404s on 4/04

Back in the day, error pages on the net were rather dull and uninteresting. But times have changed, and since today is 4/04, I’d like to share some of my favorite 404s with you.

First, naturally, I think mine is pretty swell and Ryan’s is scary. Angelfire uses varying attempts at humor. Zeldman uses phone metaphors. ESPN’s is bland. I don’t think Yahoo! has changed its error page ever, save for the new header graphic. AltaVista’s error page is plain, but includes an odd plug for Visa. (A search engine prefers Visa?)

Please, share your favorite 404s with the class. -pm

A warning to my fellow Pingers: Don't look at Ryan's error page with a full bladder. We don't need any more accidents.

Okay, I'm ignorant and want to know--what does "quijibo" mean or stand for? Is it a java or html language thing?

It's a shamefully misspelled version of kwyjibo, from here.

... and that's why ESPN uses it?

Monica -- Paul was just using what he knew to be invalid URLs, URLs that would return a 404 error.

Though I was secretly waiting for one of them to actually work.

ah. I thought that they were the names of the error pages, not just made up names to GET an error page. I see! Thanks!

Is there such thing as a 420 error?

FROM: Ryan

Only when you're connection speed is too high.

FROM: Ryan

Oh my Lord.

Smack me until I have welts. I can't believe I made that mistake (especially when I bust on people constantly for you're/your loose/lose mistakes). *head hung low*

I got this today (Robert, you'll love it):

http://www.sgi.com/Support/Licensing/install_docs.html

and if you let it sit for a while, it forwards you to the right page, and then if you go back, it'll give you a new picture!
