Google Number

Apparently, the Google Number is starting to make a splash in certain circles. (Circles with nothing better to do than make up things like “Google Numbers.” But I’ll play along.)

It works like this. Search for your name with Google, encasing it in quotes. The number of results returned (even if they’re not you) is your Google Number. There’s a scale on the page above to determine just how, uh, number-y you are.

Me? I rank between “You are getting some real attention” and “You are well known in your field.” That seems about right.

It's a worthless measurement, especially for common names. HR departments need to spend more time actually talking to applicants and less time trying to make up meaningless statistics.

My "Google Number" for my name is pretty low, but when I add my middle initial into the mix, it multiplies six-fold.

By the way, I bet both Matt and Chris have very high Google numbers.

Very surprising. My number is only 396.

If I go by Robert, it's 49,900. But if I go by Rob, it's 191. And the first hit is my own page. :) If I throw my middle initial in with Robert, it's a mere 128. Oddly enough, a lot of those seem to really be me.

I agree with Ryan -- It's a pretty pointless stat. That said, "Dave Walls" turns up 925 times, "David Walls" turns up 2,700.

It's funny, because a lot of the hits that come up are old Pings that I've commented on, and it picks up my name..

I scored a 21. My Google Number and I are hitting the bar later.

Mine is "6".

Apparently, I'm not even a real person. My name failed to come up with even ONE lousy hit...
