Homemade Baked Goods

Tell me, Pingers, is there any simple delight better than a warm, fresh cinnamon roll?

I ask because I recently attempted to make some cinnamon rolls – and I’m very proud with the results. They were delicious, with a fair amount of filling, wonderful frosting, and perfect consistency. I was – and am – happy with my in-kitchen accomplishment.

But it got me to thinking that just about any homemade baked good tastes so good. Cookies, breads, rolls… all of it just seems to taste better.

Am I alone in this?

You need to clarify your definition of "homemade" - out of a box or from scratch?

From scratch are the best, and the only "true" homemade.

Yes, truly, homemade can only mean from scrach. And home made cookies are the best. I have an old family recipe, which oddly enough, looks almost the same as the one on the back of tollhouse chocolate chips, that make a good 48 cookies and is magnificent. I love them. And then, when you add pistachios...

Home baked goods are the best, of those, cinnamon rolls probably top the list. I've got a good recipe in which I use buttermilk biscuit dough, flatten it out, spread the butter and cinnamon sugar, roll up, cut and bake.

By the way, not only does homemade mean "from scratch," but it also means no margarine (which is bad for you anyway)--butter only!!! And no calorie-saving sweeteners, no short cuts, no skim, 1%, or 2% milk unless necessary for the recipe, no egg beaters--only rich free range eggs. All fat all good homemade--the only way to go. You may, however, substitute butter for lard, which I do.

Have you ever made homemade bread, not using a bread machine? The results can be astonishingly good and you don't even have to get fancy or go off into the realm of artisan bread.

I also have a recipe for butter cookies from a 1960 women's magazine, but it's awfully elaborate. Lots of rolling and chilling of the dough, but the best cookies in America. My mom made them every year for decades until she hurt her back. I should really take on the tradition, but that would require me to have time and commitment.
