

I would KILL to have STARRY SKYLINE with RAIN and LIGHTNING on my XP laptop! π
I only have an old version of After Dark on my old Powerbook 520C, but I occasionally boot the thing up just to remind myself how cool I thought that screensaver was. If there’s a way to have it in XP, please let me know. Maybe there’s a way it can be ported over? From what I see above, the only version aside from Mac that had it was 1.0 for DOS. I have determined that the following 3rd Party screen savers will run in the After Dark engines:
The Flintstones Collection
The Rocky & Bullwinkle Screen Saver Show
Jurassic Park – The Screen Saver
Opus & Bill Screen Saver
I have seen people here talking about the Energizer Bunny screen saver, as well. There was an Energizer Bunny screen saver (I have it), but unfortunately, it does not run in After Dark.
I also have a few other multimedia screen savers from the 90’s that won’t run in After Dark, but they are just cool –Twilight Zone, Terminator 2, Beavis & Butt-Head, South Park, etc.
If you would like to see the box art (front & back) for any of these screen saver programs, drop me an e-mail (RedSpy13@aol.com) and I’ll send the scans to you.

Hi Everyone !!!
I went to http://www.tigerheli.joymonkey.com/ and read the instructions and downloaded After Dark Screen Saver for my Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 computer.
I got most of the AD Modules to work. It’s really fun playing with those Screen Savers.
After Dark Star Trek TOS comes up, but only the sounder
module appears. All the others modules are in the file but, no modules appear on the 3.0 Engine. I tried the update module button, but it doesn’t seem to update or read those modules. Does anyone have any ideas ???
All the other modules work great !!! My favorites are Disney, Star Trek TNG, Looney Tunes and Totally Twisted !!!
Thank You for this Wonderful Forum !!!
Thanks to marshall.brooks@lmco.com for his GREAT Web Page !!! Wonderful downloads !!!

It has a text file on the cd with a serial number of ADC-32659-7016. I hope this helps anyone who has been looking for it. It just sucks that i cant use it on XP/win 2000. Even after messing with compatibility settings in XP, it still wont budge. It was originally made for windows 3.1…or “Windows for Workgroups”; so it says. Was a cool program from what i can remember. I have successfully installed the ST AD version 2.0b on my XP Pro system. All the modules work (starry night runs too fast becase it uses a loop instead of system timer). Right click on the AD.EXE file name in the folder where you installed it (I used C:\AFTERDRK – being a Win 3 program, it doesn’t like long path names and requires a folder name of 8 characters or less) and use these settings:
Compatibility: win 95
Leave the other boxes _unchecked_ or they will affect the rest of your system.
When it loads, go to Setup and put a check on SystemIQ Activity Monitor. Click the minimize button.
I DO get an error message at login that syas the system cannot load the 16-bit program. Just ignore it.
I have not tried any other settings iside ST AD. You can right-click the program name in the task bar to re-open the ccontrol panel.
Add the program to your Startup folder and it loads when you login. Set the timer and it will trip at the right time.
Press the ESC key to exit screensaver mode.
Enjoy!!

Does anyone have The Simpsons module for AfterDark?
I really miss them (my favorite was the Itchy and Scratchy one.)
Please put it on MegaUpload or something
Dale September 2, 2008, 6:58 pm
I have an old ThinkPad running Win3.1 and love the screensaver on it, which claims to be After Dark, but when I bought After Dark on a CD years ago, that one wasn’t included.
Does anyone know the name of this screensaver? It is a jungle scene, in which all the trees and animals are in black sillhouette, shown against a colored backdrop that changes to show different times of night. That is how I remember it, but I haven’t looked at it in some time.
The scene moves slowly across the screen from right to left, and as you watch, birds appear and flutter around, or there is a leopard up on a branch, or a boy walking across the scene, or monkeys jumping around in the trees.
The screensaver is so peaceful and relaxing that, I confess, I have been holding onto this otherwise useless, very old computer just so I can view the screensaver from time to time. How I would love for someone to recreate it or create something similar for WinXP! (Oh, ok, or for Vista, since I suppose that one day I’ll be forced to switch to that, but I don’t want to!)
nobody September 8, 2008, 7:35 pm
In answer to the above, the scene you are describing is from one of the disney After Dark packages featuring characters from the Jungle Book.
I can’t remember the package or the exact name of the module in question, but I’m reasonably sure it is found among those in the Disney package.
Hope this helps. As has been said above, there is a site where you can download the Disney package.

Hi! Just got AD 3.2 to run on Vista Home Basic (thanks to pent and TigerHeli!!!), but Starry Night and some other starry mods have big black vertical bars ruining the whole effect. Any clues as to what is going on?

Hello people
I am searching for No longer dark collection. It was free collection of 45 after dark modules and all links are dead.
Please send me e-mail or write to this thread.
Thanks for help.
PS:
have found some AfterDark 3 modules on Emule
http://www.edisk.sk/stahnout-soubor/18912/ADSimpsonScreams.zip_8.43MB.html
The Simpsons module is installable under XP with Windows 95 compatibility, one file
is corrupted, but the install continues and succeeds. You should not let owerwrite the system files.
The Scream module was little tricky. I used Windows 3.11 in dosbox and copied the folder Screams
to my Windows XP installation.
The modules are working very nice.

