Halloween Costumes

As All Hallow’s Eve approaches, I think back to my many memories ofchildhood Halloweens… the time a drunk driver almost ran a group of usover and we had to jump into the woods to avoid the car… the house thatwould always serve up eyeballs and random scary stuff courtesy of a man ina mask… the time I had this really cool Batman outfit… funny thing is,I really never liked Halloween as a kid.

What was your single best costume or Halloween moment of your childhood? -ram

When I was about 4 my older brother went as the Hunchback of Notre Dame, except he was wearing his football uniform. I didn't get the joke until years later.

One year I went as Sylvia Plath... wore a fifties dress, painted my face light blue and made an oven out of a big shoe box and put that on my head. I even carried around a copy of The Bell Jar. Nobody but the scary goth kids got the joke. Everyone thought I was Betty Crocker. Doesn't anyone want to commit suicide anymore??

Matt -- For some scary reason, I believe you. ;)

Robert -- That's pretty clever... I think all of my costumes were pretty straightforward.

Tina -- Wow... creative.

Speaking of "shocking" Halloween costumes, I'd like to let everyone know that the coathanger-around-the-neck/aborted fetus thing has been done to death. Literally.

I LOVE Halloween and have had some pretty good costumes thru the years. I think my favorite was in college when I was Speed Racer (see the Gallery at for a pic).

Ryan - ha! Yes, I forgot that I also had that Halloween picture out there. I was attempting to be Prince (Artist Formerly Known As at the time) and Binns was a disco 70's guy with his pants stuffed. We were a much better team as Speed Racer and the funky cow.

Ahh, the Halloween costumes. The Speed Racer one by Old Fezz is by far my favorite. At that time MTV was showing Speed Racer at midnight.

A funny side-story to the Speed Racer costume was that me and Mark went to a Halloween party at Bowling Green (OH) University but arrived after the party was over. We didn't bother getting into costume, although we brought them. After we left the nearly dead party, we decided to *get into* costume for the ride home. So we did.

The drive back to Cleveland involves going through a toll booth to get on the highway. Mark is driving his late 80s Escort costumed as Speed Racer. We approach the toll booth (probably 2am or so) to find the booth operator asleep. Just as we stop at the booth, he awakens and sleepily takes Mark's money and extends the receipt. Mark grabs it from his hand and exclaims a classic Speed Racer "Ah, OH!" then tears off.

Oh man, the look on that operator's face!
