Eat Your Dandelions

It’s the season for Dandelions running rampant in our yards. But rather than complain about them, why not eat them?

Fried Dandelion Blossoms

Dandelion wine

Dandelion coffee (amongst others)

Dandelion Scrambled Eggs

More and more and more and yet more.

Have you tried any of these recipes? I was at my friends' house today, and while we were outside, their 5 year old said she was hungry and I was tempted to tell her how you can drink the liquid from the stems! (Good thing I didn't! I later found out that they had applied killer yesterday.)

Maybe this is why no one lets me babysit?

Yeah, that would probably put a damper on the kid's day, huh?

I haven't tried any dandelion recipes, but this would be a good year considering how many seem to be cropping up...

This reminds me of when I ate a ton of crab-apples and puked my guts out.

The lady loves dandelion salads, but they're too bitter for my taste. And all I want to do when eating them is chant, "Mama had a baby and her head popped off."

Ooooh... Mike... it's been YEARS since I did that. I'll have to go out and find a dandelion now, so I can pop its little head off.

I LOVE wilted dandelion salad with bacon and egg dressing. Mmm.. Pennsylvania Dutch Grandma rocks.

Three years later....I was at a cooking class where the chefs made ravioli stuffed with escarole, Swiss chard, and dandelion in addition to some sort of cheese. I did not pay attention to the cheese because the chances of my ever making ravioli from scratch are close to the chance that I will become President.

They were fabulous!!

My great grandmother collected dandelion greens in Cleveland's Hyde Park in the early part of the last century and sold them for salads at the West Side Market. She made enough money doing that to buy a house back when almost no one could afford a house. A self-made, self-employed woman way back when just by collecting dandelions. And I rack my over-educated brain and despair over my over-education-loan-debted life and wonder where the entrepreneurial impulse in my family went. Granny did it all with a third-grade education and no credit line.

Dandelion salad tycoon great grandma. Who'd have thought? And she just picked the ones that grew wild on Rockefeller's donated property, so no overhead and no fields to mind. No property of her own, no start-up costs. Genius. She makes those kids on "The Apprentice" look like fools.

Way to go, granny.

What is this then?