Damn! this thread has been going for a long time indeed. I remember when I first saw Sorcerer’s apprentice on a friends computer and I thought “Well, is this cool or what!”. I never got around to have this software and my first computer (the one I finally claim for my own use) had XP and I really already had forgotten everything about this little piece of software. Now I have Vista and I’m saddened to see it’s highly incompatible. Well, it’s true other software exists that better serves the pourpose, nevertheless I think it’s important to make it compatible with newer OSs so that at least from a graphical standpoint it endures forever (what I mean is to keep the video and eliminate interaction, dull as it may be). Unfortunately I lack the proggraming skills to do it myself. Hey, BTW, sorry for all gramatic and spelling errors within the post, I’m not a native speaker.

Hello people. I installed after dark 4.0 on Windows 7. The Starry night module is functional but the other modules from 4.0 collection aren’t. They write only message “Unable to load selected module: \Windows\module.ad.” at Starry night background.
Did someone managed to run them???

I’m still here!
Can some one PLEASE provide a step by step on Vista 32-bit installation of 3.2 or any later version of AD that will run on Vista 32-bit and can run STARRY NIGHT/SKYLINE, RAIN/RAINSTORM (w/lightning) and possibly ZOT?
So far, I have found these sites:
http://afterdarksaver.blogspot.com/
http://www.tigerheli.joymonkey.com/
The second would indicate 3.2 can run all those modules on XP, and the first site says that XP version can run on Vista, as a screenshot above would indicate. I cannot sucessfully install that version, however.
The original installer failed at 95%. Then I had to kill the process. I tried again, and when it happened, I went and ran the update.exe anyhow. That seemed to complete, but the failure of the original exe meant no program shortcut folder in start menu except for the tray icon in startup.
Even with that, after the reboot, with the program running, it won’t display the screensaver! Nothing happens when idle or when clicking demo.
This is all after running the install as-is and then with anti-virus off, in XP compatibility mode and as administrator.
Help! I want Starry Night and Rain (together) on my Vista PC!!!
I’m also leaving a similar comment at:
http://afterdarksaver.blogspot.com/2007/05/om-appliances-by-p.html
If you can help, please post to both. Thanks!

TO: Tholek
Hi
I don’t know, if this helps, because I managed to run it in Windows 7 but
– UAC disabled
– I have used the preinstalled AD 3.2 XP collection from my previous posts
– I ran the setup with administrator privileges(full install into C:\AFTERDRK, write to the system files, no restart)
– I applied 3.2 update
– restart PC
– first or second time it throws an error, but then it will work
If you succeed, let us know.

Tholek June 25, 2009, 3:26 pm
Hi again.
Firstly, I forgot to say, but I did have UAC off during previous install attempts (disabled it a while ago), but things still did not work.
However, I just used the preinstalled version from the rapidshare folder above rather than the tigerheli versions, and IT WORKED! That is, except for SOUND! π
The newer modules are fine. They have sound. Yet, from past experience, I know that the more basic Starry Night (or was it Starry Skyline then?) had crickets chirping, and Rainstorm has rain noise with lightning. At least it did on my old Mac Powerbook.
Right now I have 3.2XP running in MultiModule with Starry Night, Rainstorm and Zot! and there’s NO SOUND AT ALL. Additionally, I only added Zot! because lightning in Rainstorm DOES NOT WORK. It only flashes a white bar across the screen. I assume this is a symptom of issues with the modules being designed for an older system, since the rain is pretty fast now on a contemporary CPU and Vista.
Zot! is a poor replacement as the original Rainstorm lightning was far better with well-defined yellow forks that didn’t pass through or in front of buildings. (I tweaked Zot! transparency and it’s just not the same)
From what I’ve read, I’m guessing no, but I still have to ask: Is there a way to slow performance of old modules?
In the install info there’s references to buffers and the like, and I wonder if there’s some way to introduce some kind of lag that would slow them down. I’d like Rainstorm’s lightning back.
Also, and I know this is the least of my problems, Starry Night has no star quantity control that I see. The buildings look the same, but there’s too many stars, and the falling ones are too frequent. (Also, some are big and pass in front of some of the buildings. It looks like Armageddon!) Again, this may be a difference between STARRY NIGHT and STARRY SKYLINE if there is a difference at all, but I liked the more sedate bright Manhattan skyline with rain and the odd lightning strike.
Overall, I’m still very pleased with it working to this extent, and I appreciate the help.
Thanks again!

wow, i sit here, and i rember berkley systems way back in the day….. we owned all the games. My dad worked for them the office was awesome …and yes the guy from you don’t know jack really shaved his head. They were bought out in 2000.
Paul November 23, 2009, 10:40 am
Do we have any ex Berkeley Systems people here? It was quite an experience – unlike any other place I’ve worked. Yes, there really was a circular slide to get from the second floor to the first. The idea was copied by Macromedia (the people who invented Flash before they became part of the Adobe family) when a lot of Berkeley Systems people ended up at Macromedia. There were a couple versions, but I was the original voice for Bad Dog.

