We do it because we're impatient have have dwindling attention spans. Sitting still is easier to do when you're moving, even a little bit.

I used to do a lot of "Traffic Creeping"

I became addicted to it and would lose sleep thinking about the various ways that a person can traffic creep.

That was when I was younger and more active in the community.

For me, I'd rather creep up a little bit than have someone try and cut in line in front of me. Especially in areas where you narrow down, such as construction areas. I mean, if you know for 2 miles that you are going to narrow down to one lane, don't run up in the soon-to-be-closed lane (or worse yet, on the shoulder), and then cuss at me when i don't let you in. You know better.