For what it’s worth, Star Wars Screen Entertainment used (a modified version of) the Intermission engine, and not After Dark.

for all of you wondering about where to play the Old Bezerk (berkely systems) Games like Acrophobia, Carbon copy games has a New Clone. Check it out at http://www.carboncopygames.com/acroblast_flash/acroblast.html Word has it that they are also in the works for other Berkely Systems clones.

I have the original disks for After Dark and More After Dark for Mac, System 7. Obviously, it’s long ago and far away since I could run it, but I still miss it. Is there a version anywhere that will run on Mac OSX (10.6.8)?
Ali December 3, 2011, 2:06 am
I’m slowly starting to regret my move to a 64 bit system . . . I sincerely doubt even patched AD will run on my Win7 . . . any advice at all? I miss my screensavers from back when I was a little runt, letting Zot! run all night long, because I loved that module so much
older, I got twisted, and I want to torture mimes again.
I may have to see if I can get an old junk laptop, throw 3.1 or 95 on it, just so I can run some AD
you can contact me at sylverlyghtning@yahoo.com if you have a solution for me
JimmyJ December 30, 2011, 11:52 pm
I’m running Star Trek (AD2.0b) with sound and everything working on Windows 2000 SP4 using a VirtualBOX VM on top of a 64bit version of Mac OS 10.6.8. As it turns out, AfterDark version 2.0b is pretty rugged across various OSes. But on a modern Mac, the 16 color EGA graphics are a bit tiny/fuzzy. If there was no sound it would be annoying.
I’ve just upgraded to AD3.01 running Simpsons and installed it over the Star Trek install: Star Trek still works with sound, Simpsons works but with no sound. Between the AD2.0 and AD3.0, new developers took over and changed how the program accesses system devices. The Simpsons device driver ADW30.386, which includes sound, is a VXD that won’t run under NT/2000, from what I can find there’s no workaround, for Win2K at least. The Simpsons 256 color VGA graphics are very nice and make up a little for no sound.
The VirtualBOX VM is a great way to run a 32bit OS under a 64bit OS. The 3 main VMs won’t properly run a DOS/Windows environment such as Win3.1/DOS since they’re optimized for flat addressing. Some versions of VMs run Win98, but not optimally.
Apparently some folks have Win3.1 running under an older version of DOSBOX, but not the latest version. Both VirtualBOX and DOSBOX are free VMs but you still need the license and media for the client OS.
JimmyJ December 31, 2011, 8:36 pm
Here is an article from 2005 about tweaking AD4.0 (WinXP) and a discussion in comments about running various versions of AD, including some links (some are active, most aren’t).
http://goo.gl/oVrqt
Here is a webpage from Bill Stewart’s website (the co-author of AD1.0 and AD2.0 for Windows and Star Trek module) with some history and download links for the original Magic, and Magic2000.
http://goo.gl/gUgJn
The Star Trek screensaver is a fabulous program, and still stands up graphically and aurally on a new Mac (on Win2K under VirtualBOX VM). Some of the graphics are fuzzy, but many are crisp and show up well on a new Mac high res screen. The Star Trek design is so breathtaking that sentimental tolerance overcomes any shortcomings.
Both the Star Trek and Simpsons include the “Starry Night” saver, but with the timings of modern CPUs, the meteors are very fast. The timings are an issue with a few of the animations from both versions, but overall there’s no problem. Still, getting “Starry Night” to run on Mac OS 10.6.8 using a Windows VM has a nice irony since the AD for Mac won’t run on Intel Macs, apparently.

You no for over a decade as one of my fondest memories of the early computer days was playing flipside games especially virtual vegas. The format and hoyle style multiplayer actions was honestly regardless of old graffics to this blows any other gaming site. Take a break from vegas go over and play spades, hearts, chess and more.
Will they ever bring it back i would do and pay anything to bring it back. When the put that message “elvis has left thw building” it went downhill from there before you no it the whole flipside won.net uproar and virtual vegas was finished. I dont understand how such a great idea killer concept for free and believe me all hours of the night the lobby was packed and there was always a full table to join in. Everyone was social they had funny quotes like “oh gnarly” and “pant…pant…pant” it was just all around just an awesome pass time. I havent found anything that even comes close to that concept.
Please enlighten me what the hell happend?? There was no recession money was pumping pretty steadily. Why did they let it go? Why didnt they charge id pay 3 times more then what i pay for these crappy apps nowadays. They had it all every game imaginable single player games you can win prizes in and private chats private tables a lobby EVERYTHING!
Is there any shot of that comming back?
Is there anybody out there that might have some demos or somethin that mabye I can pay a graffic designer to create a bigger and better version.
Email me justin.she@hotmail.com cos i dont no if ill check back on this blog here. Just for the longest time wanna relive the most awesome memories of my early years.
Im suprised theres no Wikipedia article or anything.
Please enlighten me!
